Sarawak Report

Happy to sign the plaque for the Kingwood Hotel – after all I have a major shareholding!
Industry insiders have revealed that the main suppliers of timber to the cheating Asia Plywood Company, are the well-known Sarawak tycoons, the Miri-based Hii family.
Asia Plywood, which rents the major saw mill ‘Tegas Kesuma’, based in Tanjung Manis, is Malaysia’s largest plywood company.
Earlier this week it was caught out deceiving regulators and customers in the UK and elsewhere by pretending that hardwood chopped out of Sarawak’s dwindling forests was sustainable pinewood. [see our investigation]

Tegas Kesuma – saw mill chewing up Sarawak’s precious Meranti to make plywood.
We can now disclose that a major provider to Tegas Kesuma is the company Fonsen Timber Sdn Bhd, owned by the Hii family concern Fonsen Holdings.
The Hiis have been granted licences by their close associate, Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud, to strip the remaining forests from areas around Bintulu, earmarked for further oil palm plantations.
Another major supplier to the mill was the now dissolved Excellent Future, which was registered at the same address in Jalan Masjid in Miri as Fonsen Holdings and likewise controlled by the Hiis.

Hii King Chiong, key crony and Taib funder
Insiders have confirmed that the main director of the companies is Hii King Chiong, who is the son of Hii Yii Peng, the tycoon who is best known as the owner of Kingwood Hotel group.
Top Taib cronies
Taib, who issues all concessions in the state, is personally responsible for the relentless and unrestrained plunder of timber over the past 30 years. Before him it was his uncle, whom at the time Taib saw fit to criticise for his greedy destruction of Sarawak’s irreplaceable jungle!
It is worth pointing out that no wood from Sarawak has ever achieved certification from the internationally recognised Forest Stewardship Council, simply because Taib’s logging has been so unsustainable.

Mr Charitable Gesture – Hii is back by Taib’s side
So, it is particularly revealing to investigate the business interests that link the Hiis, who are such key beneficiaries of timber and plantation concessions, with the Chief Minister himself and his family.
Take, for example, one of the largest plantation enterprises in Sarawak, Delta Padi, which is currently blessed with concessions handed out at rock bottom rates by the Chief Minister. Delta Padi has lucratively logged thousands of hectares of wild forest in Pulau Bruit and in other areas around Mukah, before setting about planting oil palm. Local people were offered nothing for the destruction of their livelihoods.

Again, charitably at the CM’s side….. Mr Hii supports Mukah Chinese Benevolent Board Building
So, who owns Delta Padi? It turns out to be a joint venture between the Hii family and a company Mesti Bersatu.
We have mentioned Mesti Bersatu before. It turns out to be owned by Abdul Taib Mahmud himself and members of his own family!
As numerous insiders have testified, the corrupt system favoured by the Chief Minister is for the money for such joint ventures to by put up by favoured tycoons. His own contribution to the venture is his willingness to abuse his position of political power.
Thus he can be seen handing his own family companies great chunks of state owned territory (or more often Native Customary Land) as part of a series of joint ventures funded by others!

Key major shareholder of Fonsen – the Hii family
Kingwood Hotels

Taib has a stake in Sarawak’s top hotel chain
Delta Padi is just one example of blatant corruption by the Chief Minister to enrich himself, using joint ventures with the crony Hii family. Another is the Kingwood group.
Kingwood Inns are one of the best known hotel chains in Sarawak. The group also owns a major travel company called Kingwood Travel Services Sdn Bhd.
So, it perhaps comes as little surprise to learn that Taib also has a major stake in this profitable group of concerns. A substantial shareholder of Kingwood Inn Sdn Bhd, is again Mesti Bersatu!
At this point Sarawak Report is forced to ask, yet again, that the Chief Minister publicly defend his extraordinary claim that he and his family do no business in Sarawak!

Look who has a fat stake in Kingwood Inns Sdn Bhd – Chief Minister Taib Mahmud, through his company Mesti Bersatu!
More kickbacks from the Hiis
There are plenty of other Taib family members who are also blatantly taking advantage of the Hii family’s ‘obligations’ as a top receiver of favours and concessions from ‘Uncle Taib’. These include daughters and sisters.
How is works is, since Uncle Taib has long since ditched the conventional practice of open tendering, in favour of corruptly handing out licences behind closed doors, his family members are able to crowd in and demand kickbacks from the lucky cronies he chooses.

