When all the Non-Malays leave Malaysia

Iskandar Dzulkarnain

As the days go by, more and more depressing news is cropping up. Self-styled First Lady Rosmah Mansor is hogging the headlines for the wrong reasons over an honorary doctorate of law. So too is another well-educated and scandal-tainted Umno woman bigwig – Shahrizat Jalil.

News that ex-Petronas Chief Hassan Merican has left to work for a huge company in Singapore made me feel both proud and sad at the same time. We all know which way the wind is blowing and it is not really in the right direction at all.

Unfair policy

Not too long ago, Deputy Education Minister Wee made the statement that the PDA scholarships for bright students have been abused. Many students with 10A’s are not offered PDA scholarships, while those with 4-5A’s managed to secure them. It shows that even our brainy, bright, young talents are being discriminated against and barred from a chance to further their education overseas.

These will a big loss to our country’s talent pool and to the nation’s future. What a sad state of affairs, when even being the best is not enough. Will an investigation be conducted as to who these beneficiaries are and whether they rightly deserve such coveted scholarships?

Although it may not be a serious controversy, our bright young minds and talented geniuses who cannot afford an overseas education without financial support will only contribute to the unstoppable brain drain of this nation. Our hopes to be a first world nation are dashed on the rocks. These are our future leaders who will chart the course and contribute to the grand design of this nation.

Driving talent away

Today, our pool of leaders are nothing to shout about. Some of them are a bunch of clowns. Every time they open their mouths, we can see through their idiotic minds, no matter how very hard they try to hide the fact that they are not very bright. Even some leaders have questionable overseas degrees. Without highly skilled intellectuals to be our leaders who can see through the greed, corruption and inequality, it will be very difficult for Malaysia to attain First World status.

Malaysia seems less and less a ‘Promised Land’ to the non-Malays. With a mock democracy and an authoritarian system of Government in place, Malaysians who cherish democracy, meritocracy, freedom of expression, equality and freedom of religion are discouraged from regarding Malaysia as their homeland.

Those who can afford it have to save to send their offspring overseas to further their studies and to seek employment. Once their offspring have secured an education and employment in their host countries, many will apply for Permanent Residence to join their offspring. Bringing with them all the wealth and talent to their host country. Malaysia continues to lose its wealth and its valuable human resources.

Uphill battle

Talent Corporation is facing an uphill daunting task to encourage Malaysians to return and serve the country. Those who say it is another for-show hype by Prime Minister Najib Razak are right. Malaysia simply doesn’t offer a conducive environment for the highly skilled and talented to return and help build this nation. Current policies in place, are a gross hindrance. Those who actually return mourn the rashness of their decision, and many cannot wait to leave again.

Malaysia could be such a lovely place to build an existence. Its citizens could have coexisted in peace and harmony. There is so much going for this country, but our leaders have made a terrible mess of it. The level of corruption is simply unacceptable. Equal opportunities are in shambles. Threats of racial conflicts and religious sensitivities still exist. Dinosaur leaders refuse to relinquish their powers and continue to overstay their welcome. Malaysians are humiliated and abused by the government that is supposed to serve them.

And now, they continue to threaten the peace of this country by resorting to racial conflicts to split the nation. Non-Malays are constantly reminded that Malays own this country. Malay Supremacy should not be questioned and Islam is superior to all other religions – this is being shoved down their throats each day.

Unappreciated, they will leave

Non-Malays feel sidelined as 2nd class citizens, humiliated that they cannot be equal and even encouraged to leave the country if they are not happy. Barisan Nasional, who is supposed to be the only political coalition capable of serving this nation, stands blind and impotent, as the abuse continues unabated.

One day, we may see the exodus of the non-Malays from this country. When the last Chinese is gone, we will start to miss the pretty, miniskirted Chinese lasses, and the corporate-dressed Chinese executives. Gone will be the sound of Chinese music during Chinese New Year, the dragon dances, the firecrackers, the red angpows, the Chinese operas and kung fu movies on TV. Left behind will be empty buildings from Chinese businesses and the friendly neighborhood sundry shops, whose owners used to chatter in ‘broken’ Malay. Gone will be the Chinatown in Petaling Street, with its cheerful bright lights, myriad of colors and all kinds of everything for sale amidst the incessant Chinese chatter.

When the Indians follow, there will be no more dark beauties in colorful saris, no more colorful temples, no more Hindi movies and the interesting Indian and Hindu culture. No more fiery chicken curries, tosai, tandoori and  papadam. And with it goes the Hindu culture with the carrying of the Kavadi and Chariots of the Gods of Thaipusam and Festival of Lights of Deepavali. No more laughter of happy Indian children playing.

