M'sia Muslim authority raids Bible Society, detain officers & seize copies of AL-KITABMaria Begum

In a move that is bound create another major split in the country, the Selangor Islamic Religious department (JAIS) raided the Bible Society of Malaysia on Thursday, seizing 300-over copies of the Alkitab or Malay-language Bible and even detaining its chairman and office manager.

“This is outrageous and a highly provocative act. As a Christian and a Malaysian guaranteed rights to religious freedom under the Federal Constitution, I demand an immediate explanation from Prime Minister Najib Razak,” MP for Wangsa Maju Tan Kee Kwong told writer.

“I see this as a very dangerous move by very irresponsible leaders. It can really pit ordinary Christian and Muslim folk at loggerheads with each other. As it is now, there is already so much underground hatred among the races and this is due to deliberate fanning of racism and bigotry by the top government leaders. I urge them not to gamble with the peace and happiness of the nation just because they want to hide their failures and deflect attention from the No. 1 concern of the people today – the sinking economy and the sky-rocketing costs of living.”

The raid was  carried out at 2pm today.

According to The Malaysian Insider, JAIS officials showed up without any warning and carted away more than 300 copies of the Alkitab and 10 copies of the Bup Kudus.

Bible Society chairman Lee Min Choon and general-secretary Sinclair Wong were ordered to follow Jais officers to the Damansara Utama police station.

It is unclear if JAIS had over-stepped its legal boundaries in doing so. Constitutional lawyers have warned that JAIS’ power extend only to Muslims and can be sued if they exert their authority on non-Muslims.

Meanwhile, both Lee and Wong have been released on bail after a 90-minute interrogation at the police beat. They were also oredered to report to JAIS on Jan 10 “to further assist in investigations”.

Double-talking PM

The sudden Malaysian hardline action is actually not at all unexpected from Prime Minister Najib Razak’s regime.

While he portrays himself as a ‘global moderate’ at overseas forums and called for an end to Islam-o-phobia, when at home, he regularly orders such crackdowns aimed to politically divide Malaysia’s 28 million population along racial and religious lines.

The Alkitab crackdown follows the Najib administration’s ban on the use of the word Allah by non-Muslims to describe God.

The PM has tried to justify his actions with a recently-released survey that showed 77% of Malays did not want to share the word with other faiths, although this has been ridiculed by Muslim communities in other parts of the world especially in the Middle East.

All eyes on reaction from Sabah and Sarawak

All eyes are now on the response from Christians in Sabah and Sarawak, whose Christian leaders in the government have sabre-rattled loudly whenever the issue was safely ‘cold’.

Now with the latest raid and seizure heating up the Allan ban again, it remains to be seen if BN Christian leaders from the 2 states, which contain large communities of Christians, will abandon members of their faith in the peninsula or rise with them to demand immediate response and apology from Najib himself.

No right over non-Muslims, breach of 10-point agreement

According to a Bible Society member, it was conducting its stock take today and its staff had refused to open the door when some 20 JAIS officers accompanied by two policemen arrived after lunch.

“They told our people in the office that they had five minutes to open up, otherwise they would force themselves in. When the office called me, I told them not to let anyone in because JAIS has no authority over non-Muslims, neither did they have any letter or warrant to search the premises,” said the council member.

He said that soon after, Bible Society chief Lee arrived at the office and decided to allow five JAIS officers to go in. After seizing some 321 holy books in 16 boxes, Lee and office manager Wong were told to follow the JAIS officers to the Damansara Utama police station

According to the council member, the Bible Society’s main roles was to import Bibles from Indonesia for distribution. The Bibles in Malay language would therefore contain the word Allah, and Najib himself had said the Alkitab was exempt from the controversial Appeals Court ruling that had prohibited Catholic weekly The Herald from using the word.

“At the door, they said they wanted to come in as there were Bibles containing the word ‘Allah’. But that is nothing new and should not come as a surprise, this is what we do, import Bibles containing the word as allowed in the 10-point solution made by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Idris Jala,” the council member said.

Police stooges and the use of might is right

Today’s raid comes after The Herald’s editor Rev Father Lawrence Andrew said that Catholic churches in Selangor would continue to use the word “Allah” in their weekend services in Bahasa Malaysia, which are primarily attended by Sabah and Sarawak folk.

“You cannot just simply impose a law and say you cannot do this. What authority does JAIS have over Christians?” The Malay Mail reported Lawrece as saying.

Malaysian police, often accused of being stooges of the Najib regime, have said they will summon Father Lawrence over his comments.

Meawhile, JAIS’ new director ais Ahmad Zaharin Mohd Saad has said his agency would draw up a list of Selangor churches before writing to ask them to comply with the Selangor Non-Islamic Religions (Control of Propagation Among Muslims) Enactment 1988.

“We will write to all the churches in Selangor to respect the law that is in force in relation to this,” he was quoted as saying.

Nonetheless, legal experts have said the state enactments cannot apply to non-Muslims and are over-ridden by the Federal Constitution.

Stage agencies like JAIS are empowered against non-Muslims only if the latter are caught trying to convert Muslims from their Islamic faith. The Federal Constitution also prohibits conversion of Muslims.

  1. If ever the Islamic authority in Sarawak were as ignorant and blatantly arrogant as Jais their heads would be hanging in the lamp post in the longhouse.

  2. Detaining officers and confiscating a holy book is an act of the devil. Please detain and confiscate books, vcds, cds, magazines, papers, pamphlets and flyers belonging to Ahlongs, pimps, illegal gambling dens, parlours and illegal bodies/buddies/bio-disc/bullies/bet agencies etc etc

  3. Only a coward marches into a person’s house confiscating belongings and arresting him for keeping a holy book. Do these religious officers dare to arrest Datuk and Tan Sri berkhalwat in 5 star hotels in KL? What is this religious authority doing to prevent many men from marrying his second, third and fourth wife in Southern Thailand?

