Sarawak PKR chairman Baru Bian is the choice of the Movement For Change, Sarawak (MoCS) to be the chief minister of Sarawak should Pakatan Rakyat comes into power after the next state election.

“Today, MoCS officially endorses Baru Bian as the new Sarawak CM in the event of a change of government after the polls,” the movement’s leader Francis Paul Siah announced here Sunday.

“For the past six months, MoCS has been looking for a suitable candidate to present to the people of Sarawak as their new CM. We have found that person in Baru Bian,” he told the MoCS public forum held at a local hotel here.

Siah described Baru as a dedicated public servant although he is actually in private practice as a lawyer.

“He had energetically fought for many victimized land owners over the NCR land issue and had won several landmark cases. He had toiled tirelessly for many years to help not only the Dayaks but other races as well.

“For his dedication to serve the downtrodden in society, Baru has earned the respect and admiration of many Sarawakians,” Siah added.

The MoCS leader said that another important reason why the movement was endorsing Baru was that the PKR chief is a devout Christian and a God-fearing person.

“Anyone who is God-fearing will have a conscience and is unlikely to be greedy and corrupt when he attains high public office,” Siah said.

Baru Bian, a 52-year-old Orang Ulu is the first Dayak politician to be endorsed by MoCS to be a candidate in the coming state election.

In another MoCS public forum in Miri Saturday, Siah announced the movement’s endorsement of five DAP state assembly incumbents. They are Wong Ho Leng (Bukit Assek), Chong Chieng Jen (Kota Sentosa), Chew Ching Sing (Kidurong), Violet Yong (Pending), Ting Tze Fui (Meradong).

MoCS also endorsed two other DAP potential candidates, Dr Wong Hua Seh of Bintulu and Fong Poh Teck of Miri.

Two weeks ago, the movement endorsed its first candidate, PKR’s Dr Michael Teo of Miri.

According to Siah, a MoCS endorsement means a public declaration that the candidate is a person of integrity and substance and that he/she is worthy to seek elective office and deserves the support of the people.

“It also means that the endorsed candidates will receive ground support from MoCS and its affiliated NGO’s during the election campaign,” he said.

Parti Kita president Zaid Ibrahim and SNAP vice-president Augustine Liom were the two guest speakers at the MoCS forum on Sunday.

Speakers at the Saturday forum in Miri were Sarawak DAP chairman Wong Ho Leng and Dr Teo who is Miri PKR chairman.

  2. Based on the Sarawak State Constitution, the Chief Minister will be voted by the ADUNs into office by a simple majority.

That should be the only way, unless the State Constitution has been amended by 2/3 majority ADUNs.

The fact that MoCS go out of their way to “nominate” Baru Bian as CM, should PR win – is begging the question of why the need to do so at this time. For at least one reason, I have mixed feeling about the wisdom in such move.

In the worst case scenario, the coveted CM position may create fissures within PR component party members – and voters, and if such situation should happen: MoCS is in no position of influence to fix the fissure it helped to create.

On another point: the political narrative for the next state election has to be a referendum on Taib misrule (irrespective of whether he is replaced before the election since he will be instrumental in nominating whoever his successor within BN/PBB – who will be molded in his image).

If MoCS had not make those endorsement, PR can possibly agree the list of shortlisted candidates for CM and Deputies, as part of their Election Manifesto so that voters have clear choice. Now, if Baru Bian name is selected by PR – and end up being mention in the Manifesto, then PR can be seem to be inordinately influenced by MoCS.

Baru Bian may be the right choice for CM, but I hope to have argued that forethought and care is required by PR strategists, sympathizers and supporters – and esp MoCS, to avoid creating unnecessary difficulties in the few months ahead.

  4. I want MoCS to also endorse YB Voon Lee Shan as DAP candidate for Batu Lintang.I see him as performing YB. What wrong with him? If not him I am afraid my vote may go to BN/SUPP in protest.

  5. Pakatan Rakyat should also keep their option open to accommodate another worthy Sarawakian currently working in the PM’s department. Yes..you know I mean Idris Jala. He can take up the post of Minister of Trade and Industry or Minister of Natural Resources and Developmentin Sarawak Pakatan Government.

  6. Baru Bian is the right man for the job. He has proven himself as a hard-working politician. MoCS picks the right man. Syabas to Francis and his movement. We support the endorsement.

  9. I like to see Taib and some of his thieves sitting on the Opposition bench after the next state election. I like to see Taib waving with money in his hands in the DUN ,trying to distract the attention of state reps from Pakatan government. That is if he has not gone crazy after the defeat of his corrupted regime and is not admitted to Sentosa Hospital.

  10. Make no mistake, the coming state election will be the dirtiest and Taib and UMNO controlled BN will be all out to win at all cost.Sarawak NGOs and the people must be bold and stand up to any forms of intimidation from BN. If we want real change, lets work together to ensure Baru Bian and Pakatan candidates win more than 2/3 majority.Lets contribute time, efforts, commitment, money and assist in providing logistic to Pakatan It is time to let Taib Mahmud be the Opposition leader in Sarawak. MoCS and voters must ensure there are no more trojan horses in Pakatan Rakyat and expose them before the dissolution of DUN. We must be vigilant at all times to minimise electoral frauds committed by BN and its agencies in every elections.

We can do it. Just vote for change and reform the political system that suppressed our intellectual capacity and impoverished us for the last 47 years.

