Fake prophets are a dime a dozen in many staunchly religious societies. These charlatans try to push off their personal prophecies as words from the Almighty. However, some of these self-proclaimed prophets have followers, some of them in sizeable numbers.
They are very persuasive and they easily deceive those who are not well-informed and are lacking in spiritual discernment. Sadly in most cases, they have great control over their followers, who readily part with their hard-earned money. Some followers surrender more than cash to these cheats.
Anyone who dares to challenge the validity of any religion would be courting trouble not just with the authorities but society on a whole. Faith requires total and unwavering devotion. The fear of eternal retributions is strong enough to ensure total obedience.
Then there are countless cults throughout the world led by fake prophets. Our police announced that they have arrested a man who claimed to be Jesus Christ and threatened to kill the Prime Minister and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
The 43-year-old man from Kedah was stopped by police along Jalan Tun Razak around 4.30pm on Thursday when they saw him driving a car with the licence plate “WWE3621 KERAJAAN EMPAYAR LANGKASUKA NUSANTARA TUANKU RAJA MERONGMAHAWANGSA II SULTAN KEDAH ASAL IMAM ALMAHDI”.
According to news report, the man, who was in the car with his wife and daughter, scolded the policemen for stopping him and not knowing who he was.
He challenged the police and threatened to kill the IGP and the Prime Minister for arresting him. “He then claimed that he was Jesus Christ and said he would kill the Malay Rulers and take over Putrajaya,” the newspaper quoted a source as saying.
The man was issued three summonses for traffic offences and then referred to the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Department (Jawi) for further action.
We are dealing with one questionable person here. There are a greater number of loony characters, misguided fanatics and sane fraudsters who get their ways with the gullible and the unsuspecting.
The bible belt of the United States is home to many manipulative fraudsters, fear mongers and brain washers. There are countless documented cases of people needing to stage intervention and resort to kidnapping to save their family members from these cults.
Posing greater and graver danger to the world is the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) that seeks to forge a worldwide brotherhood of piety, and above all, total subservience to the Almighty.
Without the foresight or the economic knowledge to sustain already thriving communities, ISIS has moved into many areas and dismantled the structure of societies which they deemed inappropriate. In its place, they imposed absolute rule by firearms where murder, rape and forced sex are made permissible.
Malaysian Abdul Manaf Kasmuri, who pledged his allegiance to al-Qaeda, has shared his account of how religion has been misused by terror groups.
