MCMC lauds setting up of special cyber court

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) lauds the setting up of the special court for cyber crimes, saying it is timely.

The cyber court began operating a few days ago at the court complex in Jalan Duta, Kuala Lumpur.

“Hopefully, cyber cases that had been investigated by MCMC under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, particularly social media misuse would be dealt with by the court expeditiously,” it said.

The special cyber court is coordinated by Sessions Court judges, well versed and with experience in handling cyber crimes such as hacking, online fraud, botnet, information theft, spying, cyber gambling, document falsification and pornography.

Meanwhile, MCMC chairperson Halim Shafie will be conferred an honorary doctorate of knowledge science by the Malaysian Multimedia University (MMU) at its 17th convocation ceremony tomorrow.

The MMU corporate communications unit, in a statement today, said the conferment of the honorary doctorate was a recognition for Halim’s contribution in the expansion of the knowledge science sector, specifically in the development of information technology, communications and multimedia, which had generated the country’s socio-economic development.

Halim will receive the honorary doctorate from MMU chancellor Zaki Azmi at the first session of the three-day convocation ceremony, the statement said.

A total of 3,726 MMU graduates will receive their scrolls during the ceremony, 778 of whom to receive their diploma, bachelor’s degree (2,784), master’s degree (132), and doctorate degree (32).

Some 700 graduates of Multimedia College, an MMU subsidiary, will also receive their diploma.
