Malays can only progress if they break free from the illusion that they need Umno to protect them, say Opposition members.
Khalid Samad, communications director of Opposition party Amanah, said Umno propaganda had been successful in convincing the majority of Malays to believe that they were dependent on the ruling party.
He said, however, that the fact many Malays outside the country were successful was proof that Umno’s assertion was untrue.
“They’ve made you (Malays) believe that you cannot survive on your own but just look at how outside the country there are so many successful Malays,” he said at a forum here on the future of the Malay community. “It’s only here where this narration that you will not be able to live without Umno’s help and protection, exists.”
PKR information chief Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh, agreeing with Khalid, said that the only way Malays would be able to prosper in Malaysia was through changing their mindset.
“We need to find a way to spread the word that even if we are dependent on the government, it should not be to the point where they are allowed to oppress us,” he said.
“This belief that the government acts as our protectors has been embedded (in the minds of the Malays) for so long now. We need to stop thinking of the government as providers and start thinking of them as administrators.”
When asked about the economic state of the Malays, Khalid said that policies would not succeed, no matter how good, as long as those in charge were untrustworthy and dishonest.
“That is why choosing the right leader is so essential, because it is he who should ensure that these beautifully crafted economic policies are carried out as they are supposed to.”
Also present at the forum were Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia member Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and PAS information chief Nasrudin Tantawi.
