Clash of Iban slogans between SPDP and Snap

FMT Staff

Aiming to stoke a revival amongst Dayak, Snap’s battlecry is irking rival Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party.

The old Iban war cry ‘Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban’ which literally means “as long as there is life, there is fight” may have been good in the old days but can it hold a candle in this new world?

Well, Barisan Nasional coalition partner Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) thinks not.

SPDP has accused its rival, the re-emerging Sarawak National Party (Snap), of manipulating the famous Iban slogan in a bid to stir up the emotions of Dayaks in rural Sarawak.

Chiding Snap, SPDP vice-president Sylvester Entri Muran said the opposition party is ‘simply wasting its time’ touting the slogan.

“If their slogan is “Agi Idup, Agi Ngelaban,” our slogan in Barisan Nasional is “Agi Idup, Agi Mansang (as long as there is life, there is development),” he said.

Entri said Snap had the slogan printed on all its calendars which were being distributed in the rural areas.

He said the words were aimed at inciting the voters to resist government efforts to bring development.

Wasteful effort

Entri, who is the Marudi incumbent, is expected to face Snap president Edwin Dundang in the upcoming state polls.

Speaking to reporters at a longhouse groundbreaking ceremony in Bakong, about 40 kilometres from here, Entrie described Dundang’s strategy of distributing these calenders as a ‘wasteful effort.’

“What the Barisan Nasional distributes will ensure that assets of the people would be inherited by their next generation,” he said alluding to the land titles which the government was issuing to the longhouse folks involved in the Bakong project.

Land titles are among key issues in the run up to the state polls set for April 16.

SPDP, which has been allocated nine seats, is likely to see stiff contest in at least four of its constituencies, including Marudi.

Dismissing speculations that his time was up, Entrie said only the BN governmet had the ability to ‘deliver the goods.’

  1. BN1 = PBB, SUPP, PRS and SPDP and BN2 = SNAP . Together they are slaves of the thief minister Taib Mahmud. Together they form the BN government of Taib, by Taib and for Taib.

Kick out all the uselss and corrupt BN stooges.

  2. “Agi idup agi ngelaban” vs “agi idup agi mansang”, the latter put up by Entri. How interesting! Since 1963 the Dayaks have been promised developments. In fact the very main reasons why the few then Sarawak leaders agreed to form Malaysia was the promise of developments. A promise to be free from communists’ influence was one other. Then communism and its threat of getting hold in our part of the world were serious that for Sarawak staying alone would be unsafe. Hence Malaysia was agreed. Now communism has gone but not due to Malaysia: it was due to Deng Siaw Ping who changed tactics.
And developments in Sarawak, oh yes from Lundu to Limbang/Lawas timber resources which had been the pride of this state, are now all but gone. Even timber stands on ncr lands are gone as well. Now we have new development: oil palm plantations are replacing those timbers on lands where they had been found aplenty.

With all these developments however there are new crops of wealthy people very visible, although they are not the ordinary folks. Pehin Taib in his recent interview to counter allegations against him said that per capita income has increased by leaps and bound under his watch. Per capita is simply dividing gross income against the total number of population. It is definitely not the best means to determine income distribution amongst the people at all. Indeed if the Sarawak Report is true the family members of Taib, his brothers, sisters, his children and grand children, they all have taken a huge chunk of those billion of Ringgits. Definitely though their wealths aplenty are for all to see in their mansions, expensive cars, and their livestyles comparable with the high and mighty in the West.

Compare the money Jabu is soon to release to landowners in SALCRA the total sum of RM74.0 million. Divide that with the number of landowners each will get a small sum. Likewise the dividend and bonus paid to Pelita-Rimbunan Hijau Kampung Selampit or Kendaie Projects: they are paid RM200.00 per hactares merely. And even that money in actual term only one-third of it is payable to landowners. The rest of it is payable to LCDA.

On the workers side they are only paid wages of less than RM20. 00 per day in all plantation lands. And this explain why a lot of foreign workers are employed. Sarawakians are unwilling to work on such a pittance.

In short what development are you talking about, Silvester Entre or are you in fact called by other name? It is very obvious during each election times peoples are told to wait for developments “which only BN can deliver”. BN has ruled Sarawak since Independence yet the ordinary folks are still merely given the same promises over and over again. In the meantimes the leaders of BN and their proxies and cronies have benefitted a lot. Thus who can say it otherwise than that the politics of development as BN strategy have benefitted their leaders!.

  8. The rural Dayaks should know by now whom they can depend on to protect their NCR lands from been taken away, whom they can depend on to ensure they enjoy the freedom of worship, whom they can depend on to ensure a progressive and systematic socio-developments in their areas. In the last 47 years, UMNO controlled BN seemed to be doing only the planning and when they did finally deliver a part of the project it was at snail pace to coincide with an election or a buy election after the demise of an MP or ADUN.

The government system needs to be changed and a real and thorough political reform will ensure the real benefits of development reach the rakyat and not hijacked by the thief minister and BN Aduns themselves.

Slogan means nothing if the politicians and their parties are not willing and not able to stop the thief minister from plundering Sarawak and grabbing NCR lands.

  9. OK, then Crocodile bin Abdullah aka Entri Muran, define your “mansang”. If it means stealing land for oil palm plantations for the politicians and their big companies AND stealing timber from natives and polluting their rivers AND building dams, drowning longhouses and sacred burial grouds all over Sarawak AND giving away our oil and gas profits to Putrajaya, WE DON’T WANT IT!!
