MACC keeps mum on Taib Mahmud graft probe

S Pathmawathy

Ironically, the officer – MACC investigation division deputy commission Azmi Mohd – did so at a forum organised by graft watchdog Transparency International-Malaysia (TI-M) to discuss corruption in forest management and sustainable development.A senior Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officer yesterday refused to comment on the status of its investigations into graft allegations against Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud.

Asked by Malaysiakini about the status of MACC’s investigation against Taib during the question-and-answer session of the public forum, Azmi appeared taken aback and said he had informed the forum organisers that he would not take questions that were “too detailed”.

“I told the organisers that I will not be answering certain questions, and these are questions I will not be able to answer,” he said.

NONEAzmi added he was not the “right person” to address the issue, but nodded when asked if Taib was still being investigated by MACC.

In June, MACC chief commissioner Abu Kassim Mohamed confirmed that the commission was digging into corruption allegations against the Sarawak chief minister, in particular involving logging concessions in the state.

No comment on fall in ranking as well

Azmi was also asked to comment on Malaysia’s progressive slide in the Transparency International’s corruption perception index (CPI).

This year, Malaysia is down four places to 60 out of 178 countries – its worst ranking in a decade.

Again, Azmi said he was not the “right person” to speak on the matter.

TI, which conducts the survey annually, attributed the decline to the government’s failure to tackle “grand corruption”.

Two days ago, international NGOs from six countries sent a letterto MACC, the Attorney-General’s Chamber and the inspector-general of police demanding that Taib and 13 of his family members be arrested.

The group, including the Bruno Manser Fund (BMF), Greenpeace and forest watch organisation Fern, in a 10-page letter listed out a litany of allegations involving misappropriation of public funds, abuse of public office, misappropriation of state land and fraud, among others, against Taib and his family.

According to BMF, Taib and his immediate family members have a stake in 332 Malaysian and 85 foreign companies, in all worth several billion US dollars.

The NGOs have also claimed that the known family stake in the net assets of 14 large Malaysian companies alone exceeds US$1.46 billion (RM4.65 billion).

  1. Quotes from Free Malaysia Today: “Mahathir has also been guilty on a national scale of hijacking the organs of state, doing away with the checks and balances inherent in the legislature, executive and judiciary, dipping his hands into the national cookie jar on behalf of his cronies and to fuel his politics of patronage and institutionalising racism in the country as a national ideology of the ruling elite.
The punishment must fit the crime. In Mahathir’s case, as with Taib, there is no punishment as yet devised for the enormity of their crimes against the state and people, even if they were to be re-born several times over to be punished all over again.”

IF MACC deserves its name – it should have all the facts by now and charge Taib and his entire gang before GE13 to show good faith to the people. May be this is the only away UMNO will win votes in Sarawak!

The question is whether it is expedient for UMNO to do take this move. You can never trust what they say.

UMNO wants Taib to secure seats in GE13 so will not kill off a friendly Taib and make more enemies in Sarawak. It is a different story if Taib turns against them.

We must never forget that Taib is a protégées of UMNO and had been instrumental in enabling UMNO to seize Sarawak oil and gas. after they engineered the “sacking” of CM Stephen Ningkan. Petronas and UMNO members have enriched themselves secretly beyond dreams. There are many UMNO Malay billionaires around because Sarawak oil made them rich. This alone is sufficient to protect Taib from any prosecutions. O course Taib is related to Najib by marriage.

More likely we will never get to see any real justice but it is better we unite and make an effort.

Even if we fail we can hold our heads up high and face the future generation with dignity. We can say we did not lie down and be stepped on.

The alternative is that PR wins majority seats and speeds up the investigations as the new government.

But PR has made any promises to act against corruption. However outside this book it does not appear to have talked about prosecuting the Taib and gang. Baru Bian may have in his capacity as a lawyer.

BTW The “autonomy” carrot held out in their Buku Jingga manifesto is not real “autonomy” – reproduced below

Sabah and Sarawak as Equal Partners

Respecting the position of Sabah and Sarawak as equal partners in the
Malaysian Federation, and honouring previous agreements made, Pakatan
    Rakyat pledges to:

 Restore autonomy to Sabah and Sarawak in line with and within the
framework of the Federal Constitution and the Federation Agreement.

 Raise the royalties paid on petroleum and hydrocarbon resources to
Sabah and Sarawak to 20% from the present 5%.