  4. Little gods in action to gain media attentions. “Allah” is helpless? No thanks for promoting “Islamphobia”. A religion of compulsion and intolerant? Now we know why they are confusing themselves in this web of deceit.

  5. This is just a Sandiwara to divert away attention on subjects like: POOR education system, Barang Naik, POORER exchange rate against foreign currencies due to weak economy in Bodohland. The similar scenario was in 1969, in order to topple late Tunku, the “M”aster “M”ind of 1969 racial riot finally took over as PM of Bodohland. Similary in Japan, PM Abe had to create an illusion of enemy–China, so to amend Constitution to facilitate Japan to become military superpower house with the direct help of usa. The ultimate aim of Allah case is to create a racial riot, best if possible, so current regime can declare Bodohland is under martial rule, for as long as current problems are solve in later day, for how long? Allah knows.

  6. These ruthless uncivilized goons will face the wrath of the true Living God. These satanic followers are being watched by God for their evil deeds. They will face the wrath of God sooner or later

  7. * When the people rallied for free & fair elections, Dr MM the world’s monster of apartheid, said the opposition is trying to topple the gov’t. When one wants to hold on to power & luxury, one would say and do anything, control all the media, use gerrymandering & project IC, buy voters & elections, bluff, bullshit, bludgeon & butcher his way through if necessary.

*Take the Mongolian’s murder. Those involved were: the PM’s body guards, the army’s explosives, the PM’s buddy Baginda – both had liaisons with the Mongolian who was demanding half a million in fees which paled beside the hundreds of millions in kickbacks with the submarines’ RM7.6 billion outlay. Look at the circumstantial evidence!

    * PM says UMNO is not racist. Where is the sincerity or moral? Absolute ZERO! How many Chinese get a job in Petronas or civil services or an entrance into Msian Universities? All are equal in the eyes of God. The Chinese are human beings too – children of God. They worked harder to build the M’sian economy, without all those Bumi perks, licenses, car APs, cronies, projects, parasites, separate schools & exams, separate mutual funds & scholarships, separate housing discounts, loan schemes; separate cities of Putrajaya, Shah Alam, Bangi, etc. “The crime of apartheid is defined by the 2002 Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court as inhumane acts of a character similar to other crimes against humanity” On top of that sowing the seeds of racial religious hatred.

  8. * Taib’s wealth rivals that of Marcos or Mubarak. His crime is 100% condoned by Dr MM & PM. after 32 yrs as CM controlling every aspect of economic activities. Logging, agric, infrastruct, developmt, mining… endless. He appoints all the key state personell & mayors without democratic processes. He ‘owns’ the whole State & bars opposition & NGOs entering the airports. Imagine Britain’s PM and NZ’s PM meddling in logging, timber, mining, infrastruct, oil palm, shipping. in land-grabs, housing developmt.! Would they last 1 month in office? Taib lasted 32 years with many more to go.

    * You have 13 sultans, a King and a Rosmah dressed in diamonds & glitters, plus a thousand others crowning themselves Tuns, Tansris, Datuks, Datos, Pehin, Padukas. Bill Gates & Warren Buffet made $$ honestly and gave almost half their wealth in tens of US$ billions to charity, even Soros whom Dr MM disparaged gave US$100million in 2011. They address each other as Bill, Warren, George. Not even a ‘Sir’. What a global laughing stock you are. Shame on you Tuns, Tansirs ! We all pray for an Act of God. It may be before or after death where there’s permanent fire in thousands of degrees centigrade.

  9. Suddenly JAIS itself found itself very busy and preoccupied. There is now plenty of situations vacant on their hands or vacancies for enforcement officers to check and spy on the churches and the movements of the Christians. That’s good news for the “unemployables” especially those who majored in Islamic Studies. One more idea to sell to the majority Malays that UMNO really takes care of their welfare needs, even find them employment if they are jobless.

On a different note, playing up the fires of the Allah controversy and the entailing bible seizure issue takes our minds off the price hikes. Malaysians are easily distracted and are no longer focused on the price hikes and rising cost of living troubling their daily lives. The limelight is no longer shining on the UMNO government’s corruption and abuse of power, mismanagement and incompetence. Even Rosmah’s son possessing a RM100 million luxury condo by crooked means is relegated as yesterday’s old news.

And finally, by getting JAIS to do the needful the UMNO government is putting the Pakatan S”elangor state government in a quandary. UMNO wants to sell the Malays it is BN (NOT PR) who are defenders of the race and protector of the religion” with the Allah/Bible controversy. Malays are easily diverted where once they were beginning to feel the heat of the price hikes. As they were beginning to stir with anger with UMNO, it was time for JAIS to act and rally the Malays once again behind UMNO as “defenders of thee race and protector of the religion”. The anger of the Malays is thus diverted to focus on Allah in lieu of price hikes.

In Malaysian politics. UMNO must always be seen as the champion of the Malays. Christians, like the second class Chinese “pendatangs” are just convenient scapegoats when they are handy for UMNO to play racial politics. Mahathir said “Melayu mudah lupa”, I take that to mean the majority Malays are easily distracted. UMNO sure knows how to kill two birds with one stone.

    1) Distract the Malays over the Allah issue. Take their minds off the price hikes.

    2) Create problems for Pakatan Rakyat (PR) and deploy JAIS to act in Selangor

  10. So which law is superior, state enactment or constitution? Does JAIS have jurisdiction over non Muslims. Why do they need to report to JAIS? MALAYSIA a land where up is down and down is up. Frustrating!
