Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir (pic) today expressed concern that Barisan Nasional might lose in the 14th general election if Putrajaya continued implementing unpopular decisions.

“Defeat is a real possibility if Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak continues with his present policy of correct but unpopular decisions, especially issues concerning the rising cost of living.”

“If Putrajaya continues to ignore the rakyat’s grouses and complaints, Barisan Nasional will find the 14th general election a tough nut to crack.”

“Voters who supported Barisan Nasional in last year’s general elections are bound to feel that the party they supported had forgotten the grassroots,” Mukhriz said.

Mukhriz pointed out that Barisan Nasional had just managed to scrape through the 13th general election without coming close to winning the two-thirds majority.

“Barisan Nasional’s performance in the last general elections shows that we have not fully regained the rakyat’s confidence.

“I am very worried that although we have implemented good policies, but we have ignored the issue of popularity,” Mukhriz said.

“If the voters already have a negative perception of Barisan Nasional, it will not matter whether we have done the right thing or not.”

He warned that once the rakyat’s perception had turned negative, it would be too late to do damage control.

Mukhriz was speaking to Berita Harian in an exclusive interview in the Sunday edition.

He had different views on the various policies implemented and actions taken by Najib, who had defended his unpopular decisions as being necessary for the good of the country and people.

Najib has reduced fuel subsidies, removed the sugar subsidy, increased electricity tariffs and the toll rates, all of which have been greeted with anger by the rakyat.

“Popularity is very important in the general election and without it, there is no way that a candidate or political party can garner votes,” Mukhriz said.

“There is no guarantee that whoever is giving advice is sincere in helping, so Barisan Nasional needs to be creative in order to solve the rakyat’s problems, in a popular and correct manner.”

Mukhriz said another problem was the issue of who was saying that good was not popular. We must find the solution ourselves, not based on advice from outsiders or those with their own interests at stake.

  1. Dato Mukhriz is not in Najib’s camp and he sees things differently. I want Mukhriz to continue his maverick ways to oust Rosmah (Najib is only second fiddle to Rosmah). Our de facto (ketua umum) BN is Datin Seri Diraja Rose Mansor.

  2. At least there are some odd ostriches which are not burying their heads in the sand. However, it seems that time is running thin on the opportunity in changing the general public negative perception on Barang Naik. Hope walker is wrong.

  3. At least there is somebody in UMNO calling a spade a spade, otherwise everybody keep quiet in hypocrisy. He is a real leader of the future.

  4. He is acting tough because old man ada di belakang faning the api. He would be exactly like his old man if he has the chance to be pm and that’s when we Christians would finally find the true colours of perkasa his old man is supporting!

    • His old man has hairs on the head and his almost bald, thus cannot be exact. I think a bald man has different mind set because of ” cool ” head whilst the opposite panas mahu ambil semua peluang yang negara ada. Cool head more reasonable. Good for religious harmony. If PR cannot win,Mukhriz boleh jugah lah. Tak ada pilihan yang lain.See he already planned for 14GE.

      • Didn’t he say that ALLAH is exclusive to Muslims? And is that reasonable and good for religious harmony? Wasn’t he parroting his old man when he said that?

You are not being realistic at all!

  5. Dato Mukhriz is the only sitting head of state government voicing the truth. The others are defeated MPs and retired politicians. There are better days ahead for you Mukhriz. Keep it up!!!