 Set up a Royal Commission to solve the perennial problem of illegal
    immigration and citizenship in Sabah.

 Help bring the level of infrastructural development in Sabah and Sarawak
up to par with other states of the Federation.

 Increase national integration between Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular
Malaysia through a fair power-sharing arrangement that fully upholds
    the spirit of the Federation.

If you have read the above closely- what they promise for Sabah and Sarawak is “NATIONAL INTEGRATION” into the Malayan political system…NOT AUTONOMY. PR acknowledges that we were CHEATED and offered some consolation prizes in its manifesto. They know the Sabah/Sarawak people are questioning the value of continuing in Malaysia or get out.

Their agenda is more sinister! They are sealing the con job began in 1963 to lure us into agreeing to “form Malaysia”. This is to counter the general move in Sabah and Sarawak to get out of Malaysia and get real independence.

Further, the promise of 20% of oil revenues is just not good enough. We should get back 100% control of our resources! UMNO and Petronas have already stolen and enrich themselves with untold billions from our oil and gas.

    SO can we trust PR??

Investigation into seized assets of Hosni Mubarak and Zine el Abidine Ben Ali begins

An investigation to seize vast assets of deposed strongmen Hosni Mubarak of Egypt and Zine el Abidine Ben Ali of Tunisia has been launched in Europe and North America, a Eurojust spokesman said Thursday.

Joannes Thuy, a EuroJust spokesman said the investigation started after a meeting on Monday and Tuesday between Eurojust, the European Union’s justice co-ordination body, and Tunisian and Egyptian authorities in The Hague, where Eurojust is based.

“Both Tunisia and Egypt explained the ex-presidents illegally transferred a lot of money out of their countries and invested in bank accounts and property all over Europe, even Canada and the United States,” Thuy said.

“They asked us to coordinate the investigation, which we are now facilitating and have put them in touch with various prosecutors in different countries,” he added.

“Following a joint decision, a Europe-wide financial investigation was launched to identify assets, freeze bank accounts and confiscate money and properties,” Eurojust added in a press release.
Mr Thuy could not say whether any assets have yet been recovered but added it was believed to be running “into millions and millions” of euros.

Swiss lawyer seeks freeze on any Ben Ali assets 18 Jan 2011

Mubarak is currently facing a murder trial before an Egyptian court and may get the death sentence if found complicit in the killings of some 850 people who died during 18 days of protest that ousted him from power in February.

Ben Ali and his wife were forced into exile in Saudi Arabia earlier during the “Arab Spring” revolt when he was overthrown in an unprecedented popular uprising.

But earlier this month, liquidators of Ben Ali’s vast business empire threatened to quit en masse over security concerns, the official TAP news agency reported from Tunis.

Some 200-odd liquidators tasked with managing a myriad of firms owned by Ben Ali and his entourage said they would walk out be year’s end if attacks, both verbally and physically, did not stop.

  7. The whole system of democracy, human rights and morality has gone to the dogs. Even Mahathir came up ‘in favour’ of Taib a day ago! Not really surprising as Mathathir’s Son has been a director of 200 companies; he mentored ethnocracy, nepotism, corruption, mega projects and the likes of Ting Pek Kiing, Eric Chia…. It’s all sickening & disgraceful. The international community has lost respect for these people altogether. Alan Newman, NZ

  11. MACC, PDRM, AG and even Bank Negara Governor are all corrupted to the core. BNM governor’s husband was given few hundred million worth of project in Sabah not so long ago. There is no way MACC will probe Taib Mahmud and or other UMNO ministers when MACC, PDRM and the AG are all corrupted to the core. God have mercy.

  12. If Taib is charged for corruption then 99% of the BN ministers and ex-ministers like Mahathir and Badawi will also have to face the same charges. Like Mahathir stated in recent days, this is only an election ploy by the opposition. There’s no corruption in Malaysia.

  14. Friends. After a post cabinet meeting yesterday 16/Dec/2011, an insider has leaked news that a special committee meeting to investigate Taib would be held end of this month. 3 state departments were mentioned. Issues would be around tenders and contract, land, mulu tourism company, japanese allegation of abuse etc etc. Further earlier request for SFS to step down was shelved indefinitely as SFS would have to respond to the investigation committee. So Housing GM will remain until light is given for him to take over the SFS position. Lets wait for the news on Taib’s scandal
