Wan Azizah: Opposition must be ready for snap polls

Filed under: Politics — Hornbill Unleashed @ 9:01 PM

wan-azizah_undi_600PKR President Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said the Opposition is supposed to be ready whether or not Barisan Nasional (BN) holds the 14th General Election (GE14) early.

She was commenting on former Deputy Prime Minister Musa Hitam’s prediction that the BN would hold snap polls soon.

Malaysiakini reported Musa as saying yesterday that BN might hold the elections before former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s new party Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) gets a firm foothold.

Speaking at the PKR headquarters, in conjunction with the launch of their Reformasi Moon Cakes here today, Wan Azizah said the challenge was to be ready despite an uneven playing field.

“We are supposed to be ready any time. It’s already been a few years since the last general election. So this is something that we have to expect.

“The prime minister has already received so much negative press and we are going to the rakyat who are the stakeholders in any general election.”

She added that as long as the Opposition was able to cooperate, then there shouldn’t be an issue even though BN has formed the Federal Government since Merdeka.

“If we want to see change, then we need to work together.

“In 2013, Pakatan Rakyat won the popular vote through cooperation. So we welcome cooperation from former Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and pray that Tun Mahathir Mohamad has a speedy recovery.”

Dr Mahathir was admitted to hospital earlier this week with a chest infection.

On the dual status of different races in Bersatu, Wan Azizah said it was the party’s prerogative but PKR has always pushed for equal status for everyone.

“Anwar Ibrahim (de facto Opposition leader) has always said that Malaysians should be treated equally in the sight of the law, regardless of race.”

She also denied that too many parties would stifle the progress of the Opposition through split votes, pointing out that Barisan Nasional had 14 parties within the coalition.