Back at Hiis side! This time they were funding the Islamic Fashion Show in Monaco!
Taib is also able to squeeze these same businessmen into funding his political expenses (such as bribing voters in the coming Federal Election and supporting proteges in the SUPP) and also other events such as the ludicrous Islamic Fashion Show in Monaco, which Taib supposedly sponsored in 2010.
In fact it was the Hii family who put up a large chunk of the money that Taib flashed around in Monaco on that occasion, as he attempted to ingratiate himself with the plainly naive Prince Albert. The Prince gratefully accepted a 100,000 euro cheque for his Foundation handed to him by PM Najib’s wife Rosmah, but the money was actually funded by the Hiis and funnelled through Taib!

A chance to pay off Prince and PM at the same time, thanks to money put up by the Hiis!
What irony that Prince Albert’s Foundation is supposed to be dedicated to saving the Environment! Readers are welcome to calculate how many trees the Hii family would have had to unsustainably log to make that 100,000 euro payment to present to the playboy Prince!
Their reward? A photo with Taib at the event, to which they had dutifully turned up and the promise of many more perks and concessions, as long as they continue to pay suitable kickbacks!
As the very large baubles worn by the Taib family women at the event and round their newest tax haven playground amply demonstrate, the CM could of course have found the money himself. However, for Taib wealth has become a sickness and he is famously mean.
Rich venture

Taib family line up in Monaco.
Other close ventures with Taib family members include Bormill Wood (Trengganu) Sdn Bhd, which is owned by Jamilah and Hii’s and The Sarawak Company Sdn Bhd, which is owned by Taib’s brother Tufail and the Hii’s.
And what about the venture between Taib’s sister Raziah Mahmud and the Hii family over the Miri Airport by-pass road? As we have previously reported, Taib handed his sister large areas of land in the town through her companies Kumpulan Parabena and Miri Properties (in which Taib himself owns a stake, once again via Mesti Bersatu).
She subcontracted the development of the area and the road, which was commissioned by Taib, was subcontracted to the Hii company Rich Venture!
The ‘clever businesswoman’ Raziah has always remembered to skim off a large cut for her effortless middle-man transactions, made possible by her brother’s toe-curling corruption!

The big time bodeker of Taib, Karim Hamzah, also pocketed about RM20 million when he sold a NCR land converted to PLL by his boss for his benefit to a west malaysian company.

Many Sarawakians, even those in urban area are simple minded and still clueless about the massive scale of corruption and how the political system works. They think ” Government” is good, as goverment built road, airports, schools and give them a few hundred $ before election… they think “Opposition” is bad as they will lose their few hundred $ if opposition win.

When Taib assumed the position of CM in march 1981, he promised to make Sarawak the richest state in the federation and after 31 years, Sarawakians found themselves among the three poorest states in Malaysia despite our vast natural resources and petroleum. Now he is lying through his teeth yet again to make Sarawak the richest by 2030.
All his lies and deceits over the last 31 years can be found in a series of PR work compiled by the Oxford Business Group at the expense of Sarawak tax payers. http://chiefministertaib.sarawak.gov.my/en/perspectives/literature

POEM DEDICATED TO TAIB MAHMUD
A fart it is a pleasant thing,
It gives the belly ease,
It warms the bed in winter,
And suffocates the fleas.
A fart can be quiet,
A fart can be loud,
Some leave a powerful,
Poisonous cloud
[]
A fart can be short,
Or a fart can be long,
Some farts have been known
To sound like a song……
A fart can create
A most curious medley,
A fart can be harmless,
Or silent, and deadly.
[]
A fart might not smell,
While others are vile,
A fart may pass quickly,
Or linger a while……
[]
A fart can occur
In a number of places,
And leave everyone there,
With strange looks on their faces.
[]
From wide-open prairie,
To small elevators,
A fart will find all of
Us sooner or later.
[]
But farts are all bad,
Is simply not true-
We must never forget……..
Sweet old farts like you!

SAME CRAP SHITTED BY TAIB & FAMILY
“How can you use that salary as a yardstick, you know? I mean, you must give people an opportunity…I mean, if Taib is the chief minister, I don’t think we should stop the children, (that) the children cannot be rich or the family cannot be rich.
“He has been in power for the last 40 years… he has been open to a lot of opportunities, whereby his children also can participate in business, and then, using the kind of networking that they can have, and then build up their riches.”
So how did Abu Bekir the crowned CM get to have assets worth over $800 million? And his ex-wife could claim $400 million?
How many Sarawak peppercorns did he have to sell to make $1 billion ? He started as baby over 40 years ago before Dad got into power!