  11. “Those whom the Gods wish to destroy, HE first make MAD”. Obviously the BN robbers and thieves are showing their madness. The way they act and speak. They abandoned the rakyat a long time ago, so now is the right time for us to STOP SUPPORTING THE BN CROCS! Vote for PR !!! Sdr. Baru, we are with you!

  12. No problem with Baru Bian as the CM if BN Sarawak ditched into Sarawak River and the White Croc hunted. He has the quality amd the committed heart for general people of Sarawak. He knows the suffer of people who lost their lands and even pieces of farms to make a living. At least he is less troublesome compared to some others in the PR camp. God blesses the one who stand out to fight for righteousness and salvage those oppressed, and HE notices those proud and arrogant from afar. HE judges fairly on the day of judgement

  13. PR needs to inform of their option as to who they will nominate under the following conditions (assuming they win the election):

    i. If PKR has the most seat
ii. If DAP has the most seat
iii. If PAS has the most seat.

We the voters want to know and won’t accept “let’s cross the bridge when we come to it”. There will be last minute jostling for the big prize. Perak PR Govt collapse should teach Sarawak PR a thing or two.

Its also not enough to nominate the person to be CM under a PR Government. PR should already form and announce its shadow cabinet. Come to think of it, why not name PR candidates for the election now! PR should also pledge not to concentrate multiple ministries under the CM.

Doing the above will really show PR is different and more people oriented.

    • A workable formula should be whichever party has the most seats, that party is to nominate a candidate for the CM post with two DCMs of different ethnic groups, each from the other two or three parties.

If,for example, PKR has the most seats,
obviously Baru Bian should be the CM, with a Chinese and a Malay as DCMs each from the other two parties. The same principle also applies equally to DAP, PAS or SNAP.

The CM should not have more than ministries other than his own. The finance and resource and planning should be headed by different ministers who must send the issuace of timber licences, major expenditures, awarding of
contracts,& etc to DUN for debate and approval and upon approval, such confirmation must be signed by the espective minister and counter signed by the CM to avoid abuse of power

    • Hi ibat,

You left out SNAP-The-BN-Frog who wanted to contest in 28 seats one week ago.

      Now, with BN’s, Jeffery’s & KITA’s support, SNAP-The-BN-Frog will be contesting 71 seats.

Look like the people of Sarawak will continue to be slaves of the evil BN, no thank to SNAP-The-BN-Frog.

      • Dayaks must not be more divided into too many opposition parties. They already are in split into so many BN parties. Those outside of the BN must think rationally. The common enemy of PKR and SNAP is the BN, not among themselves.

Other races in Sarawak, including the Chinese, are ready to accept a Dayak chief minister. It’s time they prove worthy of Chinese support. Start by not squabbling among PKR and SNAP members.

The key word is “Work Together”. If the Dayaks cannot, they will bring everybody down with them. Think of the people first, less of your own ambition.

  14. Definitely good choice with Chong Chieng Jen or Wong Ho Leng as his deputy. Question is will the PKR muslims accept him as their choice. Somehow there is still major doubt that even AI will accept non-malay as the Chief Minister. Won’t be surprise if there’s a major shift in support of a non-,alay CM if ever Pakatan comes into power.

  15. Abuse of power and corruption are the main ingredients that will eventually bring down a govt. The catalysts for the citizenry to rise are unemployment, rising food prices and perhaps persecution.

But in order to have a spontaneous uprising, the people, by all accounts, need to be from the same ethnic group. It’s not to say different people cannot join together to oppose a dictatorship. It can happen and has happened before in history.

What I’m trying to say is that it’s more likely to happen when the same ethnicity is involved. It has nothing to do with religion or any ideology as can be seen in the examples of Tunisia and Egypt. The people are just fed up with those dictatorial regimes where the so-called elites abuse their powers.

The protests in Albania is another example of the people or opposition against a corrupted govt led by Berisha. It will not be a surprise if later we start to see the same protests coming out of countries like Algeria, Yemen, Jordan and some other countries in the Arab world where despotic rulers abound.

In the Asia-Pacific region, it has happened in The Philippines when they ousted Marcos and his extravagant wife Imelda. So was Ben Ali’s wife. As you can see here, there’s so much similarities among creatures with an insatiable taste for luxury, greed and power.

Assuming Japan is ruled by a dictator who drained the country dry and leave the Japanese people with no jobs and high food prices and the country close to economic ruins, would the homogenous Japanese not rise against the govt eventually once they reached the breaking point?
Again, it’s not easy to evoke a change unless a society is educated and intelligent enough to discern what has gone wrong within a country. If a large portion of the society is indoctrinated for ages that everything for them is still hunky dory, then the corrupt will continue to hold sway.

In a multi-racial society as can be found in some Asian countries, it may not be so easy to see the sparks fly unless they can all come together with the same dream and a common cause. But we never can tell.

How would we to know that Gobachev would start the ball rolling with Perestoika and Glasnost resulting in the breakup of the Soviet Union? And the fall of the Berlin Wall?
South Africa president Frederik William de Klerk also set the ball rolling with the release of Nelson Mandela and bringing about the end of apartheid.

All this goes to show that nothing lasts forever. There’s a time and place for everything. When change comes, a new era will begin. Sometimes, it takes a little bit more time for the apple to become rotten, totally rotten before it’s thrown away for good.
