Malaysian police have no jurisdiction over the US Justice Department civil suits about 1MDB-related funds, according to Umno supreme council member Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
“The DoJ issue is about money laundering that happened in America. It’s not a criminal case. It’s a civil case,” he was quoted as saying.
He said the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Khalid Abu Bakar, did not need to take action. “It’s way out of his jurisdiction. It’s in American courts. It’s not related to the Malaysian police,” he told reporters today after attending Parit Umno’s divisional assembly.
Ismail reiterated that the Prime Minister had stated publicly that the government would not protect anyone or interfere in the US investigations.
“I think Kit Siang is confused. He can’t differentiate between a civil and a criminal case. What’s important is the jurisdiction. It’s America’s jurisdiction. How can the IGP go there and investigate it,” he said, according to Star Online.
“We focus on the four individuals who have been named. The Prime Minister himself has said that they should be responsible.”
