PKR: Selangor politics too much for Khalid

PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim has dismissed allegations he is vying for the Kajang seat merely to resolve the party’s internal feud, as suggested by many of his critics.

In a press conference at the Al Nadhoh mosque late last night, Anwar further explained that it is beyond current Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim’s (left) capabilities, or terms of reference, to handle the political challenges in Selangor, especially in the face of propaganda and pressure from the federal government.

Anwar said the overall strategy behind the “Kajang move” is that it is critical for Selangor to go beyond just being an efficient state, and to maintain the status quo.

“To be seen as a model is to be able to withstand the incessant propaganda and continuous pressure from the federal government, which renders many of our programmes either delayed or derailed,” Anwar said after addressing about 800 in Kubang Semang, in Seberang Perai, Penang.

The crowd included DAP, PAS and PKR supporters, including MPs Mansor Othman (Nibong Tebal), Sim Tze Tzin (Bayan Baru) and Steven Sim (Bukit Mertajam).

Social activist and former Bersih co-coordinator Toh Kin Woon were among the speakers, who while seeking answers for Anwar’s latest move, showed support for his candidacy in Kajang.

‘Getting nowhere’

In explaining further about the challenges in Selangor, Anwar cited the case of water problems, adding that Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim has done everything in his power to resolve the matter.

“I have also been advising him on it but he is getting nowhere,” disclosed Anwar, who is also Opposition leader in Parliament and Permatang Pauh MP.

He cited similar cases of federal allocations and actions of the state religious departments.

The latest one being the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) raid on the office of the Bible Society of Malaysia in Petaling Jaya on Jan 2. It seized 320 bibles in the Malay and Iban languages, while two of the organisation’s staff were detained by the police.

Anwar said there are views that a Malay should be responding to these issues, which have national importance.

He added that as an opposition leader alone, he cannot enforce or act on these increasing challenges in Selangor.

“We have to recognise these are problems. There have been a lot of consternation and concern among our people, from Malays, Christians and others.

“Khalid has been, in some ways, very effective but this is beyond his capabilities and term of reference,” he added.

Asked if Selangor needed more of a politician and not a CEO in the MB post, Anwar agreed. “The posts of prime minister, ministers, chief minister or menteri besar are political offices.

“But to suggest that this is purely an internal PKR feud, is not really correct. If it were, it does not warrant my intervention to this level. We are talking about governance.

“Where good governance and economic management is concerned, we will continue the good work of Khalid, but I think we need to go beyond that,” he added.

Anwar said those who underestimated the importance of the political need to mobilise the state as a political force for Pakatan, are “grossly mistaken”.

He added that Pakatan cannot effectively talk about an alternative government without the capacity to show proof that it can weather this storm.

Asked about the current public opinions, many of which show that people are confused about the situation in Selangor, Anwar it was due to the restrictions and limited coverage of the party’s views in the media.

“Due to this, it is only fair that people raise their concerns about the issue. We will continue to explain,” he said assured, adding that Umno has started its “vicious” campaign in Kajang.

Speculation rife

Speculation is rife that Anwar may engineer Khalid’s resignation and seize the MB post if he wins the Kajang seat, which does not sit well with some quarters, including PKR allies – DAP, PAS and some NGOs.

Others speculate that the recent manoeuvres towards Kajang is Anwar’s strategy to keep in check the party’s deputy president Azmin Ali (left), a well-known dissenter in Khalid’s court, who some claim, is also eyeing the MB’s seat.

“There is a view (that Anwar should become MB) but we have to win the election first. So when people ask are you going to be the MB? I tell them, please help us win the Kajang seat first,” he added.

There is also speculation that the Selangor sultan may intervene, dissolve the Selangor assembly and call for a state election if Khalid resigns.

“I don’t think it is appropriate to involve the sultan. It is not fair to pre-judge the Tuanku in this matter,” Anwar said.

“It is also not fair to prejudice our stance or comments and unnecessarily implicate the role of the ruler,” he added.

“It is also unfair because we have the rule of law. Our constitution is clear and should be respected by all – the ruling and opposition parties,” he stressed.

On his ability to juggle two posts – MP in Permatang Pauh and assemblyman in Kajang, Anwar replied “why is it not a problem for someone in Sabah or Sarawak?

“I don’t know why for an MP in Permatang Pauh, it is a problem. Kajang is just 30 minutes from KL, and Permatang Pauh is only 40 minutes by flight. In most cases, I come by car.

“It is a problem because it is Anwar. Others from Sabah and Sarawak are not Anwar,” he said, smiling.

The Kajang seat fell vacant on Jan 27 when it’s former assemblyman, Lee Chin Cheh, resigned – citing the “common good and to strengthen the party’s ability to serve Selangor better” as the reason for his decision.

  1. If it is beyond Khalid’s capabilities to handle the political challenges in Selangor, why even consider appointing Khalid as PKR election director for Kajang by-election? Again, Anwar wants someone else to take the blame if things go wrong in the by-election. He is using Khalid who is loved by most Selangorians to woe Kajang voters and later on ditch Khalid. Otherwise, how can he handle both Khalid and Azmin at the same time!

  2. That why I said you are living in a world “Once upon a time… and lived happily ever after ” This is a real world and we are just mere mortal evolving trying to perfect our world. One tried system after another. There is no absolute system to ensure equality and justice unless you get advice from a person who walk on water and turn water to wine. To survive this world we have to be a part of the larger community. The western worlds and/or America system is still considered most appropriate than Kim Jong Un or Kazai or Theocracy of Arab world. Japan,Korea,Taiwan and Singapore are economically strong countries that are using the capitalistic system. Look how progressive they are. We love their Toyota,Kia,Taiwanese scantily dressed beetle nut sellers and strong Singapore dollars. If you do not like this system, try system used by Tarzan and Jane and Chimpanzees.

