One Putrajaya vote worth 10 in Damansara

The Election Commission was challenged today to reveal whether it still had a “secret agenda” to keep Umno in power.

DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang said that this agenda had been revealed in 2013 by the previous Election Commission chairman Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman.

After managing six of Malaysia’s 13 general elections, and three of four constituency redelineations, Abdul Rashid had made the “shocking confession” that previous redelineations were gerrymandered “to ensure that the Malays, actually meaning Umno, remain in power.

He said the current chairman, Mohd Hashim Abdullah, should explain whether boundary changes that have been proposed to more than 120 constituencies would be more undemocratic than previous redelineations in violating the principle of “one man, one vote, one value”.

Lim said one vote in Putrajaya (electorate: 15,627) was equivalent to 10 votes in the renamed seat of Damansara in Selangor (150,439 voters).

He asked the Election Commission to explain the greater disparity in the number of electors among the constituencies.

The disparity between the largest and smallest electorates had been widened, he said.

In Selangor, Kapar had 144,159 voters (2013) while Petaling Jaya Utara (now Damansara) would have 150,439 voters (2016). He compared the number to the 37,318 voters (2013) and 37,126 (2016) in Sabak Bernam,

He also gave comparative figures for Gelang Patah and Labis in Johor.
