Sarawak defying court on NCR, says PKR

Joseph Tawie

Baru Bian denounces the government for restricting the definition of native customary rights land.

Sarawak PKR leader Baru Bian has denounced the state government for its refusal to recognise “pulau galau” (communal forest) and “pemakai menua” (territorial domain) as native customary rights land (NCR), saying it cheats tens of thousands of landowners of their rights.

“Pulau gawau” translates as “communal forests” and “pemakai menua” as “territorial domains”.

Last Friday, the Assistant Minister of Entrepreneur Development, Naroden Majais, told the state assembly that these were not recognised as NCR land unless they were located in areas already defined as such land.

Bian said Pakatan Rakyat would use the issue as a major campaign point for the coming general election.

He said Naroden’s statement meant that the state government did not recognise the decision of the High Court, the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court in NCR land cases.

He said at least two court decisions had confirmed that pemakai menua and pulau galau were NCR land.

“We will communicate with the people through Radio Free Sarawak, through the papers and social media to tell them that the government does not recognise the decision of the court,” he said.

“The only way out for us is to change the government.”

  3. The chinese initially do not have lands but given by the grace of taib as barter trade for supports during election , malay and the melay-now used to have plenty but depleting, sold for airfare to mecca [ religious obligation which is good] and whats left are Natives NCR lands which taib will refuse to recognize due to his determination to subdue and dominate the Natives Dayak in commerce, politics and educations. He is not a supporter of native struggle to improve through education, politics and commerce. To him, Natives must be made to remain poor lest they be too smart and outsmart him. The only way to do that is deny natives ownership of their own land and build damned dams to flood the rest and again to deny natives of the use of those lands which are mostly Pulau galau and pemakai menua anyway. And Masing plus his supporters are of course happy when that happened, only for the money they can make.

  4. Yes, vote out those YBs who failed to uphold the ‘Rakyat’s Rights’. When coming to election time, don’t ever be swayed by ‘sweet-talking’ politician or by established party’s brand/name; instead, we should look and vote for a ‘positive-action’ oriented politician.
