PAGE hands over memo on English to PM

PAGE hands over memo on English to PM

The Parent Action Group for Education Malaysia (PAGE) delivered its memorandum on the language issue to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak here on Monday with the hope “he is listening to the people.”

“We want the memorandum to reach the hands of the PM before he leaves for Mecca for the Hajj.

“The PM says he is listening to the Rakyat, so I hope he listens to us,” Page chairperson Datin Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim told reporters after handing over the memorandum at the PM’s Office.

Around a dozen Page members accompanied Noor Azimah to hand over the memorandum to request that the government allow the option for the teaching of Science and Mathematics in English (PPSMI).

Noor Azimah added that she handed over graphs and figures showing the percentage of parents and students supporting PPSMI and exam results that warranted the continued use of English.

  1. Datin Noor Azimah, we salute you and your team for your determination and perseverance in promoting the PPSMI. Notwithstanding all the obstacles and the consistent rejections you and your team have had to face, from powerful forces, your keeping up the momentum has kept this issue alive. Without PAGE’s persistence, the subject would have been closed.

We are so happy to note that now the press and even political parties within the Barisan Nasional eg MCA and MIC keep issuing statements in support of the PPSMI or at least the right to choose. Perhaps PAGE could focus on explaining the issue to the other component parties of the BN to support the cause. Their voices may be heeded by the Education Minister.

Let’s hope the Authorities will reconsider the issue and prevent the standard of English in Malaysia deteriorating further.

Just to let you know, we, personally see no harm at all in your statement about how PAGE will vote and you have delivered the message, loud and clear. However as mentioned by the others who have commented here, perhaps PAGE should be cautious about linking votes at the GE to the issue.

  2. “Do not make us give the opposition our vote,” said PAGE chairman Datin Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim

Datin Noor Azimah has no right at all to issue a political statement on behalf of all its members and she must not lose sight of good governance in the present administration and mix education policy with votings and corruptions. Our children will lose everything in a corrupted system even if PPSMI will be retained.

  3. We commend the action of PAGE and at the same time we hope PAGE will not be trapped into promising to deliver votes for BN in exchange for the use of English as an option to teach Science and Mathematics.

  4. Unfortunately PAGE still do not realise that DPM (who is the Education minister) is more powerful than PM Najib.
