Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says report of early general election next March pure speculation. — File pic A news report claiming that the general election could be held as early as next March was based on speculation, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Contesting the report by the Bloomberg news service, Ahmad Zahid said the conclusion was reached using the predictions of unnamed Umno leaders polled by the media outlet.

“That is a prediction based on structured sampling which they did. But the reality is that we must keep our feet firmly planted on the ground and while the leaders in the government, BN and Umno don’t deny that the survey was done academically, but the reality is different,” he said during a press conference after officiating the Makkal Sakti annual general meeting at the Menara Berkembar Bank Rakyat today.

The 13th general election was held on May 5, 2013. The next general election must be held no later than August 2018.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said in October 2015 that the next general election will be held in 2018.
