BN’s Baram Crisis !

Sarawak Report

Tamper with our river at your peril Taib! – Demonstrators against the dam during last weeks ‘Baram Wave’

At the last Federal Election Taib did not bother to visit Baram.

To him it was just a source of timber which he could exploit, handing vast logging concessions to his crony companies like Samling and to politicians he needed to control, while leaving the people destitute.

One such politician was Jacob Sagan, the local MP and Federal Deputy Trade & Industry Minister.

Jacob has been Taib’s obedient henchman representing the Baram seat for three elections under SPDP and he has proved willing to betray his people to serve his master on every occasion.

Sagan has even been willing to put his support behind Taib’s greatest insult so far to the people of Baram, his announcement of the Baram Dam!

Greedy couple – in return for their loyalty to Taib against the interests of their own people Sagan and his wife Winnie have raked in belian concessions and construction contracts worth hundreds of millions

However, just as Sagan was singing the praises of this dreadful plan, which will wash away countless homes and villages, including the place he was born, Sarawak Report exposed his rich rewards from the Chief Minister.

We revealed last year how the treacherous MP has secretly received millions of ringgit of valuable belian concessions taken right from within his own region.

Not only that, a construction company called Dema Tega, owned by him, his wife, and his sister-in-law has further received over RM60million in state contracts!

Yet, while the Sagan family has got mega-rich, his abandoned constituents have been left to fend for themselves against plans to flood and destroy their ancient homelands and ruin yet more of the rainforest.

Little surprise that they are turning in droves to the opposition PKR politicians like Roland Engan, whose party has promised to put an immediate stop to Sarawak’s dam project.

Winjac Sdn Bhd and Milisha Sdn Bhd – owned by Sagan, his wife Winnie Jolly and their daughter

Sagan has tried denying the corruption behind his failure to protect his people from SCORE, however even the Baram River could not wash away the evidence of his guilt.

The couple’s companies Winjac and Milisha Sdn Bhd are clearly recorded as the recipients of these belian concessions by leaked Forest Department maps (which should be public information).  Hundreds of hectares of this endangered hardwood species have gone to this greedy MP in the name of himself, his wife and his daughter.

Baram Wave

Outside a poor home near Bakun – What is the point of having a dam built across your river when you can’t even benefit from the electricity?

The result has been a huge rumbling of discontent across the region, as the people’s seemingly endless patience over the abuse and plunder of their lands has finally run out.

The revolt has rippled through all the different communities along the banks of the Baram. For years the Chief Minister had succeeded in controlling and dividing them, but the Dam has turned them into one united movement against BN.

Campaigners like Save Sarawak Rivershave collected major petitions and mounted public protests and the changing tide of political support has been termed the ‘Baram Wave’.

At first Sagan, his party boss William Mawan and Taib thought they could ignore the anger, especially after they decided to delay Baram until safely after the coming federal election.  But, the protests have continued and it seems suddenly Sagan and Taib have realised they are in political danger.

Petitions – for the first time local people have dared speak out against BN and to talk about supporting a new government – they do it every day on Radio Free Sarawak!

PKR, Engan and local NGOs like Save Rivers have campaigned tirelessly against the dam for months and it has become clear that the people of Baram do not believe BN’s promises for SCORE, but are rather putting their trust in the opposition promise to cancel the whole project!

Last week’s Baram Wave demonstration saw a growing flotilla of over 40 boats descending the river, flying flags for the opposition!

Baram Wave flotilla – the local people have seen a solution in the opposition’s pledge to cancel the dam!

Evidence, if it was needed, is heard every day on the only free media in Sarawak, Radio Free Sarawak (RFS on shortwave) where ordinary folk, as well as head men and prominent figures, have felt brave enough to say “Boo!” to  Taib Mahmud and his yes man Jacob Sagan and their plans to flood the Baram region.

No longer any fear in Baram about demonstrating support for opposition parties

Taib to alight from his helicopter!

So, now we hear that Taib Mahmud, Chief Minister of Sarawak, has made a momentus decision.

PKR flags are a common sight on the Baram River – too late for Taib to pretend he is cancelling the dam?

