In stating this, Assistant Minister for Public Utilities (Electricity and Telecommunications) Minister Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi emphasised that it was extremely important to clear the confusion that has been embedded among the people.

“In Sarawak, our history is different and unique than that of Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah. As such, it is important that we understand the three important dates that Sarawak celebrates and pass on the knowledge to our younger generation,” he said.

Dr Abdul Rahman said this when addressing the National Day celebration at the waterfront of Kampung BGS (Boyan, Gersik and Sourabaya) in Kampung Sourabaya Ulu here yesterday organised by PBB Pantai Damai.

Elaborating, he said other than Aug 31, 1957, the two other significant dates observed in Sarawak were July 22, 1963 (Sarawak Day) and Sept 16, 1963 (Malaysia Day).

“July 22 has been gazetted as a public holiday this year as Sarawak recognises that it was the day this state achieved freedom from British colonisation,” he said.

“Sept 16, which is Malaysia Day, marks how the Federation of Malaysia involving Malaya, North Borneo (now Sabah), Sarawak and Singapore was formed,” he added.

However, Dr Abdul Rahman pointed out that Aug 31 a National Day also bears much importance to Sarawakians to continue celebrating the pride of

Malaysia and preserve the unity, harmony and peace enjoyed by the nation.

Meanwhile, over 100 pupils from three schools; namely SK Gersik, SK Pulo and SK Matu Baru joined the National Day celebration.

Dr Abdul Rahman, in his concluding remarks, reminded the pupils to focus on their studies in order to obtain excellent academic results.

The celebration witnessed a poem recital by Mohd Shafik Sulaiman and handing-over and flying of the Jalur Gemilang.

  1. Tell that to that Yang Bodoh from Asajaya. He is not fit to hold any assistant minister post.
