Ti: Malays no longer fall for scare tactics

Filed under: Politics — Hornbill Unleashed @ 9:01 PM

Ti-Lian-KerUmno must refrain from employing scare tactics to win the Malay votes – currently divided among several Malay-Muslim based parties – as such methods will only backfire.

MCA spokesperson Ti Lian Ker added that many Malays no longer fell for such political stunts – which included claims that the rights of the Malays or Islam were threatened – with some openly disagreeing with such tactics.

The insecurity complex of the Malays, the former Pahang assemblyman noted, could no longer be exploited to Umno’s benefit.
Instead, Ti warned, such scare tactics would only alienate non-Malay voters.

“Instead of producing the desired result of uniting the Malays, these issues had proven to be counter-productive and had inadvertently united the Christians , the Indians, the Chinese, among others, into taking an ‘anti-Umno’ stance,” he said in a statement, adding that such tactics would also lead to non-Malays blaming Umno for its failure to tolerate and defend the freedom of the minorities.

Ti’s warning comes in the wake of the brief meeting between former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his protege-turned-nemeis Anwar Ibrahim at the courts earlier this week.

Ti went on to argue that if Mahathir could meet Anwar, then it was time for Umno to review and change its political game plan.

“Gone are the days where Umno can step or pick on the minorities to display their strength, and as a clarion call for Malays or Muslims to unite or stay together against the others,” he said.

Ti’s latest salvo against “strategies of old”, which he says Umno must stop practicing, comes a week after the MCA Religious Harmony Bureau chairman offered Umno several tips to win the hearts of non-Malay voters.

This included preventing Umno members from making abrasive statements or spewing fiery rhetoric.