With the Christians joining the exodus, there will be no more sounds of Christmas carols, green Christmas trees dressed in white cotton and decorations. No more Santa Claus in the Shopping Complexes and Shopping Centres. No more Christmas turkey dinners in hotels all over the country and no reason to celebrate the New Year, which Malay hardliners say is a Christian celebration.

Kuala Lumpur, as Malaysia leans to a more Islamic way of life, will see masses of people going to work all dressed in headscarves and Baju Melayu, with even your own sister hardly recognizable among the crowd. How boring it will be without the non-Malays to lend flair, culture, color, identity and fun to our way of life. Malaysia may one day be like Saudi Arabia. All work and no play or is the other way around -  all play and no work!

It will be really sad for Malaysia to lose all its ethnicity, diversity, its potpourri of culture and its identity. Aren’t we selling Malaysia as truly Asia? Why must the government continue to play with our sensitivities and keep tearing us apart?

If the non-Malays go, I will leave too. No sense hanging around and continue to be abused by these ‘half aliens’ even though they may be of the same race as me. Suddenly, New Zealand sounds very appealing. I’m sure they need average journalists like me with no sense of humor.

  1. I can see commentators who hate Chinese, even asking Chinese to leave, what I can tell them, NO PROBLEM, in every corner of the world, we find Chinese, many of them are happy and doing well. Thank you for your sincere words. they won’t feel anything instead, Chinese are industrious people, wherever they go, they can survive and prove themselves to be competent contributors and NOT A TONGKAT to their landed countries. Dear Chinese, be grateful to them because they tell you directly so you don’t have to waste your time, energy, money and effort anymore, the outside world welcomes you, welcome you on board, prove to them, you are not unwanted, there are many beautiful and good countries are opening their doors to welcome you. Let them self sufficient and build up an ever successful bolehland. Cheers.

Chinese praised for emphasis on education
Taib saluted them for going to great lengths to put up schools wherever they went so that their children could have a better future
Borneo Post, Tuesday, August 14, 2001

KUCHING – The Chinese community today won praise from the Chief Minister for their resolve in wanting to educate their young.

He saluted them for going to great lengths to put up schools wherever they went so that their children could have a better future.

“Because of the strong Chinese emphasis on education, the community would struggle to build schools wherever they go to give opportunities to their children to acquire education,” said Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud.

He was reacting to the community’s effort to raise RM1 million to build the recently completed SJK Chung Hua Asajaya.

Taib who officially opened the school today said former students had chipped in generously, adding it was no mean feat in a small place like Asajaya.

Towards this end the Chief Minister urged former students of schools to contribute to their alma mater for the benefit of the younger generation.

Taib who also laid the foundation stone for a multi-purpose centre in Asajaya said every effort should be made at preparing schoolchildren for the borderless economy, both in terms of technology and language skills.

In rural areas, for instance, it is becoming increasingly imperative for students to acquire information and communication technology skills so that they can work as fast and as efficient as their counterparts in Kuching, he said.

“As the world changes, their proficiency in several languages and adeptness in ICT would be able to assist them to easily establish trade with many countries, particularly China which will become the greatest economic giant in Asia,” he added.

In the same vein the Chief Minister said the development of new products in the State, like computer chips, would require traders with better qualifications and higher competency levels.

To face these challenges, people in the State, regardless whether they are Bumiputras or non- Bumiputras, have to cooperate and work together as ‘anak Sarawak’ to achieve success, he said.

At the function Taib also presented a State government donation of RM50,000 for the school to upgrade its computer facilities.

Earlier, Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr George Chan called on the Chinese community in Asajaya to continue supporting the present leadership in the State.

    Taib praises Foochow spirit
The Star, Sunday November 21, 2004

KUCHING: Foochows can play a meaningful role in the globalised world because of their pioneering spirit, co-operation and goodwill towards others, Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said.

He said the Foochows were well-known for their pioneering spirit in turning difficult situations into opportunities for success.

“This was the spirit of the 1,118 Foochows who came to Sibu one century ago under Wong Nai Siong. I hope this spirit will never be lost among the younger generation because it is a great asset,” he said when opening the eighth convention of the World Federation of Fuzhou Associations here yesterday.

TOKEN OF THANKS: Organising chairman Ling Beng Hui (left) presenting a souvenir to Taib during the World Federation of Fuzhou Associations convention in Kuching yesterday.

The community, he said, were resourceful, willing to face challenges and prepared to put in all their effort in order to succeed.

Moreover, the Foochows had learned to maintain values of charity and goodwill towards others, he said.

Taib said the Foochows’ active participation in business and trade served as an example for others in Asia to follow suit.

The federation’s president Datuk Seri Burhan Uray said Foochows were known to be hardworking, dedicated and result-oriented.

“I hope future generations of Foochows will continue to possess these qualities,” he said.

