Malaysia in 2020: A maid exporter, bankrupt and police state?

Kenny Gan

THIS COULD HAPPEN Aminah wiped the sweat from her brow as she crossed the busy road to the rundown bus station in the hot afternoon sun. She had just bought a few packets of nasi lemak for herself and her children for lunch; the cheapest type of empty rice with a pinch of sambal. No chicken, no cuttlefish, not even a piece of cucumber. It was all they could afford these days. “If I as a graduate teacher finds the cost of living so tough, what about the less educated ones?” she thought grimly. She remembered the days when teachers could drive their own cars as she clambered onboard the rickety bus spewing foul black smoke. It seemed like a distant dream in a faraway time but yet in reality not so long ago, she thought.

In a noisy coffee shop near his office Chin finished his plate of chicken rice washed down with plain water he brought from home. Actually it should be called “cucumber rice,” he thought as he ate it with chilly and cucumber but omitted ordering any chicken to save money. He had just started working as a graduate engineer with a salary of RM2000 a month and a bond of 2 years. His father had looked resigned when he told him the news. He had merely remarked that 30 years ago he had started working as a fresh graduate with exactly the same salary and even then it was already hard going.

As Siti walked pass the huge poster recruiting Malaysian maids for Indonesia she wondered what went wrong. “We voted for BN, we believed their promises of high income but now we can barely survive with the stagnant income and ever increasing cost of living, she thought bitterly. Toll, petrol, diesel, electricity and water rates keep increasing and GST will soon be increased from 10% to 15%. On top of that there are EPF, tax, and healthcare deductions on her monthly salary making her meagre pay as a bank officer even more meagre. “This government is no longer afraid of losing elections,” she thought.

A Maid Exporting Country

It is the year 2020 and Tun Mahathir had just flagged off the first batch of Malaysian maids for Indonesia. There is no lack of eager women willing to take on domestic drudgery in a foreign land to escape the poverty in rural Malaysia. Reports of maids horrifically abused in Jakarta did not faze them. They are able to earn twice what a teacher earns and save most of it. Indonesia had progressed fast in the last decade and outstripped Malaysia in economic performance and income while Malaysia went backwards.

The year 2012 was a pivotal year. In the general election of that year the dominant political party BN was challenged for the seat of government by a united opposition called Pakatan Rakyat. It was a grossly unlevel playing field as always but that election represented the only time when there was a chance to unseat BN which had ruled the country since independence. As fate would have it this did not come to pass. BN still won the election, helped no doubt by the built-in gerrymandering advantages and a fair dollop of good old fashioned cheating. PR had support but not enough to overcome the unlevel playing field and the cheating.

After their victory BN sought to make sure that its power will never be threatened again. A vile propaganda campaign against PR was unleashed accusing them of everything under the sun from traitors to saboteurs. Opposition leaders were harassed with all sorts of frivolous charges, some were imprisoned and elected lawmakers enticed to hop to BN with wheelbarrows of money. BN sponsored thugs broke up opposition meetings as police looked the other way. In the end the parties forming PR broke up under extreme pressure and went their separate ways. For extra insurance an opaque biometric system of registering and vetting voters was implemented to make cheating easier.

Decline and Degeneration

Now that BN had neutralized any threats to its power all principles of good governance were thrown out of the window. Corruption scandals erupted which made the NFC RM250 million scandal of a decade ago looked like pilfering pocket money. Cronies were awarded sweetheart deals for infrastructure works which guaranteed them huge profits at no risk with the costs passed to the people.

When the government ran short of money subsidies were withdrawn, taxes raised and new taxes devised. Toll, electricity, water, telephone and internet services went up like clockwork while petrol and diesel were taxed instead of subsidized. The economy faltered and unemployment shot up. EPF money was plundered until it could no longer pay a lump sum to retirees but only a fixed allowance a month in the guise of “safeguarding retirement funds.”

Life became harder for the ordinary people while a small band of ruling party elite became super-rich. The ringgit depreciated causing inflation to poke at people’s lives like sharp thorns. What was amazing was the dizzying pace of decline. It had taken less than a decade for the middle class to be decimated and impoverished. People could still remember when they could afford to go for holidays and eat satisfying restaurant meals.

