PKR wants the Federal Government to confirm whether allegations in the US Department of Justice (DoJ) lawsuit related to 1MDB are true. “If so, how did this chain of events (in the lawsuit) come about,” stressed PKR Youth Chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad in a statement.
The people deserve full and unequivocal disclosure from the Federal Government, he said. “All the facts on the case should be laid out.”
He pointed out the suit named specific individuals who have the right to defend themselves. “There’s no implication, as far as one can tell, against the Malaysian government.”
The best way would be to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, he added. “However, Umno Youth Chief Khairy Jamaluddin wishes to defend the Prime Minister, even if he’s called a ‘macai’ by doing so.”
He urged the government to identify and/or reveal, for starters, the “Malaysian Official 1” (MO1) mentioned in the lawsuit. “He has been variously described in the lawsuit.”
Nik Nazmi was referring to the lawsuit describing MO1 as a senior government official, a person of authority in 1MDB, a relative of Riza Aziz — who was named in the suit — and allegedly the recipient of “an exorbitant amount of money through 1MDB dealings”.
The DoJ, as an agency of a sovereign government, was within its rights to take the civil forfeiture and recovery action, said the PKR Youth Chief. “The DoJ wants to protect the US’ interests based on the facts in the suit.”
All the DoJ has done was to present the facts with detailed evidence, said Nik Nazmi. “If Putrajaya believes it has been unfairly treated, all the government needs to do is to rebut the facts.”
