Najib: We’ll never leave Sabah and Sarawak behind

As Malaysia marks the 50th year since its formation, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak today vowed that the development of Sabah and Sarawak, the first and third most poorest state in terms average household income, is the nation’s priority.

In his Malaysia Day message, he said that this, however, does not mean that the two Borneo states were ever sidelined by the federal administration.

“As prime minister, I have always strived to ensure that equal development for all states…. Our efforts to develop Sabah and Sarawak’s economy will always be the government’s priority.

“Indeed life in these two states have changed drastically over the 50 years, in line with global development,” he said in the message published on his official website.

He said that proof that the government cares about Sabah and Sarawak can be seen through the federal allocation of RM2 billion for 79 infrastructure projects in the state in 2010.

He said these include projects under the Sarawak Renewable Energy Corridor (Score) and the Sabah Development Corridor.

Autonomous rights acknowledged

Meanwhile, Najib acknowledged that the formation of Malaysia on Sept 16, 1963 was a “compromise reached in order to safeguard the interests of Sabah, Sarawak and the Malay Federated States”.

This, he said, included the autonomous rights of Sabah and Sarawak as outlined by the 20-point agreement formulated by the Cobbold Commission.

Putrajaya’s alleged reneging of the 20-point agreement was often claimed by opposition parties in the last general election campaign, particularly in Sabah where allegations of unfair oil royalty agreements were raised.

According to the Department of Statistics’ latest household income survey, Sabah has the highest percentage of households living under the poverty line at 8.1 percent.

However, this has improved from 23 percent in 2004 and 16 percent in 2007.

According to the Economic Planning Unit, households living under the poverty line for Sabah survive on RM1,048 per month.

Meanwhile 2.4 percent of Sarawak households are poor, with the poverty line there set at RM912 a month per household.

  1. After Mahathir, African Apartheid is entrnched in Malaysia. It has neither transparency (non-corruption) nor real human rights, neither freedom of the media nor true democracy. eg: 99% of National Oil Petronas’ staff are Malays (only 50% of the population – Wikipedia). ‘Bumiputra’. How can a race be treated superior to another, especially when they work the least. The crime of apartheid is defined by the 2002 Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court as inhumane acts of a character similar to other crimes against humanity” committed in the context of an institutionalized regime of systematic oppression and domination by one racial group over any other racial group or groups and committed with the intention of maintaining that regime.”

  2. All the revenues from oil & gas, sucked dry by the Federal Gov’t and indirectly by UMNO/BN with little or nothing left for Sabah & Sarawak. Just compare: Scotland in Great Britain and Quebec in Canada had an open, honest & fair national referendum on cessation/separation. Any talk of independence and your ex Sabah CM Tun Faud Donald Stephens died in a crash. Sabah & Sarawak are a total tragedy, not even a proper trunk road! The natives lack electricity and drinking water while Criminals bought submarines and built twin towers costing multi-billions for kick-backs; all cronies live in palaces. Outrageous! BN’s evil is earth-shaking.

  3. Your PM: Fake, Fraud, Charlatan, lying through the teeth and up the roof day after day. An Absolute disgrace in the eyes of the world. Besides Skorpene’s Mongolian, and countless scandals & election rigging, by condoning gigantic corruption & theft under his nose ( eg Sarawak’s Taib Mahmud, plundering CM of 32 years), he has undermined the democracy, transparency and overall well-being of the nation. He should have been impeached for Treason years ago. The stench is smelled across the world. Alan Newman NZ.

  4. As prime minister, I have always strived to ensure that equal development for all states…. Our efforts to develop Sabah and Sarawak’s economy will always be the government’s priority. But Najib failed to explain why his son is linked to !MDB, UBG and Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala Development Company.

    • Sarawak is lagging very far behind but not the Sarawak’s thief minister whose family owns CMS, UBG, Loh & Loh Corporation Bhd, Putrajaya Perdana among the many listed companies and Taib Mahmud’s family is a minority shareholder of Petro Saudi Internationa through share swap in UBG and Mubadala Development Company. Najib’s family is also Taib Mahmud’s business partners through projects undertaken by 1MDB and projects in SCORE Sarawak.

  5. Putrajaya should only take 5% of the petroleum in Sabah and Sarawak if he wants the two “states” to remain in Malaysia.. Brunei should negotiate to form a new nation with Sabah and Sarawak.

  6. I hope and believe that Awang Tengah will be the next CM because he is another Taib in the making – home grown, rich and ruthless, fearless against UMNO onslaught. He happens to be my senior in school.

    • Unfortunately Awang Tengah Ali Hassan is also being investigated by MACC. His hands are tied and is also a liability to Sarawak’s BN.

  7. Don’t believe a word he said. He never kept his promise thus far. And we must never let Umno start here. Its like inviting thieves to come to your house.

    • Sarawak will be doomed if Umno enlarges its influence in the state.

      • Taib Mahmud is UMNO and UMNO Sarawak is Taib Mahmud. Sarawak Bumiputras have been fooled by Tun Rahman Yacub and Taib Mahmud for the past 40 years thinking that they could prevent UMNO from expanding into Sarawak. Even some stupid BN leaders from PBB, PRS, and SPDP still think that without Taib Mahmud, Sarawak is at the mercy of UMNO Baru. Wake up Sarawakians.

  8. Promises, promises…every year and every election times, we have been hearing same all promises about not neglecting Sabah and Sarawak. So how come both Sabah and Sarawak are the POOREST STATES in Malaysia. Do you think we still can believe all these talks, vows and promises. Its high time all these BN Politicians from Sabah and Sarawak look at yourself individually into a mirror and see your own reflection. Touch your HEART and see what is being done for Sabah and Sarawak .

  10. Kepada YB. Perdana Menteri Dato’ Sri Haji Mohammad Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak,

    Sekian, Terima kasih