In the face of growing dissent draconian laws were bulldozed through parliament and enforced by paramilitary units. A large secret police spied on the people and terrorized dissidents. Malaysia would soon be known as the Zimbabwe of the East.

An Opportunity Lost

Those who could packed up and left, those who couldn’t stay behind to wonder at what sort of government they had elected. Actually to say that they had elected BN is unfair as choice had been effectively removed from voters. The system had been manipulated and corrupted until it is practically impossible for BN to lose. The ruling party had seen to that.

There was a time back in the 13th general election of 2012 when removing BN was still possible; difficult but possible. If only the people hadn’t been so taken in with the distribution of election goodies, if only they had rejected the racial poison disseminated by BN, if only the Indians had voted with the Chinese to reject BN instead of being led astray by false leaders, if only the rural Malays had seen through Umno’s lies, if only the overseas Malaysians had come back and voted, if only…if only….

Yet, there were fence sitters who refused to support PR saying they were not good enough. They criticized PR as being quarrelsome and inexperienced despite the huge corruption scandals and abuses of BN. They demanded that the opposition be perfect before giving their votes. They wanted good governance but they were not prepared to take the risk.

If BN had lost power once, just once, we would have created a two party system. BN would be forced to reform itself outside the corridors of power and the people would have a choice. Both coalitions would have to compete for the people’s votes and be more accountable in governing. There would be real democracy instead of a pseudo-democracy where the ruling party has no fear of losing power.

But it is too late. The chance had come and gone. In 2020 when we were supposed to be a developed nation we became a maid exporting country instead. Malaysians can only look wishfully back to the past and forward to an uncertain future with resignation.

    • What!? You you didn’t see any Indian name? Daud Abdul Rahman by any other name would still sell Sarawakians as maids. The Paki, Mahathir by any other name is stil sell all the Malays. He can’t sell many Pakis in Malaya because they’re in Pakistan bombing Ben Laden’s house for Yankee money. Mong by whatever name will dagang and jual the Dayak.

If you go to Sunday Satok Market nobody sell people but just food and stuffs at good prices. Of course you might want to go to Spring and Bulipat and see the Foochows sell pricy stuffs after Taib sold Jabu and and everyone.

Najib don’t sell people. He sell bonds. He just sold RM8 billions of bonds. Maybe very halal, too! These Sukuk bonds are so halal, UMNO used it to clean public Selangor Water supply, no filter needed. And our Bank Negara Gabenor is selling Saudi bonds, very clean, from the Holy Land. They could be used a little to buy Yankee war planes from Obama. They dagang and jual a lot of Arabs there. When they want some fun, they just shoot the poor Arab butts and make them dance and shout.

Even Scotland is having a referendum for independence. The Irish fought the British for many hundred years to gain their freedom and independence from British colonial domination.

No one today call all these “wishful thinking”.

  8. CONTINUE WITH YOUR SLAVISH COLONIZED MENTALITY OF WANTING TO REMAIN IN NEO-COLONIAL MALAYSIA!

The projected 2020 Malaysia is to a large extent very much the political reality now imposed on us on top of our status as colonies of Malaya.

UMNO BN and its local proxy PBB BN hangs on to power today and will tomorrow because there are many Sarawakians out there who continued to delude themselves that they have “independence” and Sarawak is an inseparably part of neo-colonial Malaysia.

This depressing fatalistic outlook is lacking in any fighting spirit which we constantly remind ourselves we have in the past but fail to live up to.

Historically and geographically we were never a part of Malaya not in the last 5,000 years ever! We were an independent state from 1842 to 1946.

So how is it we have so easily give up this independence and submitted ourselves to be colonized by the new brown skinned foreign UMNO Malay supremacist masters from Kuala Lumpur for the last 50 years?

Those who see salvation in Malaysia are those who have mentally surrendered our precious independence.

This mental enslavement to the British colonial devised idea to hand over colonial power to UMNO in 1963 has persisted in part because people cannot see beyond the Sarawak shores that we are being ruled by just another foreign government after the British hastily dumped Sabah and Sarawak into the hands of Malaya.

