DAP MP Ramkarpal Singh has called for an immediate investigation into the threat made by Ali Tinju against Bersih Chairman Maria Chin Abdullah.
“The remarks of Ali Tinju in a report by FMT titled, ‘Watch your back, Ali Tinju warns Maria Chin’, are indeed disturbing,” the Bukit Gelugor MP told FMT.
“If the said statements as reported in the said article are true, there can be no doubt that offences of criminal intimidation under Section 506 of the Penal Code have been committed.”
FMT earlier reported Ali, whose real name is Mohd Ali Baharom, warning Chin to “watch her back” or she may no longer “walk on this earth”.
His remarks came following Chin’s confirmation that the fifth instalment of the Bersih rally was scheduled to take place on Nov 19.
“Don’t challenge us or we will make it so that her (Chin) legs point upwards and her head points downward to the ground (kaki dia ke atas, kepala dia ke bawah jalan),” said Ali.
Chin, however, has decided not to lodge a police report for the moment. She told FMT that Bersih would focus instead on the rally which, among others, would demand for institutional reforms as well as clean and fair elections.
Ramkarpal, on the other hand, believed that it did not matter if Chin chose not to bring the case to the police’s attention, as Ali’s public statement alone was enough to call for an investigation.
“It matters not if Chin does not lodge a police report as the police have ample powers to initiate investigations even if she does not.”
“I call on the Inspector-General of Police (Khalid Abu Bakar) to commence investigations into the alleged remarks of Ali Tinju, without fear or favour as the matter is serious and is certainly in the public interest,” Ramkarpal said.
