Forget about tales of foreign powers seeking to destroy Malaysia – our ruin will come from within, said a Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) lawmaker.
Kuala Terengganu MP Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad said those whom the public trust will be the country’s downfall, not invaders from beyond the borders.
“Actually, at the moment there are no foreign powers who are interested or need to attack us because we are doing a good job of destroying ourselves.
“Malaysia’s destruction – if it happens – will not be because of foreign powers,” said Raja Kamarul Bahrin in a statement.
“Malaysia will be destroyed by those selected and entrusted by the rakyat to administer the nation, and the religious leaders who chose to keep silent (about wrongdoings) even though they have knowledge and influence.”
He was commenting on Malacca Chief Minister Idris Haron’s claim that the US is coming to ‘kill the Malays’ just as it had with the Iraqis – a statement which Raja Kamarul Bahrin said had as much veracity as local comedy skit Raja Lawak Mega.
Idris had also claimed that the US Department of Justice’s (DOJ) court filings related to 1MDB is part of a political ploy to unseat the Malays.
He said the lawsuits, which were filed to seize assets purportedly purchased with funds siphoned from 1MDB, had come out of nowhere.
But Raja Kamarul Bahrin said allegations that the US is seeking to facilitate the overthrow of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak did not make sense.
This is because the prime minister is close to US president Barack Obama, whose administration needs the support of Asean nations against China’s looming shadow over Asia, he said.
Raja Kamarul Bahrin added that the Obama administration favours Najib because of his pliancy to the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement trade pact.
He said that to the US, Najib is like ex-British prime minister Tony Blair, who was then favored for his close support of US policies.
He added that Najib was nowhere as big a threat as former Iraq president Saddam Hussein.
“Saddam Hussein had acted aggressively by attacking Quwait for its oil.
“Najib only siezed the Bertam 307 oil well from neighbouring state Terengganu, in order to give it to his own state, Pahang,” said Raja Kamarul Bahrin.
The DOJ filings have become fodder for both sides of the political divide as government supporters deny Najib is involved in the alleged theft of monies from 1MDB.
Critics continue to call for the 1MDB case to be reopened and for Najib himself to be questioned in local investigations.