It is a pity when even ulu villagers can see that since 1963 their socio economic life has remained stagnant if not regressed to a more depressed state.

Since that watershed year the ordinary people have borne the brunt of neo-colonial Malaysia economic invasions of their ancestral land and rivers. The Penans have been resisting and blockading the invasion of timber companies backed by the PBB and UMNO BN government. These are all attacks on the people’s rights made possible because the PBB BN government is a government of UMNO.

Before we can go further to regain the independence we have lost since 1942 with Japanese British and Malayan colonial rule, we have the opportunity to unite with Malayans to rid ourselves of the parasites in power.

In the coming elections we have a slim 57 seats chance to help take state power out of the hands of those fascists who oppress us. Let us have the pleasure of doing this.

If we succeed we can go the next step to break free from the colonial chains of Malaya. Do not be sidetracked with the autonomy issue when full national independence is our goal.

Then it is Sabah Sarawak Keluar Malaysia (SSKM)!

    • The DAP proposed RM1billion Trust Fund for the rural poor in Sarawak was not far fetched. It is not a burden to the government when the country is well managed. The socio economic development in most parts of Sarawak and Sabah are 40 years behind. In Indonesia, the agriculture policies and SME had benefited the rural population significantly. Malaysia has been screwed by the BN government dominated by the most corrupted political party in the world, UMNO. In the case of Sarawak, we are screwed by the thief minister, Taib Mahmud.

Enough is Enough. Vote out BN totally!

      Comment by Bidayuh Headmaster — March 9, 2012 @ 9:39 AM | Reply

      • DAP PROPOSAL IS A BIT ODD

The rural poor deserve to get the development they were promised by UMNO but failed to get with “independence in Malaysia” since 1963.

UMNO failed totally to keep its side of the bargain but abused the trust the people who enticed and compelled to place their faith and trust in its hand when the British handed colonial powers to Malaya in the process of denying us real independence.

However, one would question why we need such a “trust fund”.

All the money derived from Sarawak resources are in a sense trust money which a responsible and transparent government of the day hold in trust to be spent wisely for its citizens.

What we have is that under the name of development UMNO breached our trust and stole our oil and gas in the region of $50 trillions and billions by its local support PBB BN gangsters and land thieves after over 40 years.

If an honest government could be elected there is no need for a trust fund. All it needs to do is to honestly implement the development plans for the people’s benefit.

The first thing such a government should do is to embark on a Sarawak wide provision of aid relief to the desperately poor and to freeze price rise of essential goods and necessities for a period.

          • WHY BE SO ANTI-DAYAK? THEY ARE THE PEOPLE WHO WILL EVENTUALLY RISE UP TO TAKE BACK OUR MOTHERLAND SARAWAK FOR INDEPENDENCE

Nevertheless aside from mocking the poor victimized Dayaks and all other tribal people there is a good question raised here: What must be done and how is it to be done?

Of course a good government should budget and spend wisely. Currently there is widespread rural poverty which in part existed since 1963 and made worse by the UMNO PBB BN joint colonial plunder of our country.

Here is a broad outline of the plan for change for general discussion and consideration.

This plan is achievable if we have a strong responsible and patriotic Sarawakian political leadership to lead the people not Malayan parties.

CHANGE COMES WITH SARAWAK NATIONAL LIBERATION & INDEPENDENCE FIRST

The first and foremost national task for change that MUST be achieved is to take back our country with the national liberation of Sarawak from UMNO colonial rule and regain our independence we lost since 1942 to Japan, Britain and Malaya.

The fight for Sarawak independence is a legacy left to us by those who have fought with great sacrifices and yet to be finally accomplished.

How this is to be done? A liberation struggle can be peaceful or otherwise. It is a decision for the Sarawak people to make.

National liberation and independence will be followed by a long period of re-construction with a programme that will make Sarawak and its people a strong self-reliant economy and independent country in contrast to the current corrupt and inefficient system.

The newly independent Sarawak government needs to quickly take back all retrievable assets and wealth stolen by UMNO PBB BN families and members, their cronies and all the timber tycoons/timber barons who have looted Sarawak since 1963.

