Rafizi to commit to army veterans’ cause ahead of possible jailing

PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli said the welfare of army veterans will be a priority for him ahead of his possible jailing on charges under the Official Secrets Act (OSA).

Rafizi was ordered by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court yesterday to enter his defence for allegedly leaking classified documents related to the Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (LTAT).

“As I am aware that I may only have a few more months before being sentenced to jail, I had announced that the welfare of army veterans will be my main agenda.

“I will also be visiting every major army camp across Malaysia and accept invitations from army veterans who invite me for dialogue,” he said in a statement today.

He said the first of such dialogues will take place in Setiawangsa near the main army camp in Klang Valley on Sept 7 followed by similar events in Lumut, Butterworth, Kuantan, Telok Kemang and other locations.

Rafizi, who is also PKR vice-president, had on several occasions raised the issue of late payment by LTAT to army veterans.

The Pandan MP added that he has continued to receive such complaints to date despite no forthcoming explanation from Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein.

Rafizi is facing two charges under the OSA for disclosing the classified documents at the Parliament lobby on March 24.

The charge under Section 8(1)(c)(iii) of the Act provides a jail term of up to seven years, if he is found guilty.

Rafizi was also charged under Section 8(1)(c)(iv) of the same Act, which provides a maximum seven-year jail term upon conviction.
