Outgoing CM Taib Mahmud’s expressed view of Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) will relieve CM Adenan Satem of having to make a decision.

If there was any possibility of a future for Sarawak’s oldest Chinese party, SUPP, it ended yesterday when its ‘patron’ Taib Mahmud stepped down Chief Mnister.

The state’s longest serving chief minister Taib’s parting words of wisdom to Sarawak United Peoples Party (SUPP) was to close-shop or alternatively re-unite under a new party.

The division within the party is irreconcilable and and the ‘brand’ had no future, was Taib opinion.

And in Sarawak what Taib says is normally followed to the letter.

SUPP is a liability for new Chief Minister Adenan Satem going into the next state election which is speculated to be anytime between June 2015 and April 2016. In the last state elections the party lost 13 of the 19 seasts it contested to DAP.

Taib’s stand on the party will relieve Adenan of having to decide on SUPP.

Adenan, after he was named CM designate, had said that his priority when he assumed office was to find a solution to SUPP’s and Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party’s (SPDP) problems.

But while SPDP had immediately heeded his concern and put out reconciliation calls to its sacked five elected representatives,  SUPP seems to be going nowhere.

Both party president and ex-federal minister Peter Chin and former deputy secretary-general and current senior state minister Wong Soon Koh are still at loggerheads.

Taib has in the past offered Chin, who is allegedly close to Prime Minister Najib Razak, only cursory attention which riled his followers. Wong and his five elected representatives are Taib loyalist.

But Taib knows best as far as SUPP, who is facing deregistration, is concerned.

SUPP and the Chinese were Taib’s buffer during the 1980s Ming Court crisis. They saved his political hide. They stayed loyal to him and he was benovolent to them.

But times have changed and the Taib era is over.

Adenan has brains, experience

A PBB source when contacted said Taib’s parting advise relieved Adenan of having to make a decision on SUPP.

“SUPP is a liability to us (PBB).  They were loyal. Taib likes loyalty. But now we have a new boss (Adenan).”

Adenan, who stepped into office today, is set to pave the way for a new political era.

Already there are questions over how he will deal with the internal strive in Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) following his unconventional ascend and the everlooming threat of Umno’s entry into Sarawak.

Will he rule like Taib and keep  a tight reign on PBB and the coalition?

How is he going to pacify influential Abang Johari Tun Openg ‘s supporters and the Dayaks who are upset that longtime DCM Alfred Jabu was sidelined? How too will he tackle the factions under leaders Awang Tengah Ali Hassan and Awang Asfia Nassar?

Can he fit into Taib’s big shoes?

Former PBB vice-president Salleh Jafaruddin seems to think he can.

“He’s a trained lawyer and his  political approach is guided by legal ethics, like how in court you fight your opponent and outside you are friends. This is his approach.

“He has the brains and experience. The next three months in leadership will be very crucial and important to him,” he said.

  1. How admirable of him today such a gracious words to SUPP? SUPP is cooked in their own soup of confusion and chaos with misguided direction. It is of their own doing in the course of perpetuating their own personal interests instead of the party. SUPP was founded by noble past Chinese leaders with noble purpose to protect Chinese interest in socio-economic and politic. It is damn so easy for the later greedy leaders to perpetuate their own interests at the expense of destroying the party for which they couldn’t care less. Ask Chinese community and the remaining supporters of the party whether the party is relevant today? It is utterly disgrace for the Chinese community known for diligent hardwork and enterprising spirits that their aspiration for equal opportunity in the affairs of the governance been destroyed by the greeds of their politicians.

  2. Abang Johari , Awang Tengah and Alfred Jabu can take over a new political party to effectively bury PBB with Taib Mahmud . If they do not their grassroot supporters will .