A government of national reconciliation will be formed to include all patriotic people and organizations genuinely wishing to co-operate to re-build the economy and raise the people’s standard of living and repair and renew our much damaged environment and land.

As a first step we have to take back our stolen national assets from the thieves. If they do not co-operate to return the wealth, these criminals will be charged and tried for their betrayal of the people’s trust, grand corruption and theft of national wealth with appropriate punishments.

The trillions of dollars that could be re-covered will in part be used to support a national programme of providing economic relief for the poor in an organised way.

One of the priorities for a self-sufficient economy is to return control of the land to those original NCR owners to enable them to grow food not just for themselves but for our country. This is part of the plan to reduce the need for imported basic necessities and supported with financial relief, programmes to equip farmers with advance agricultural practices and technical education.

A firm self-reliant agricultural base will be the foundation of a new independent Sarawak. The manufacturing and processing industries will be adjusted to the needs of the country. The prices of goods will be fixed for a period to allow the country’s economy to stabilise and alleviate the burden on the poor.

Where it is not possible to reinstate their land and titles NCR families should be properly compensated out of the profits of the project now in operation and paid retrospectively from the date their land was stolen and for all the pain and sufferings.

The other things to be done is to re-generate our forests and clean up the rivers, convert appropriate oil palm plantations to rice fields and grow other crops to enable self sufficiency in staple foods.

We need to programme for a greener environment with conservation of our petroleum resources, stop dam buildings and increase the use of solar power and alternative forms of energy

The public infrastructures including civil services and education system will all have to be re-vamped or re-built.

A new national army will be formed. It will be expected that the existing Dayak forces who assisted in the independence struggle will be become part of the national defence force together with those who fought to liberate Sarawak.

This is a possibility that lies in the hands of a determined national leadership who will lead the fight to free ourselves from Malayan colonial rule.

In the final analysis, the people must decide which road they wish to take (1) endure anther 50 years of criminal plunder and colonial domination (2) taking the more glorious road of fighting for a free independent and democratic country Sarawak.

What have you got to lose? We already lost our freedom and independence and control of our country to Malayan colonial rule. There is only more to gain by taking back our country than not doing anything.

Ask what you can do for your country.

Nobody can ever be so ANTI-DAYAK as Taib together with Masing, Jabu and the Legendary Mong Dagang. They are very heavy people with so much iron in their system. You do tend to get a sense of ‘irony’. 😉

When you get into the nitty gritty of reforms any bunch of good managers fairly decently organized could deliver. It’s a given, provided there is governance. accountability and transparency. In this case, if Mong had not stuck his fingers in, those civil servants would have done their jobs properly and gave the OKU what’s due to him. That’s rakyat money for the rakyat.

The Dayaks are important as everyone else of any ethnic origin is. At the moment they are important to the BN. But they didn’t give their votes “willingly” as in “free and fair elections”. The BN did the vicious unethical act on the OKU who is a Dayak.

Firstly and most importantly, we must kick out UMNO controlled BN government in GE13 and not after. Then the Pakatan government will have to implement a series of proactive policies to unite the people, deduce deficits, increase productivity across all strata of society, revamp and separate executive from legislature. and give priority to rural developments especially in marginalsed states, Sarawak and Sabah.

;if Pakatan becomes as bad as BN. PR is quite like BN in many ways and has not even granted :

            2) Freedom from Religious-Persecution/Religious-Supremacy.
            3) Equality for all ethnicities and faiths in all aspects of policy, Law and Constitution.

Yet, though Pakatan has merely ‘alluded’ to the above 3 items more than BN has. This could mean that 3rd Force is the only way forward to an equal citizen.

      • MACC can be made good. It has some hantus. So we need some Dukun, with blond hair, best from Lebanon.

Let her exorcise all the hantus from the MACC Chief and his men with the best belly dance. After that MACC will be OK.

Otherwise, the hantus will enter witnesses and make them jump out of MACC windows.

But no problem. The Lebanon Dukun with blond hair will fight the hantus! 😆
