Global Withness’s Video expose on Taib links to drive PKR’s Sarawak campaign

MOHD FARHAN DARWIS AND EMILY DING

PKR will use the Global Witness video which allegedly showcases Tan Sri Taib Mahmud’s involvement in shady land deals as part of its electoral campaign in Sarawak to break the Barisan Nasional (BN) chief minister’s chokehold on Malaysia’s biggest state.

Sarawak PKR chief Baru Bian (picture)told The Malaysian Insider the party will translate the global environmental campaigner’s video expose into several local languages and copy them into compact discs (CDs) to distribute to longhouses statewide in a bid to reach the key indigenous voter group living deep within the jungle state’s interior.

“Starting from now, we will translate the subtitles of the video to Bahasa Malaysia and Bahasa Iban and download it to CDs and disseminate it to the whole of Sarawak.

“I believe that the distribution of this video in the kampungs will be effective. It’s a matter that has been talked about for several years before but a lot of people didn’t believe it, but now it’s out from the mouths of the family,” the lawyer told The Malaysian Insider.

Global Witness (GW), a UK-based organisation, released on Tuesday video proof of shady land deals in Sarawak that appeared to implicate the long-serving state’s chief minister and his family, with parts of the clip aired on the Al-Jazeera news channel.

In a covert investigation, GW captured on video dealings with Taib’s cousins and several other intermediaries to acquire thousands of hectares of forest land that the London-based activist said revealed the systematic corruption and illegality that lay at the heart of Sarawak.

In a 16-minute video clip titled “Inside Malaysia’s Shadow State”, GW investigators, who posed as foreign investors, recorded snippets of their conversation with Taib’s cousins and lawyers, to purchase the land for hefty profit and which the environmental campaigner said would displace thousands of indigenous people living there.

Baru also said he would lodge a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) about the allegations made in the video this afternoon.

He added that PKR divisions and non-governmental organisations in Sarawak would file similar complaints to the authorities in the state too.

In response to the allegations, Taib suggested that his cousins and others implicated in the GW video were promoting themselves to be his agents to solicit favours.

“OK I saw the so-called proof. Could it not be someone who tried to promote themselves to be an agent to get favours from me?

“It has nothing to do with me. I think it is a bit naughty of them. They are using their big powers to blacken my name,” he said when approached by reporters in the Sarawak’s state capital Kuching late on Tuesday.

His comments were subsequently uploaded onto YouTube.

Taib, 76, has been Sarawak chief minister for 32 years, having taken office in March 1981.

His personal wealth has stirred much controversy, with detractors alleging he gained much of it through dubious means.

  1. Are the evidences/primary facts reliable cogent and sufficient in order to implicate the persons indicted in the event they were to be arrainged and charged
in court. The evidences are sufficient to prove prima facie case upon which they are called to enter their defence. But despite these, were the makers of the
primary hard/real evidences be available to testify and tender it in court without which , it is just documentary inadmissible hearsay with no probative values.
Apart from these, will or could the MACC sharpen their teeth in order to prosecute the persons involved when dealing with these untouchable bastards. You are aware, there
are two-sets of criminal justice system being enforced in Malaysia: for the untounchable and the other for normal citizens like us. If you do not believe, just wait…
until thre cows come home, these alleged reports will be disappear thereafter. Moreover, though there were admissions that the transactions in such manners have been
conducted earlier, these evidneces will not be forthcoming. And from this video, the offences what soever had not been committed yet, only suffice to charge under conspiracy offence where
there is no requirement to prove the criminal conduct. See how they manipulate and blunder Sarawak resources as though Sarawak is only owned by their grand father. Come
on lads, my country men, you know what to do!!!!!

  2. Taib Mahmud is not just the thief minister of Sarawak who was given a free hand to manage the State resources as he likes so long as he can ensure Sarawak remains a fixed deposit for Umno which will help Umno dominates federal power but Taib Mahmud is also the main financier for Umno for the past 30 years (at the expense of all Sarawakians).

Najib’s younger brother, Nazim Tun Razak, marries Tun Rahman Yacub’s daughter, Norah Tun Rahman. Norah is not only the MP for Tanjung Manis but has also been given state lands by his cousin Taib Mahmud and is the chairman of Tanjung Manis Halal Hub which was established by the Sarawak State Government, with initially over 77,000 hectares of pristine agriculture land and is planned to be the largest integrated Halal hubs.

Tanjung Manis Food & Industrial Park Sdn Bhd which is headed by another of Tun Rahman Yacub’s daughter, Norlia, is the management company entrusted by the Sarawak state government to develop the Tanjung Manis Halal Hub. It is likely that out of the 77,000 hectares of pristine agriculture land with valuable timber, not more than 16,000 hectares will be utilised for the Halal Hub. CMS group of companies which is owned by the thief minister’s family will be awarded all project components in the entire Tanjung Manis region, cutting across Balingian in Mukah to Similajau in Bintulu. Taib Mahmud’s business crony, Hii Yii Peng, will be given the right to extract the timber and construct commercial and industrial buildings in this region.