Realising that he has miscalculated horribly and is facing a complete crisis in Baram, he has announced that he will drag himself into one of his helicopters and take himself up to Baram after all these years, in order (he hopes) to rescue this dreadful situation.

The date of the seafarer’s arrival is scheduled for 23rd February.

Might we suggest that it is far too late to woo the river people and also that the old dictator is far too arrogant to commit himself to the one thing which will satisfy them, which is the cancelling of his grand plans?

Yet it is clear that Taib thinks that by at last deigning to visit Baram his great presence will solve all problems.  He has told himself that he can convince local listeners that he is their caring leader after all.  But, the truth is they know that he is only coming because he is desperate.

“What will he do?”, asked one villager last week.  ”Will he make promises or just offer money?  Or will he pretend to cancel the dam altogether, because we know he will take his revenge after the election and enforce it anyway!”

Stinking sludge has clogged the Balui river owing to the Bakun Dam, forcing the evacuation of workers

Taib’s biggest problem is that the Baram people now have examples of how the Chief Minister has treated other communities affected by dams.

The people in Batang Ai have yet to receive proper compensation 30 years on, let alone the people of Bakun, who have been stranded in Sungai Asap’s refugee camp for over a decade.

And what about the environmental consequences of having a fruitful river turned into a blocked up drain?

The community of the Balui River tributary of the Baram Basin have had their own experience of the Bakun disaster.

Last week sludge from Bakun’s now stinking lake backed up into their own waters and the smell and pollution was so terrible they had to evacuate the area.

Informing the local people – NGOs have been in action for months in Baram, but it is only now that Taib is bothering to come!

Scientists say that the smell of Bakun could continue for a century (meaning for as long as the dam is functioning).  This pollution has already long since killed the fish and animals of the river.

And all this because Taib Mahmud is under the impression that he could make himself richer by damming up Sarawak’s rivers and building even more factories owned by his family.

It is not only a disaster for the world environment, but it is a disaster for the local people and the people of Baram do not want it repeated in their region.

So, what kind of a welcome do we think Taib Mahmud will get in Baram on February 23rd if he ever dares make that visit and how many police will he send into the area first?

Taib certainly has a crisis on his hands in Baram, but it seems he does not understand the half of it.

[Malaysia’s opposition leader PKR’s Anwar Ibrahim will be visiting Baram again on February 11th in the company of PKR Sarawak Chief, Baru Bian – for details consult this site].

  2. A search on DD Plantation Sdn Bhd will show Dr Jerip Susil is a director of the company’s plantation in Simunjan. Jacob Sagan, Dr Rundi, Peter Nansian, Sylvester Entri, Rosey, Michael Mangin, Robert Chuat, James Masing, William Mawan are all the Dayak crooks after the infamous chief Dayak crook, Alfred Jabu.

Stupid dayaks being paid RM30 each and he/she voted for BN but behind their back the Thief Minister and cronies robbed their life-giving land and their clean environment and now they have no land to plant and hunt and the polluted air and rivers cause illness and sufferings. 5. All the people of Sarawak are to be blamed for the development of vile corruptions in the state and frivolous lies
by the said CM all these years. The natives who had used to be angry and cursed the CM, yet when the
election comes, vote convincingly to ensure BN will win. Why??? So this time around, please beat and hit the snake.

    • Agree 120% to your statements!

The dayaks would claim that they were headhunters before yet taib and his henchmen trample all over their lands and rights!

The org ulus are claimed to be able to put to “sleep” their enemies with the poisonous blowpipes, yet the jungles are encroached at an alarming rate!

When the time for sarawakians to vote, they would give excuses like “my kids work for the government, i do not want them to lose their jobs” or “i work for the government or my company works for a government project, i do not dare to not vote for the government” or “it is better that taib rules sarawak than to allow communists dap and malaya pkr to govern” or “if it were not because of taib, dayaks would lose their rights to the chinese”

No point in making threats of “potong kepala” or “sumpit” when it just hot air!