      • Hi pissoff!

There’s no such thing as appropriate. If we’re contextualizing Malaysia I recall saying its totalitarian! Which is neither democratic nor appropriate! But like China for instance, its totalitarian too but the elites and wealthy are just as capitalists as those in America. Once they shipped lots of dough via Hong Kong and Singapore which became rich then. All because those few, in China as in America are both materially ferocious!

The degree of governance also depends on a lot of things. Sophistication in more advances countries like America can make it brutally worst, just shades less than the sufferings of North Korean citizens. You have to read non Mainstream American media about how bad it could be now in sufferings of average folks. It could be bad in UK, too, right now. Ever read the tale of the little frozen girl and her match box?

How do people rationalize, in America when the Finance crooks busted the banks and the extent of the damage they did blackmailed the whole nation – too big to fail !? Thats worst than North Korea which we know so little about. In the US instance, you have to think about ethics, something more that you would need to weigh than in backward countries. Then it makes it all the worst! Shouldnt advanced people know more about ethics?

The US just let those money devils got away free! Even bailed them out – gave them money so they could start their old tricks again!!! In American history, two Prezs shut down the Bank ( before Federal Reserve) – Washington and Jackson. Now they cannot — in other words its blackmail (or whitemail). How did civilized people get to be so raw???

There are people in America who dont think of the “advancedness” as you perceive it. The system (advanced) is predatory (like animals?) and yet they are ADVANCED???

There are more diversity in intellectualism in America and NOT JUST THE MOST ADVANCEDness as you put it! But you wont get it from mainstream American Media who support the predatory system! That is sometimes dubbed as the consent manufacturers!

So comparison standards must be more demanding of advanced countries. This makes those rich Yankees act like barbarians —they are supposed to be more advanced arent they???

        • I am in total agreement with what your opinions.Since man started to live in community till today, only Zeus ( Greek god) knows how many systems had been tried since bronze age. But yet none of these systems can provide salvation to mankind. To conclude nature win it all since we are unable to rein in our cannibalistic nature in us. After all man is just actor of his own ideals. He wrote the scripts and acted according to the scripts. Why I advocate a pinch of democracy because I can drink my beer in peace without the gaze full eyes of Ayatollah or Kim Jong Un. No matter how most advanced one nation is, the carnal nature of man will rule and supersede the noble intention of man.We have to live with whatever in place that provide us with a little peace..But I admire progressive nations with their rocket boosters and high definition TV. It’s a pity the greatest man of high moral died 2,000 years ago or else we can ask him to constitute the most JUST system of government.

  3. In Malaysian politics, Pakatan is not only facing UMNO BARU controlled BN but. also UMNO BARU controlled EC, ROS, PDRM, AGD, Islamic Authorities and Royalty. In addition, Pakatan and its leaders are also fighting against UMNO BARU’s brand of dirty and money politics and their spin agents.

    • “brand of dirty and money politics” ???

SE Asia has a bunch of dictatorships and the West likes it for many reasons. If the TPPA gets signed, which many Msians dont want it completes a sellout by BN Dictatorship. Then the dominant partners of TPP mainly US, Australia & others can sell products Msians have to buy, not freely, legal control on disputes and they rule our markets and lives. Next they’ll sell arms and weapons, wrap you up and its done – The military of these so-called trade partners have theirarmies to back up the bizness.

SEA becomes recolonialized by their military and commercial complexes !!!

      • Singapore is a sore in the asses of Malaysian ordinary citizens. They can spin all they want. Simple fact, Lee Kuan is a dictator no less than Mahathir and Najib.

Singapore’s GDP of $275 b compared to Msia’s $300 b is a big puzzle to many though not to some. If only Singapore’s and Malaysia’s media are free! The Island has only 1/6 population of Malaysia, no natural resources and makes tons of money. That makes no donkey sense.

The same military and commercial complexes have been bleeding Indonesia and Malaysia and the SEA regions and Singapore is the Barua!!!

        • You are still living in Han Christian Anderson world full of fairy tales. The real world is where nature strived and is all about the survival of the fittest. In nature world in which we are part of it, the weak and disadvantages are quickly devoured by stronger animals. If we recognized this we have no choice but to be a part of the larger communities by grouping or joining an alliance. Even Israel is in alliance with western nations and America. If not the neighbours are just awaiting to gobble them down. Since the dawn of times human need arms to protect their own specie and ensure the survival of the specie. Given a choice I would rather live in a nation that upholds laws and constitutions not a nation that cherry pick laws only to meet their own purposes.

          Comment by pissoff — February 3, 2014 @ 2:17 PM | Reply

          • Cherry pick! Yeah ! Sure Man!

The democratic world that you suck up to, is no different. They may be strong sure. But why ass yourself out, huh?

Tell me, friend! In the American Democracy that you lap up to, and err, worship, they have some blessings. We too have ours but you might need some time to piece it through.

If you havent read enough, didnt you know that US legislature forgave the money devils and banks for all the raids on everybody’s money? And some more, not a few didnt even pay their corporate taxes. Did you know that the so-called free countries that pretend to be capitalistic and chaste are no better than totalitarian nations? If there are some humanizing notions, its because of ‘people’. Malaysians may not be white, but they are ‘people’.

Here’s a simple puzzle. Definition of Capitalism:- Man exploits Man. Communism is its absolute exact opposite.

            Enjoy your kangkung! 😆

        • you may want to know HOW Kangkungland cultivated students up to certain level, could not get a place in local institution due to KULIFITCATIONs, then Reddotland provides them with scholarships, absorbed them for further bonds+scholarships for further degree in education, this is GOOD enough for people who talk L j to shut their BIG mouths.