WHEN DID TRUTH BECOME SLANDER?
The Free Radio Sarawak interview with the Taib running dog is a farce – it really exposes the crooked nature of those plundering Sarawak.
When ever they bark in public these dogs are just exposing more of their ugly side.
When was it legitimate open and transparent for public servants which Taib and his ilk (MPs etc) are no more and no less- to abuse power entrusted them and loot the country and people?
Taib was in good company with his Foochow collaborators who have ripped off Sarawak big time.
This small F-clique are comfortable to let Taib take the hog’s share as long as they also make a great profit from stolen NCR land and so on all these 48 years of fraudulent independence in Malaysia!
Let us remind ourselves that they are just a minority of robbers and do not represent other hardworking and struggle Chinese people.
Yes they have gone global on the backs of all honest Sarawakians!

Abdul Karim: ‘Unfair’ to stop Taib from amassing fortune
By Keruah Usit, Malaysia Kini, 8 Dec 2010
Abdul Karim Hamzah, chief political secretary to Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud, has told Radio Free Sarawak (RFS) that it is only “fair” that Taib should accumulate wealth in public office.
In an interview with RFS, a shortwave station outside the control of the government, Abdul Karim dismissed criticism of the enormous wealth of Taib’s family, as reported by the Sarawak Report website. He also discussed the controversial Sarawak Government White Paper on ‘unhealthy political practices’, proposed by Abdul Karim himself.
“Personally, I see there must be limitations to everything, you cannot have a free flow of everything… the freedom of speech, there are limitations. I mean to take up an action (for libel) is not as simple (as it seems)… sometimes it’s better to just leave things as they are, because it will, after a while, quieten down.”
He brushed off the furore surrounding detailed descriptions on Sarawak Report of Taib’s property fortunes in Europe and North America, and land acquisition schemes in Sarawak.
“The way I see it, it’s not causing any problem, lah. What is the problem with Sarawak Report? Have they been saying something that is very defamatory or bad? I don’t think it’s wrong to be rich.”
Asked how Taib and his children could have achieved their fabulous wealth based on his modest ministerial salary, he replied: “How can you use that salary as a yardstick, you know? I mean, you must give people an opportunity…I mean, if Taib is the chief minister, I don’t think we should stop the children, (that) the children cannot be rich or the family cannot be rich.
“He has been in power for the last 40 years… he has been open to a lot of opportunities, whereby his children also can participate in business, and then, using the kind of networking that they can have, and then build up their riches.”
Asked what these opportunities were, Abdul Karim explained: “Well, opportunities to participate in business and things like that, you know? Take for example… if you are a minister or chief minister, then somebody comes to you and wants to sell a piece of land at a very cheap price… and then through the years, that value of land suddenly shoots up 1,000 times… and you sell it off and make some money, is that tantamount to corruption?
“If you use your position to secure certain businesses or certain contracts, then I would say that would be an abuse of power, but then that depends again, whether that is happening or not…”
He avoided the topic of allegations of Taib distributing contracts to companies under the control of his family members, including CMS and Naim Holdings.
Asked whether cronyism exists in Sarawak politics, Abdul Karim said: “You cannot, you must not equate Taib’s family with himself… he has got a lot of ‘cronies’. Everybody knows him.
“So, after 40 years in the government, don’t you think he deserves to have some level of satisfaction, or some level of wealth that he could accumulate in the right way? Are you trying to tell me politicians must be poor? Only businessmen are allowed to be rich? That’s very unfair!
“I mean, if that is how we look at it, then we are not practising democracy, because you are depriving a politician from… having a good way of life. Only the businessmen are allowed to be rich, to fly around, have holidays? The politicians are not?”
“The purpose of the White Paper is to… to… to… more or less define what are the… who are those people who are undesirable, I would say, who could be a threat to the… there are certain… certain quarters of people, whether they are politicians, whether they are NGOs, or whether they are from the media even, whether they are from Malaysia or from overseas, who seem to be wanting to break us up, who seem to be… I mean they couldn’t be bothered, they don’t have any love for us.
“That’s why we want the state to set a proper guideline, who can be welcome and who should not be welcome, to identify what are the things that we can consider as a threat, who are those people who we know have blatantly tried to run down the government, tried to create instability, whether economically or politically, in the state.
“These are the people we should stop, whether they are from the government or not from the government, or whether they are from overseas or whether they are from Malaysia itself, or religious… this covers every angle, I would say.
“We have every right to look after our state… Immigration is in our hands, when we formed Malaysia… we have got that right, that immigration right.
“If we feel that they are not desirable to us, if they are known to be… who have been running us down, from their writing, from their blogs, I think if they are not a friend to Sarawak, I would say, then we stop them!
“The opposition always thinks it is against them, not realising that it is also against certain people in Barisan Nasional (BN).”
Abdul Karim declined to name those in BN who may be kept out of the state.
In response to speculation that the state government wants to muzzle websites like Sarawak Report, Abdul Karim replied, “We can’t stop them from publishing, they can have their own right, because the world is free, you see… the Internet world, you can put anything inside there. But then when it comes to coming into our state, we do not want them.”
Abdul Karim concluded his RFS interview by alleging that US president Barack Obama, and British leaders like former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, are all “filthy rich”, and that Taib has done nothing wrong in accumulating wealth.

