After having lost Hulu Selangor by a narrow margin, the parliamentary by-election for the Sibu seat looms as a test of Pakatan Rakyat’s ability to mount a coordinated campaign, something that was said to have eluded them in the earlier poll.
The auguries for a campaign of greater focus and coordination were good in that top Pakatan leaders – Anwar Ibrahim of PKR, Lim Kit Siang of DAP and Nasharuddin Mat Isa of PAS – got together in Sibu two Sundays ago to hammer out an agreement about intra-coalition cooperation for the Sibu poll.
They obtained the support of Snap leader Edwin Dundang, who though unable to be present because of party matters in Kuching, sent a representative and then was reached on the phone by Anwar to confirm the pact.
Both Anwar and Lim appeared excited by the agreement on greater coordination and, by extension, coalition readiness for compromise and flexibility on seat-sharing arrangements among Pakatan parties for the fast-approaching state election.
The latter arrangement is by no means an easy matter for Pakatan parties.
The Sibu seat at the last parliamentary poll in March 2008 saw a three-cornered fight between Supp, DAP and PKR.
That PKR fielded a candidate whereas Sibu was clearly a DAP seat was more attributable to the obstinacy of individual leaders than to any divergence in their parties’ platforms.
The racial composition of the Sibu seat, with a Chinese majority in the state ward of Pelawan, an Iban majority in that of Bawang Assan, and a Malay/Melanau majority in Nangka, makes the division of campaign responsibility among the Pakatan partners straightforward.
Common cause
PKR can concentrate their campaign on the Iban in Bawang Assan, Pas can focus on Nangka while DAP can scour the two while bringing their big guns to bear on Pelawan where they have been the preferred choice of the Chinese voters there.
It was said that the late Robert Lau Hoi Kew of Supp, five- term MP for Sibu, would deploy all the power of his party’s use of the ’3M’ formula – money, machinery and media manipulation – on the Bawang Assan and Nangka wards to offset the deficit in Chinese votes he was wont to incur in Pelawan to win the parliamentary seat.
For this by-election, however, that formula may no longer be winning because of greater awareness by the people, via the internet principally, that the ‘old politics’ of the 3M type is passé.
The 2,100 people who gathered in a three-storey restaurant on April 18 for a PKR-organised dinner were composed of all races in Sibu and, gauged by the vehicles they came in, all strata of society.
They heard Anwar give a round-up of the national political scenario that was both thoughtful and engaging.
He urged them to make common cause with the forces for political change on the Peninsula.
It must have been a rare occasion to his audience to hear a leader speak as if the several hundred miles of sea that separate Borneo from Peninsula Malaysia were an artificial chasm between two throbbing entities.

Siburians, Sarawakians and Sabahans, if you want election goodies, lots of it and in all forms, you MUST vote Pakatan. Those in BN are desperate, very desperate and they will give practically everything you want. It is now or never.
Chinese schools, everything, just ask and it will be given, if you vote BN you will forever not get anything. Wise up folks, if you want development, vote Pakatan.
See, today the RASA folks who voted 82% Pakatan during their HS election today got their 3 million for their Chinese school. How many Chinese schools are there in Sibu? It is now or never folks, take the money, which belongs to the Rakyat and held in trust by the Government and vote Pakatan Rakyat. Until and unless you practice this, you will forever be left behind. What with you being the kingmaker in Malaysian politics.
All the best East Malaysian brothers and sisters.

The reckless grabbing of NCR lands and blatant disregard for our ancestral land rights have reached Boiling point. We Dayaks are very “Tu Lan” and very angry. My friends and I and a few who are not even Dayak are willing to forgo our “gawai dayak bonus” promised to us by our employer , the KTS group, by making sure Wong Ho Leng wins in the Sibu by-election and seek justice for us in Parliament. All landowners, be they Chinese, Malays, Indians or Kadazan/Dusuns will be able to understand and feel for us if their lands have been taken away from them and given to the rich and politically well connected cronies of Taib and BN. All Malaysians in Sibu must not allowed themselves to be bought by KTS group and SUPP/BN. We must vote Wong Ho Leng of DAP to fight for our NCR land rights and any other land.