He added that the convention was an opportunity for Foochows around the world to make contacts and create strong networks among themselves.

Nearly 3,000 Foochows from 16 countries attended the three-day convention which began on Friday.

Tun Mahathir and Taib heap accolades on Ting Phek Khiing
    Saturday, January 12, 2008

KUCHING: Former Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad last night praised prominent developer Tan Sri Ting Phek Khiing for the latter’s ability to complete projects ahead of schedule.

He said a person like Ting, whom he described as a long time friend, was an asset to the country because he could build things fast.

Dr Mahathir said when he was the premier he had always wanted projects he approved to be completed fast or in time because, according to him, one could not know when would one’s authority last.

He said he could have been ousted from power “naturally or politically”, therefore, he counted on Ting to complete some of the major projects.

“I did not mind when people accused me of having Ting as my crony. All that mattered was that Ting could complete the projects ahead of time,” he said during Ting’s and his wife Puan Sri Dato Wong Sui Chuo’s 40th anniversary function last night.

Dr Mahathir said when Ting built a breakwater in Langkawi nobody predicted the tsunami disaster would hit the island. But Ting, he said, had already thought ahead of time, thus built the breakwater which eventually saved some lives when tsunami pounded Langkawi in Dec 2004.

Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud also praised Ting for his wonderful work.

Apart from saying that Ting is now famous for completing projects ahead of schedule, Taib also said that he is a kind person.

That kindness, according to the Chief Minister, is manifested in the fact that most of his employees stayed loyal to his flagship company Global Upline Sdn Bhd, or himself personally.

Ting should be a kind employer as he could keep 3,000 employees loyal to him, Taib insisted.

Ting, advisor to Global Upline is a role model for all to emulate because he has risen from a gardener’s son to a prominent businessman despite the fact that he did not have high education, Taib added.

It was a good thing that Ting is a true Sarawakian who opted to work in the State otherwise Sarawak could not have experienced some of its successes now, he added.

In his welcoming speech, Ting described Mahathir and Taib as long time friends and mentors who worked hard and smart. At the same function Taib and his wife Datuk Amar Laila also celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary which they marked by cutting a cake, while Ting and Wong cut their cake and exchanged anniversary rings to mark theirs.

Also present at the grand function held at Ting’s newly launched The Original Car Wash, were Head of State Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Mohammad Salahuddin and his wife Toh Puan Norkiah, Mahathir’s wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan and Federal Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Seri Aziz Shamsuddin. – Bernama

    Chinese biggest taxpayers: Dr M
Malays have to acknowledge that they contributed the least to making Malaysia a model country
    The Sun, Monday 27-03-2006

FORMER prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad does not mince his words when he says that if Malaysia depended only on taxes paid by the Malays, it would not have achieved what it has today, the Chinese press reported yesterday. He said Malays have to acknowledge that the Malay community contributed the least to making Malaysia a model country and to its current status in the world.

Addressing a forum on the Future Challenges of the Malays organised by the Kedah Malay Assembly Hall in Alor Star on Saturday, Mahathir said there is no doubt the country has progressed and prospered under the leadership of the Malays but that such progress was built on the hard work of other races.

“The government used taxes from the people to develop the country, but who contributed the most in taxes? “The Chinese! Their success in business has made them the biggest contributors in taxes.” He said Malays are behind the others not because they are inferior or lack resources but because of their culture and attitude. He urged them to stress on the pursuit of knowledge.

Mahathir also warned that the New Automotive Policy would be the undoing of Proton, which has suffered setbacks previously. “Proton is destined to fail,” he told reporters later when asked to comment on the policy announced last week. Asked to elaborate, he said: “What more is there to say?”

  3. Malaysia has neither transparency (non-corruption) nor real human rights, neither freedom of the media nor true democracy.
The blacks are only 14% of US population, if Obama can be US President, an Indian can be a Malaysian PM…think about it! How tragically you’ve been treated.

What has the ex-Malaysian PM got, to be proud of? Has he left a Malaysian legacy respected, successful and uncorrupted like his next door Singapore? True religion, humanity and morality have no room for plunder & racism. It’s only him glorifying himself, the World Community hasn’t a rice grain of respect for him. Lim Guan Eng is a million times more respected.

  4. I agree with the title but not the content

1st- if the chinese leave malaysia, racism in malaysia will decrease and UMNO will concentrate on development rather than racial politics (just give PAS kelantan to make PAS happy)

-Because Chinese are culturally racist but blame anyone racist for their insecurities
They take pride in their race but they say they are treated like a 2nd class citizen
they celebrate Chinese New Year( a race celebration, not sure if they celebrating the country or the people of China there??
Malay celebrate Hari raya (a religion celebration)
Indian celebrate Dewali (a hindu celebration)
even Caucasian don’t say it’s a White New Year
hence Chinese celebrate thier “race pride day”

    2nd-No Chinese, DAP is redundant
No DAP and the result will be peace and harmony for all.