Taib praises Foochow spirit
The Star, Sunday November 21, 2004
KUCHING: Foochows can play a meaningful role in the globalised world because of their pioneering spirit, co-operation and goodwill towards others, Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said.
He said the Foochows were well-known for their pioneering spirit in turning difficult situations into opportunities for success.
“This was the spirit of the 1,118 Foochows who came to Sibu one century ago under Wong Nai Siong. I hope this spirit will never be lost among the younger generation because it is a great asset,” he said when opening the eighth convention of the World Federation of Fuzhou Associations here yesterday.
TOKEN OF THANKS: Organising chairman Ling Beng Hui (left) presenting a souvenir to Taib during the World Federation of Fuzhou Associations convention in Kuching yesterday.
The community, he said, were resourceful, willing to face challenges and prepared to put in all their effort in order to succeed.
Moreover, the Foochows had learned to maintain values of charity and goodwill towards others, he said.
Taib said the Foochows’ active participation in business and trade served as an example for others in Asia to follow suit.
The federation’s president Datuk Seri Burhan Uray said Foochows were known to be hardworking, dedicated and result-oriented.
“I hope future generations of Foochows will continue to possess these qualities,” he said.
He added that the convention was an opportunity for Foochows around the world to make contacts and create strong networks among themselves.
Nearly 3,000 Foochows from 16 countries attended the three-day convention which began on Friday.

Circulate all these exposes to the whole wide world so that all concerned NGOs, Environmentalists and every living Malaysians in overseas will be well informed and report back of any of Taib and families’ investments overseas not already known or exposed. Pakatan must now surely apply more pressure on MACC and PDRM on the numerous police and MACC reports lodged against Taib over the years of which the PM himself, MACC and the Police are sitting on and not taking any actions at all.
All concerned Sarawakians living in or around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor must organise a massive rally like Bersih 2.0, in the capital city, against the paramount thief minister of Sarawak in the coming days or weeks. We must take ownership of our own state and its assets by kicking out Taib and BN and making sure Taib, family members and cronies are investigated for blatant corruptions and power abuses. This rally will also be a strong protest against Najib for protecting Taib Mahmud.

