Kudos to Sarawak Report

By Bunga Pakma

We Sarawakians, and all Malaysians, owe great gratitude towards the dedicated women and men of the site Sarawak Report. Sarawak Report made its first appearance on the net in January of this year, with a mere two posts. They were warming up. February’s six posts showed us that Sarawak Report was something new and exceptional. Then in June and this month they published four major articles founded on original research.  At last, through the efforts of these diligent journalists, Sarawakians and the world learned the extent and worth of Taib’s overseas property.

It is easy enough for a person like me to sit in front of a keyboard and compose “reflections”  on affairs. Every human being on earth has an opinion about something, most of us are eager enough to blab it to anyone we can grab, and thousands of bloggers in Malaysia alone produce every day a flood of pages.

Facts are what we think with, and facts are rare. As the philosopher Heraclitus said, “Those who seek gold dig much dirt and find little gold.” Without solid knowledge, words are just words.

I don’t know who is behind Sarawak Report. For obvious reasons, they wish to remain anonymous.  What SR behaves like is a well-structured, well-coördinated intelligence agency, or, if you’d prefer to avoid the taint of spy-metaphor, research team. This is exactly what we needed. Next to their contributions, I think my own very, very small potatoes indeed.

For decades, Sarawakians witnessed logging at a furious pace, and then the establishment of mega-plantations as oil-palm became “big” in the 90s. We guessed that an inconceivably immense area of forest was being destroyed. If nothing else, the thickness of the haze each August covering all Malaysia gave us an idea of the scale. Logs are salable. A big tree might be worth RM40,000. Millions of trees had been felled and trucked away. Yet none of us could see where the money was going.

Now we know where it went—at least RM2, 000,000,000 of it—thanks to the work of SR. Go see their reports. They have names, places, figures and documents. To find this out required of the SR team nothing more special than the will, patience and time. I can only speculate on who SR’s member might be, but it’s most probable that they are not a few, and that some of them live in the US, Britain, Australia and Canada.

Not everything is on the net. Most of the really good information remains in archives and libraries, and to use them, one has to be on the ground. That shouldn’t be a problem. There is a large Sarawakian diaspora in all these countries concerned for the welfare of all their relatives and friends at home and no friends at all of Taib. I also imagine that a number of these researchers—or, what the hell, agents—are familiar with the law and with business.

Thank you, ladies and gentlemen of Sarawak Report, for so generously contributing your time and expertise. You deserve well of Sarawak, and may you live to see yourselves honoured.

When the US Feds finally nailed Al Capone, they didn’t get him on murder, racketeering or extortion, they got him on tax-evasion. Capone had lied on his Internal revenue statement. Taib made a very stupid decision when he moved his plundered wealth overseas. In all four countries where SR has so far investigated, companies must publish their finances, their ownership, affiliations and financial status as matter of public record. International monetary transactions must be reported. All four countries also have Freedom of Information Acts on the books.

Here in Malaysia, bigshots can cover up, hinder, lie and intimidate as they please. Not so elsewhere. I have a feeling that the despotic control Taib exercises over absolutely everything in Sarawak, including information, led him to overreach himself. It was so easy for Taib to operate in the dark here that he got sloppy. There’s a great big paper trail abroad. Taib’s ill-gotten riches might as well be advertised in blazing neon, and who knows what else we are going to find? Given Taib’s naïve sloppiness and foolish conviction that he’s the only clever man in the state, I would bet that he has left a huge paper trail in Sarawak and the rest of Malaysia. I would imagine that Taib doesn’t know where it all is, and perhaps doesn’t have control of it all. Paper tends to wander. The day will come when the facts start to leak out, and then pour out, and I think we may hear about more than simple grand larceny.  We shall see.

  4. My thought… can someone out there organize a signatures drives aims at all Sarawak/Malaysian who agrees that the CM, families member both residing locally and abroad should to be investigated with the exposures of their assets abroad recently.

A memorandum to be submitted to the MACC in Kuala Lumpur or set up a Impendent Commission to investigate all the reports compiled by Sarawak Report.

    I guess J.Lo as well…..

  7. Who Is This Young Millionaire, Taek Jho Low?

Everyone’s taking notice of a rich guy who’s apparently trying to single-handedly save the nightlife industry and give leggy models everywhere something to do. His name is Taek Jho Low, a 20-something Wharton grad who loves Cristal.

