PM dismisses ‘multi-billionaire’ Taib claim

Nigel Aw

“There are all kinds of allegations, jangan kita layan (let’s not entertain it),” he said at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur this morning.Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has dismissed allegations that Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud had amassed billions of ringgit.

Najib was responding to a question on a report produced by Switzerland-based NGO Bruno Manser Fund (BMF) claiming that the chief minister, who has been in power for 31 years, has emerged as the country’s richest man with an estimated wealth of US$15 billion (RM46 billion).

It also estimated Taib’s total family wealth to be at a whopping US$21 billion (RM64 billion).

The report describes in detail the business activities and personal wealth of 20 members of the Taib family in Malaysia, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, United Kingdom, United States and other countries.

In a separate matter, the premier declined to weight in on the controversy that human rights group Suaram was receiving foreign funding.

“The CCM (Companies Commission Malaysia) is the authority on this matter, let them investigate,” he said curtly.

‘Suaram to be charged’

On Sept 18, Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Ismail Sabri Yaakob had said Suaram was being investigated by CCM for “confusing accounts” and that he expected the NGO to be chargedthis week.

Yesterday, Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia and Umno-linked New Straits Times and Berita Harian highlighted that Suaram and other groups were receiving foreign funding from international organisations.

Home Minister Hishammuddin had said that this could pose a threat to national security and the government was monitoring the funds.

  4. Meanwhile, Manyin keep on bluffing BN got NO MONEY for road projects…He He He…wonder where all the money gone…???

Sarawak has no money to build dual-carriageway trunk road
The Star, Sunday July 1, 2012

SIBU: The state government wants to build good roads that are on par with those in Peninsular Malaysia but it lacks money.

“It is the responsibility of the government to provide good infrastructure but we always lack of fund,” Infrastructure Development and Communications Minister Datuk Seri Michael Manyin said at the launch of JAC Light Commercial Truck Assembly Line here yesterday.

The RM10mil facility, which is located at KM13, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, is owned by NB Heavy Industries Sdn Bhd (NBHI).

It employs about 150 workers and has the capacity to assemble 6,000 trucks annually.

Manyin said he was aware of the many complaints and suggestions from various quarters regarding the upgrading of the state trunk road to a dual carriageway highway.

“Unfortunately to build a dual carriageway from Lundu to Miri would cost RM16bil,” the minister said .

He disclosed that his ministry had conducted studies on the roads in Peninsular Malaysia and found that most of the international standard roads there were toll roads.

Manyin said while it was not difficult to get takers for toll roads in Peninsular Malaysia, it was not easy to get the private sector to build them in Sarawak.

“Moreover the Government must provide an alternative as it cannot force people to use toll roads,” Manyin stressed .

He also said studies showed that a lot of accidents on our roads were caused by speedingon good, straight roads .

He disclosed that 1.2 persons died every day in road accidents in the state compared to about 19 persons in Peninsular Malaysia.

Manyin appealed to all road users to drive within the speed limit and always make sure that their vehicles were road-worthy at all times.

“We can’t afford to compromise road safety ,” he stressed.

  6. A sign the Barats specifically the UMNOs is in urgent need of election funds prior to the GE campaign; how to believe a PM bowing low to a CM. The regular trips to Kuching could be the progressive arrangement in the sealing of a top secret profile contract. Could one believe that Ismail is so intelligent to becoming the Malaysian 007 or is he merely the Number 7. Smart, tell us who is actually sourcing for funds then? How come we hear nil breaking news from MACC so far?

    First, change the government.

  7. People in truly transparent & democratic countries like UK, US, Canada, Aust & NZ see things too clearly. Malaysians have been fooled and deceived in the 40+ years before the internet, while BN, UMNO, PBB & cronies stole and plundered big times to the tune of RM$100-300billion. Scorpene, NFC, land grabs, CMS…are only what leaked out. Foreigners have no respect for these UMNO PBB leaders, in fact they are a big shame and disgrace to all of you. It is a great tragedy. Think how much are the people deprived of.

  8. Najib: “Even if our bodies are crushed and our lives lost, brothers and sisters, whatever happens, we must defend Putrajaya,” “I would like to stress here that I have never interfered in MACC’s operations. They are independent and free to carry out their investigations on anyone.” “You help me I help you.” Then likely to Musa, Taib, MACC, Shahzirat, Baginda: We saw nothing heard nothing.” Perhaps to the dynamite blasters: “Finish her off & shut her up”. “ Promises fulfilled.” Are these the thoughts and words of an honorable, ethical leader with the country’s interest at heart or someone bent on sabotaging opposition, human rights NGOs, on deceit, gangsterism & crimes? Answer it yourself.

  9. These crims should be tied to trees in the central city, be spat on, stripped naked, knifed, whipped and let the birds and flies finish them off. We’ve reached the brink. We call the biggest Curse from God on them. They have destroyed the lives of over a million Sarawakians. We will do all we can to put Taib, Taib’s families, Hamed Sepawie, Awang Tengah, Len Talip. James Masing, Alfred Jabu, Asfia, Stephen Rundl……..dozens of them in Jail. The PM too. Just wait and see. Twitter quote: ‘Mubarak cried and resisted leaving the helicopter that took him to prison.’ Let this, Gaddaffi & Saddam etc be a warning to others. Alan Newman, NZ.