Why are we not surprised by this piece of news? It’s the same old story. I help you you help me syndrome perpetuated by Umno and practiced faithfully by Taib. WHAT HAS PETRONAS DONE WITH THE OIL MONEY GIVEN AWAY BY TAIB SINCE 1974???
(Check the number of UMNO oil billionaires and millionaires!)
Petronas money – by Jeffrey Kittingan
IT’S HIGH TIME TO REVIEW THE PETRONAS OIL ROYALTY AGREEMENTS!
In view of the shocking developments from inevitable results of the sudden oil price hike, I would like to raise several issues with regards to the situation in Petronas which I believe most people are NOT aware of.
This is especially pertinent in the face of several revelations, such as the fact that the oil wells in Sabah will dry up six years from now. The issue has also been raised that Petronas “could go bust in 2018″, forcing us to ask:
Where have all the huge amounts of Petronas money gone to?
Had Petronas been managed so badly that despite it being the nation’s biggest money earner, it is now facing the possibility of going bust (bankrupt)?
The first problem with Petronas is the fact that it was designed to be a SECRETIVE organisation worse that a “kongsi gelap”. The Petronas agreements have been classified secret. WHY? What clauses are in the agreement are so sensitive that nobody should know? This secrecy also includes the secrecy of Petronas detailed Annual Report which is shielded from public eyes and scrutiny, making it an organization without public accountability.
Petronas is therefore more a sole proprietorship completely and secretively owned by the Prime Minister then a public government owned company! What is so secretive that it cannot be revealed and only the Prime Minister has total complete knowledge? Are we suppose to TRUST the Prime Minister and have FAITH in him after all the scandals, “curi duit rakyat” cases and fiascos continuing to hit us?
The other shocking revelation that has come to my knowledge is that 80% of the oil produced by Petronas is not sold directly to the world market but is channelled through 6 OPTION HOLDERS who obtain the supply from Petronas at well below market prices (1974 prices to be exact). These option holders or agents are the ones reaping the benefits and huge profits in the oil price hikes.
Who are these people – the lucky 6 Option Holders?
Why are they there in the first place?
Who chose them?
Why are they so lucky over the other 28 million Malaysians?
Why am I not chosen?
Why and Who created such a STUPID system for PETRONAS?
Are these people in fact cronies representing certain people with private interests and personal private pockets?
It is also understood that this supply through the option holders is sold by contracts with a binding agreement for 20 or 30 years, causing huge losses for Petronas when and every time oil price increases. Petronas would have to continue selling at the agreed old price without gaining any benefits from any increase in the world oil prices. At the same time, Petronas has to buy back the oil for local consumption from the world market at market prices.
See how Petronas is losing our rakyat’s money faster than BINGO?
And do you now understand why the BN government keeps CRYING and WAILING about being unable to SUBSIDISE the petrol prices any longer and why Idris Jala is WEEPING that the country is going bankrupt in a couple of years?
Any IDIOT can tell you that no business can sustain like this – sell cheap because Petronas is tied to the age old low price for 20-30 years and buy back at absolute SKY HIGH market price – without going BANKRUPT faster than BINGO! By business logic, Petronas should be highly profitable if they sell our high grade Malaysian crude at market price (higher than Arabian crude because our crude is high quality with low sulphur), and buy back Arabian crude at market price (lower than our selling price).
Why and how we got ourselves into this dire straits deserve a White Paper or a Royal Commission of Inquiry… and worse why the IDIOTS responsible are not letting go after raking BILLIONS in profits since 1974? Why so greedy? Do they want to continue milking the poor rakyat until the end of the world?
Only 20% of Petronas’s supply is sold through direct open bidding.
Thus, Petronas is sadly not maximising its revenue and profits by dealing directly with the open world market. Instead it has been incurring incalculable losses for the nation and for the people. How much this monstrous loss is, we will never know… until we get an honest Prime Minister or until we topple the BN government.
The Members of Parliament and the state governments should boldly raise this very important issue in Parliament or directly with the federal government for the benefit of the oil-producing states and the people. The BN MPs seem to be quite hopeless in this respect, cowering in fear, whimpering in their little corners and not even daring to utter the word “oil” or “Petronas”… such useless people should be removed and voted out of office. They are supposed to be representatives of the people or rakyat, and are supposed to keep the government in check to ensure the interests of the people are taken care of.
Instead, these useless MPs are supporting the plundering or are part of the plundering and robbing, on top of demands for contracts and more contracts! They take care of their own pockets as FIRST priority, and the pockets of their cronies as SECOND priority. The people and rakyat???? They won’t even bat an eyelid!
There is a window of opportunity for all of us to DEMAND a REVIEW of the Petronas agreements and to make Petronas OPEN and TRANSPARENT.
We should also demand that the system of having the 6 option holders be abolished. A new system should be created in which the three oil-producing states are in control of the marketing arm of Petronas, to make Petronas trade directly in the world market with the aim of maximising revenue for the benefit of the nation.
Obviously, Petronas is a huge business organisation which is not accountable, secretive, and open to a lot of abuses by the Prime Minister himself, including the decision to use its revenue to bail out various individuals who faced bankruptcy in the midst of the Asian economic crisis 13 years ago.
If the federal government truly wants to be RESPONSIBLE and ACCOUNTABLE to the people as it claims it wants to be, they should have long time ago proved their SINCERITY for excellent governance by opening up FULL PUBLIC TRANSPARENCY ACCOUNTING into Petronas’s revenue and expenses!!!
