UMNO’s struggle now is more focused on preserving political and economic stability besides national security for the benefit of the future generation, said Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Johari Abdul Ghani.
He said the struggle this time differed from that faced by the previous generation which was to free the nation from the colonialists, and they were prepared to sacrifice without considering any reward.
He said that due to the deep sense of tolerance held by every community regardless of religion, race and political ideology, the British imperialists had no grounds to reject the country’s independence which had now entered its 59th anniversary.
“We need to preserve the independence so that Malaysia does not receive the same fate as those nations which failed to preserve their political and economic stability as well as national security,” he said when opening the Segamat Umno divisional delegates’ conference at the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Kenangan, Batu Anam near here today.
Also present at the event were Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S Subramaniam, who is also the Segamat Member of Parliament, and Segamat Umno division head Zahari Sarip.
Johari said the formula adopted by the Umno leaders all this while to preserve stability of the three elements was to uphold solidarity among the races in the country.
He said Umno was a large party thus its members too must have a big heart especially when dealing with the tolerance existing in the Barisan Nasional with regard to the component parties.
“When younger members (of the component party) make mistakes, we have to excuse and assist them. It is because of this formula that Umno must look after the younger siblings in the BN so that political and economic stability as well as security can continue to be preserved in the country,” he said.
In addition, Johari reminded Umno members not to take matters concerning national security for granted.
“The deviationist Daesh ideology has begun to penetrate the activities of the Malays and this matter cannot be taken lightly. Otherwise, we will suffer the same fate as those suffered by the people in Syria, Egypt and other countries that were experiencing the same developments,” he added.
