US lawyer Kimberley Motley said today she will represent Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to challenge his current conviction for sodomising a former aide.
The Afghanistan-based international lawyer said she was appointed by Anwar last week to represent him in all future cases, and that she would do so free of charge.
“Anwar is a political prisoner, he is a prisoner of conscience. I am very honoured representing him internationally. He appointed me last week Wednesday
“I’ve always known of Anwar’s case for a number of years now. I’ve talked with his lawyers and I’ve met his daughter,” Motley told reporters when met outside the Home Ministry today.
She was there to file a complaint with the ministry under Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as she was not allowed to meet her client at the Sungai Buloh Prison.
She was not allowed to meet any officials despite being accompanied by a local lawyer.
Motley, who specialises in human rights litigation, said that she took on the case as she felt a strong injustice towards Anwar.
“I feel happy to be representing Anwar. Frankly, it is one of the most horrendous travesties of justice in the 21st century.
“After really understanding what was happening with the case and knowing that human rights and international litigation is my speciality, it encouraged me to take the case,” She explained.
The former beauty queen who has taken on high profile human rights cases in the past, is adamant that she will somehow be able to meet Anwar and represent him in future cases.
Motley added that she believes in her client’s innocence and that his current conviction was a political ploy by those not wanting him to be in power.
“Anwar didn’t do it. Evidence has overwhelmingly shown Anwar is innocent of sodomy.
“Anwar statements and his version, the truth has always been consistent. That’s the thing about truth, it always stays and lies change,” she said.