Not much is known about the baby-faced Malaysian, but tales of his largess are swirling about and frequently as he has been dropping tens of thousands of dollars at hot spots around the city. Here’s what we know:

    Name: Take Jho Low
    Age: 28
Occupation: Officially he is an adviser to some international corporations, but no one knows what that means or seems to believe that is the truth. People say he’s involved in oil, gas, and construction. He and was appointed to the board of Malaysian bank UBG Berhad last year. It’s rumored that he’s an arms dealer.
Residence: Rents several apartments in the Park Imperial on West 57th St in midtown that house him and his staff—including several body guards. Famous neighbors include Daniel Craig and Sean Combs.
Motorcade: Travels about town with his entourage in a fleet of Escalades.
    Nightclub Spending:

    * Spent $160,000 in one night at Avenue this September during Fashion Week.
    * Routinely spends between $50,000 and $60,000 at Pink Elephant.
    * Bought Lindsay Lohan 23 bottles of Cristal at 1OAK when she was celebrating her 23rd birthday.

    Birthday Party:

    * Just celebrated his 28th year starting last Wednesday with a four-day bash at Ceasar’s Palace in Las Vegas.
    * Megan Fox was flown out to Vegas to hang out with the birthday boy, who routinely surrounds himself with models.
    * The hotel pool was surrounded by caged lions and tigers and filled with girls in bikinis. Later, at a nightclub, Low bought 120 bottles of Cristal for the revelers.
    * Jamie Foxx gave him a red sports car for a present.
    * Paris Hilton and Usher also attended the party.

  8. This is a simple human theory. U don’t need a rocket scientist 2 do an analysis. If all of us claim 2b S’wakians then it’s our responsibility 2 ensure it’s enough. Taib u got enough..n it’s enough 4u. u should show ur remorsed. What u’ve done is unforgiven for all S’wakians. If only ur non-iman better hanged urself or even jump into the river infront of ur mansion at Demak. Their ur Demak family graveyard is ready to accomodate u. what’s so special about that. All r the same. What make an human a different; only three things: The amal jariah, the soleh children and the sedakahtin. U may claim ur the para anbia. What ambia r u? The highest thievery ever heard of by most S’wakian who’ve survived.

If we’re going to do R&D for all BN representatives in S’wak be they DUN or MP members they all may fail the vetting. If do some may pass it’s just becoz we all know their family background. Can u believe an earning of RM10,000.00- RM20,000.00 a month u can build an astana costing millions of ringgit like the one we can see around Demak Heights n some other locations all over S’wak. There are all that can be seen with our own eyes. Very hard 2 believe, well these are all about BN leaders be it at state levels or federal level. This is morally right for BN. No questions should be asked. Cronies are the same. If Pakatan Rakyat take over the Federal Government, as YB Husam ensure PR can offer non-tax for 5 yrs coz we can restitution all properties and wealth owned by these BN representatives and return them to the rightful rakyat. May God Allah give us the strength to tople the BN government.

    • Yes it is the only way and it is created by this very BN. Once there we’ll be so difficult to cari. More so if we’re 6-feet under! 😉

We’ll need somebody to raise us from the dead. Maybe I’ll make a movie of this. You know someone comes along like Gandalf. Very romantic!

      Not to fear, if there’s a will, there’s a tunnel somewhere! 😀

  10. In 1968,larceny is replaced as a statutory crime in English law by theft.
White termite is the biggest sarawak land thief, timber logging thief. There is no other name to best describe him.
Worse still, sarawak stolen wealth is siphoned to foreign countries.

    Comment by Robin — July 18, 2010 @ 10:51 AM | Reply

    • Malaysia, how? Without a new government, new means PR, nothing stirs in Malaysia.

Perhaps, in Canada, Australia and the US larceny too is statutory.

Maybe UK or US penitentiary is more comfy? 😀

But employment is so high there not many will spurn such comfort! 😉

        I mean UNemployement ! 😀

  11. Yes another unsung hero. If we cannot fight this corrupt government openly, by all means go underground. What is important is the end result and that is to kick these blatant thieves, headed by the great white devil himself out. Kudos to the boys and gals of Sarawak Report. Your effort and courage will not be easily forgotten.