But u all Siburians make sure that we all will receive the arrival of DAP/PR candidate in Sdra Wong Hong Leng with a big applause in the evening of 16.05.2010. Receiving him as a new wakil rakyat for parlimen Sibu a clear message to the umNO/Bn baru that we’ll from there on move forward withdraw all umNO/Bn fixed deposit in Sarawak. Once come the PRN10 all the fixed deposit withdrawn n umNO/Bn will go bancrupt in Sarawak then PR will proceed to take over the Putra jaya. PR will still love Putrajaya n this is a truely love n will go all out to be there soon come the next PRU13.
Let’s follow our Chinese brothers n sisters in HS. Ask as much as we need from either najib the najis or taib the bomoh or even the mahyuddin the maknyah. Get as much as possible but then give our vote to DAP/PR. We all know our Chines brothers n sisters in Sibu are knowing what they can do n semua itu adalah hak anda sebagai rakyat yang merdeka. Kita doublekan the amount what umNO/Bn has given to HS. Ask for more, just say what u all want. For the Malays in Nangka ask whatever u want to ask n u will get it, this is ur fortune but remebre give ur vote for DAP/PR. U all will see a new landscape of the Malay Kampungs in Nangka will evolve. N u all Iban, where’s ur warrior spirit. Now is the time show it. Ask for money as much as u all want then give ur vote for DAP/PR. The last few paragraphs gives an idea how how difficult it is to get the Iban vote.
Quote:
Kee Won says they are caught in a vice-like grip of poverty, state government dependence and worse of all, hopelessness.
An Iban DAP grassroots activist puts it this way:
“It is difficult to get the Iban to believe in a future that does not include the BN. The lands they used to own have been taken from them. They do not even own the front and back yards of their longhouses.”
The “tuai rumah” (headman) of a longhouse is paid a monthly salary of RM450 by the state government. They are routinely told that their salaries will be taken away if they do not ensure that every vote in their longhouse goes to the BN, says Kee Won.
“I keep telling them, you all have to wake up. You can’t just be bought with goodies. I don’t know what else to say to convince them” exclaims the Iban activist, talking about his experiences trying to spread the DAP’s message in the longhouses.
Kee Won had invited the activist over to help illustrate to The Malaysian Insider the coming uphill campaign for the Iban vote. Throughout the interview his Iban friend was clearly dejected about the prospects of getting the community to change.
“You have to work 10 times harder (being in the opposition) in Sarawak. There is a lot of pain. You look at my friend. It’s like he’s given up hope on his own community,” Kee Won says after the activist left.
“But I can’t give up hope on him and I have to give him hope. You have to hope that people can change.”
That spirit is what Pakatan believes gave them the victories in 2008 and it is what the coalition is riding on in Sibu.

Foochows are great warriors! Ngeh Koo Ham and Nga Kor Ming, Sitiawan and Foochows are synonymous to the DAP. These two sons of Foochows had done Malaysians proud. Will the Foochows in Sibu show us their leadership quality, bangkit, and send the DAP candidate into Parliament? Siburians, please rise and show us you care. We needed you more than anything now. We must deny UMNO Baru the 2/3 majority. The rest of the parties in BN are irrelevant.
This is a battle between UMNO Baru and the DAP! And remember this is the time to demand, demand and demand and vote PR. An excellent example of the fighting qualities of the Chinese, is the just concluded Hulu Selangor by election.
Our 1Malaysia PM sensing defeat, went on a spending spree promising tens of millions of projects. In the Chinese majority town of RASA, he said, “Saya, sebagai Perdana Menteri Malaysia, berjanji bantuan sebanyak 3 juta ringgit untuk bangunan sekolah ini”, the Chinese in Rasa responded with a resounding support of PKR, returning with a vote count of 82% in favour of PKR. We hope the Chinese in Sibu, will do the same, and remember, return the DAP candidate with at least 80% support to ensure a victory.
Every vote counts and will the Siburians respond and take the lead? Your victory in Sibu will be a catalyst of change and hopefully, it will lead to the capture of Sarawak by PR. Where there is a will, there is a way! Sibu boleh!
And East Malaysians, remember your role as the kingmaker in Malaysian politics, your votes are very very valuable indeed. In the recently concluded election, each vote was reportedly worth 65,000 ringgit! Get all the roads in Sibu tarred up, electricity, water, everything you need, there could not be a better time now!
Bangkit Sibu, bangkit Sarawak and Sabah!
