SAVE RIVERS lodges police report against IHA and Sarawak Energy

save riverBruno Manser Fonds

The International Hydropower Assocation’s World Congress to be held in Kuching, Sarawak/ Malaysia, from 21 to 24 May 2013, is beginnig badly.

Peter Kallang, an important indigenous leader from Baram, Sarawak, has been barred this morning from a pre-congress workshop organized jointly by the International Hydropower Association (IHA), the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Despite having paid the horrendous IHA World Congress’ registration fee of USD 1750, Mr. Kallang was stopped this morning from boarding a bus to the International Hydropower Association’s pre-congress workshop at Sarawak Energy Bhd’s office. The reason given to Mr. Kallang was that he had written critical letters to the International Hydropower Association’s chairman, Richard Taylor, over the IHA’s cooperation with the regime of Sarawak Chief Minister Taib Mahmud and the association’ss policy to exclude affected indigenous people from the congress.

Mr. Kallang, who is heading the Save Sarawak Rivers network, lodged a police report against the responsible IHA representative, Mr. Douglas Smith, who apparently acted upon instruction by Sarawak Energy.

The Bruno Manser Fund strongly condemns this attempt by the International Hydropower Association and by Sarawak Energy to silence critical voices and demands an immediate apology from IHA Director Richard Taylor over the incident and a guarantee that Mr. Kallang and all indigenous and NGO representatives will be granted unlimited access to the IHA congress.

The leadership of the World Bank, the IFC, the ADB and the IDB will be notified over this grave incident against basic standards of fairness and will be asked for an explanation

  1. Torstein Dale Sjoveit is a CEO without substance and a conman. Telling stories are emerging from Sarawak Energy to ordinary Sarawakians of his sheer incompetence, ignorance, and lack of vision, in running a company like Sarawak Energy. Behind the public relations exercise in the likes of IHA conference, SEB’s sponsorship of social events, etc. that he’s using to create an impression of a leading and well-runned organization, he may be heading SEB to financial ruin. That’s why he has repeatedly refused to disclose to the Sarawak public’s request on how the RM15 billion loan is being responsibly spent.

According to sources in SEB, the Murum project costs has now balloned and the project is further delayed from the original contractual schedule. SEB employees in Projects Execution department had also secretly revealed that their head of department, the CEO’s buddy, henchman, and fellow Norwegian Einar Kilde, is just as incompetent and at a loss as how to manage power projects, as a result of which many projects are improperly managed, suffers from cost overrun, and worst delayed as compared to the time when projects were managed by local Sarawakians.

And the CEO is getting paid US1.2 million a year for these mess he is creating! Together with Einar Kilde who is paid US600,000 per annum they are both ripping Sarawakians off nearly US2 million per annum for achieving nothing so far. For those salaries SEB can employ three Malaysian CEO’s who are much more competent and well versed with local requirements. And he has the cheek to demand from SEB an annual bonus of 5-9 months of his outrageous salary when an average SEB employee gets just between 1.5-2 months bonus and a meagre amount compared to his! If he is not a conman then who is? !!!!!

So his claim that he is only helping Sarawak is a big joke. He is only a soldier of fortune and a hypocrite who will pack and leave when the next employer offers him even a slightly higher wage. Word has it that with his ill-gotten wealth from a developing country like Sarawak, he has already bought a yacht and building a dream house in Norway. Nothing can be more hypocritical then his claim that he is trying to help Sarawakians and Sarawak! If he conducts himself professionally and transparently, then he must disclose what and how much benefits he is getting from your contract with SEB? Otherwise Sarawakians will only be convinced that he is a conman and demand that the CEO resigns and leaves Sarawak immediately!!!

  4. Decades ago when Bruno Manser was struggling it was not easy to imagine that whats achieved so far is possible but thanks to the computer, with Google Glass coming, the world has become smaller.

But, are we big enough to face it?