DAP is a racist party that incite HATE
-Even for a fried chicken, chinese will lodge a complaint to DAP and incite racial hate … and soon, all internet chinese warriors will rallied behind their own kind
    blaming the malays.

    3rd- Natural resources
With less populations (chinese moved out), the rest of the populations will receive the profit sharing and benefits for all Malaysians. Everyone Happy…
    example, Brunei

4th- Babas and Nonya can stay because at least they integrate….
Where in the world you can find a country where pendatang refuse to integrate with the Natives and force the Natives to integrate to the pendatang lifestyle?
Sorry but we just couldn’t adapt or accept to coolies and labourers work ethics…
Sorry but when you can’t communicate OUR language should we make an effort to communicate in YOUR migrant language to integrate

    5th
the solution to lack of talents in malaysia
theres always Singapore Malays and Indonesians talents…
sorry guys (chinese) in the world of globalization 2020, i think your obsolete, thanks for the memory……

They know that they will the one benefit the whole revenue of the raw materials in Sarawak. They always blamed the Malays of Sarawak and people from The Malay States of Peninsular. Please go back to China………… or migrate to other countries. This article is really “bullshit article”….. stupid, stupid, stupid views go.. go.. go… to other countries…..

So stop lampooning and playing the UMNO racial card!

This article was written by a Malay intellectual in case you missed the author’s name.

  8. MALAYA IS ONE NATION ONE COUNTRY ONE PEOPLE

SABAH & SARAWAK ARE SEPARATE NATIONS, COUNTRIES & PEOPLES
    ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

The article appears to be written as satire but it raises a very important issue – that of national identity.

It was never in doubt that the federation of Malaya for independence in 1957 clearly included the Malayan people of all races faiths and colours. Malayans had a national identity.

Since the May 13 1969 UMNO incited massacre of non-Malays, UMNO has misused its powers to create an institutionalized Malay supremacist apartheid society which emphasizes Malay domination of the entire nation.

This new image is what UMNO has been trying to impose on non-Malayans who are discriminated against by re-labelling them as pendatangs.

And this has led to a very deep crisis over one’s national identity in Malaya and to some extent in the Sabah and Sarawak colonies.

It is therefore important for all of us to agree on what is the Malayan national identity which is confused with the “Malaysian” identity.

The claim that Malaysia is “one nation and one country” is based on a false claim.

Up till 1963 Malaya was one nation and one country. But in 1963 Britain gave UMNO control of the Sabah and Sarawak colonies under a new colonial creation called Malaysia.

Malaya swallowed up 2 separate countries with separate histories political and cultural backgrounds and geographically separate entities.

Since that time Malayans have called themselves “Malaysians”. They are free to call themselves under any names but the current use carry with it colonial implications when they also seek strenuously to impose this identity on the Sabah and Sarawak people.

From the time the British proposed the “Malaysia Plan” it was strongly resisted by the people here in various ways notably in nearly 30 years of armed resistance for independence. To this day independence is still a vibrant issue that keeps coming back in different forms.

The most vexatious is the looting of Sabah and Sarawak wealth especially oil and gas to develop Malaya leaving the 2 colonies impoverished. The people of these countries were misled into believing that “independence in Malaysia would bring them economic advancement”.

So they have come to disassociate themselves from anything to do with the UMNO colonialists.

Many Sabahans and Sarawakians definitely reject the idea of being “Malaysian”. They have no national identity crisis as they identify themselves as Sabahans and Sarawakians.

And may the day come soon when Sabah and Sarawak exit the colonial prison called “Malaysia”.

  9. The ambition of the present régime is the same as that of Nazi Germany, and its motto could be the same, too: Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Führer—that is: “One Race, One Rule, One Leader.” Of course, our home-grown fascists would add “One Religion.”

  10. Yes, let us all blame the Malays for everything. Let us blame the Malays eventhough most of them do not have the pleasure of having priviledge of the so ‘Ketuanan Melayu” like the richer one. Let us blame the Malays for what ever reason. We need to blame someone right, so why not the Malay? Let us hate the Malays for scholarship distribution eventhough 90% of the average Malays are using PTPTipu LOANs and bank loans for their children education. Let us denied also the bright average Malay students. They can not be so bright right? Malay are stupid what, they only know how to tanam padi and tangkap ikan. If they are so bright who are going to tanam padi for us all?

MALAYSIA = A Country where the Non Malays and Rich Malays blame Every Average/Poor Malays for being Malay and only want these poor Malays to become only Pak and Mak Petani/Nelayans! Well Done Malaysians!