  6. Jeffrey Kitingan is finally showing his true colours by praising the thief minister of Sarawak for being steadfast by not allowing Umno into Sarawak. We just wonder how much election funding he is trying to fish from the most corrupted chief minister in the world? Jeffrey Kitingan being a season politician and someone who walked the corrider of power before knew very well that both Tun Rahman Yacub and Taib Mahmud were the proxies of Umno in Sarawak and Umno received substantial fundings from the thief minister of Sarawak. Because of that the thief minister of Sarawak
Taib Mahmud is untouchable for as long as Umno led BN is still in power. To say Jeffrey Kiinganis a political retard is an understatement. This big time crook just want power and to make millions in GE13.

  7. In the previous sarawak state election, all Bn need was to give the locals RM15 and it was more than enough to get them to vote for bn
I’m sure Bn will use the same excuse via the BR1M… there are still many locals who are still bound by gratitude or still assume that this is government money

Paramount Raja of Corruption in Swk = Taib, Awang Setengah, PBB, PRS, SPDP and SUPP troops of pirate lanun
Paramount Chief of Corruption in Sbh = Musa Aman, Safie and gangs of conmen and robbers

This is your year, the Chinese Year of snakes, the black cold blooded snakes. Your days will end very soon, prepare to pack your bags and go before PR drag you into penjara

  9. All thanks to RFS, the natives are slowly but surely waking up to find that they had be had by their own leaders and elected reps. The leaders not only got rich from corruption but have the cheek and the gumption to steal from their own people taking their only possession they have, their land. We pray that Pakatan will come to power and go after these corrupt leaders, return to the natives their land and use the money recovered from these thieves for the benefit of the natives.

  10. The paramount thief minister Taib Mahmud must be stopped for his ill conceived and intended projects from Tanjung Manis through Balingian to Baram. The incorrigible and highly corrupted thief minister is only interested in generating income for his family’s company, the CMS groups of companies and Titanium Management . Sarawakians must not only ensure Pakatan captures all the six urban parliamentary seats but must also ensure PR defeats umno controlled BN in majority of the semi urban and rural seats. Sarawakians definitely do not need BN at all after how we have been deceived, cheated and marginalised for over 50 years. Mahathir, Najib, Taib and Musa must be investigated and charged for blatant corruption and power abuse .

  11. Surely Baram PKR knows best how to analyse the support she has in Baram but just incase there is a missing-link do not overly rely on what you see among our Kenyah brethrens at Ulu Baram or rather from Middle Baram to Ulu Baram. Work extra hard in Apoh/Tutoh regions and Lower Baram as well as among our Iban-brethrens in Marudi area and do not forget our brethrens in Tinjar and Bakong areas too. Now, Mr Rolland Engan, as a Christian, you must bring your audience to pray before starting every public speech and along the way during your visit you must not hesitate to shake hands with everyone you meet, bystanders, childrens and your known enemies (if any) included. Just be humble in your speech and avoid personal attack on your opponent although you may say “enough is enough…..” of your opponent. In Baram, telling the people of your development plans and promises do not carry much weight. Instead, tell the people why you are determined to serve them. The NGOs and individuals against the Baram dam can greatly help you. As I see it, you still need………………….so plan realistically and with GOD’s help you will prevail. Best wishes

    • May the Almighty God bestow upon you, Mr. Rolland Engan and YB Baru Bian and team, HIS most powerful blessing of strength, wisdom, protection, guidance, spiritual coverage, the same power that HE put on Moses to bring His people out from Egypt to the promised land, and how HE drowned the whole enemy army, and all the promises HE has made on HIS Words to deliver the oppressed from the hands of evils and dark forces. For the Chinese, this is the year of the black snake, yes all the black wicked snakes of Sarawak and Malaysia will be crushed out

May all churches and children of GOD join to pray for the beautiful lands, peace loving people of BARAM which GOD has created and those “snakes” intend to destroy, Halleluyah, Amen

The social economic crimes committed by Taib and Co. have made themselves their own worse enemy serving to turn every one else against them.

Their greed for wealth through cruel exploitation of the land and people seems bottomless.

But still PBB BN would not be where they are today without Malaya’s UMNO BN’s backing to keep them in power.

In fighting the Taib criminal gang, we must not lose sight of the devil behind Taib- his Malayan colonial masters and their gang who work hand and in hand with Taib to plunder and rape of our land.

After we get rid of Taib we have to get rid of Malayan colonial rule.