Malaysians and especially Sarawakians need to know how extensive the corruption network of the thief minister of Sarawak with the tacit approval of Umno leadership for their mutual benefits. SCORE is the much larger network of corruption involving the thief minister, Taib Mahmud and Najib.

Only by changing the corrupted regime we can save Sarawak and Malaysia from total ruin and bankruptcy.

    • Taib, why must your cousins choose to be naughty and making use of your name to sell the state land you had given them. They had so much to loose by trying to frame you. So it is obvious the video recording was not planned and they and their lawyers were merely telling the truth, explaining the transaction mechanism and reassuring “global witness” who had disguised as potential buyer of the state land alienated to Norlia’s company that the mode of payment would not be dictated by both the Malaysian and Singapore authorities. MACC and Najib must act immediately.

  5. GLOBAL WITNESS DEFENDS SECRET VIDEO ON ALLEGED CORRUPTION

    http://malaysiandigest.com/news/36-local2/290032-global-witness-defends-secret-video-on-alleged-corruption.html

KUALA LUMPUR: As the nation braces for the 13th general election, the timing of the Global Witness (GW) video ‘Inside Malaysia’s Shadow State’ posted on YouTube on Monday has been questioned by various parties.

The Malay Mail(TMM) contacted GW’s campaigner Alex Halen regarding the video and the UK-based NGO’s intention. This was what they had to say:

TMM: How did your good organization come about to initiating the investigations and producing the video?

GW: Before we embarked on this project, GW already had strong evidence suggesting a high probability of corruption. It was our assessment we could not get this kind of evidence by overt investigations and that there was a clear public interest in filming these activities secretly. Our investigator formally approached the government agency tasked with receiving foreign investors (the Regional Corridor Development Authority) and was quickly forwarded to the cousins of Chief Minister (Tan Sri Abdul taibn Mahmud).

TMM: What do you hope to achieve through the video?

GW: The film presents serious evidence suggesting corruption and abuse of public office, as well as evidence surrounding tax evasion and skirting Malaysia’s company laws. Our aim is to expose this and provide renewed momentum for the government to crack down on corruption (which Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is publicly committed to).

TMM: Many question the timing of the video with the general election looming around the corner.

GW: This investigation is wholly and explicitly apolitical. We are not endorsing any particular party but highlighting grave issues of corruption at the heart of government in Sarawak. Whoever forms the next government needs to crack down hard on graft and undertake fundamental reform to stop this kind of abuse of public office, so that Malaysia’s people can see for themselves what decision are being made over its resource wealth.

TMM: What about possible legal action (by parties in the video) against your organisation?

GW: GW has taken all steps to ensure the legal veracity of the allegations. In addition to the extensive video evidence, we have the relevant documents provided by the parties featured in the video and have corroborated the links between the parties through other sources such as company register searches and media reports. We performed legal due diligence and asked all parties featured in the publication for comment before publishing, and incorporated a summary of their comments at the end of the video.

  6. SARAWAK BAR ACTION AGAINST 2 LAWYERS WHO REVEALLED BREACH OF LAW MATTERS TO GLOBAL WITNESS

KUCHING: The Advocates Association of Sarawak (AAS) will refer the alleged involvement of two senior lawyers in the abuse of logging license cases to the Inquiry Committee only after the facts have been established.

AAS president Khairil Azmie Mohd Hasbie said today the decisions on the two lawyers are expected to be known within 48 hours.

He said this after an emergency meeting of AAS executive committee today.

The meeting was called to discuss the alleged involvement of Alvin Chong Chee Vun and Huang Lung Ong as shown in the video released by Global Witness earlier.

Chong, among others, was heard in the video telling a representative from international non-governmental organization (NGO) Global Witness, who was posing as an interested investor, how to evade real property gain taxes.

Huang was heard trying to sell land for his uncle, Datuk Hii Yii Peng, a close business associate of Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

The video alleged abuse of logging licenses in Sarawak, implicating Taib, his close family members and business associates.

Meanwhile, AAS secretary Sarbjit Singh Khaira said members of the Inquiry Committee are appointed by Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Tan Sri Richard Malanjum.

“Today’s meeting of AAS executive committee decided the steps to be taken within the next 48 hours,” he said.

He said there are certain steps that needed to be taken before referring the matter to the Inquiry Committee.

He also said only the Inquiry Committee has the power to take action against errant lawyers under the Advocates Ordinance of Sarawak.
