adnan-hanipah-mat-razifThe menteris besar of Pahang, Terengganu, Kedah and Negeri Sembilan may be replaced as Barisan Nasional (BN) prepares for the next general election, according to a news report.

The speculation about the changes come in the wake of Adnan Yaakob of Pahang announcing his wish to retire, health concerns over Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah of Kedah and Mohamad Hasan of Negeri Sembilan, and a power struggle in Terengganu between Ahmad Said and his successor Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman.

BN chairman and Umno president Najib Razak needed “new captains to spearhead the machinery in these states”, according to unnamed sources quoted by the Sunday Star newspaper.

Besides health issues, there was a concern about in-fighting among Umno factions in Negeri Sembilan.

Another power struggle, between the two Ahmads in Terengganu, had left the state “in danger of falling to PAS” according to the report.

The report said the changes may be necessary as the next general election might be a “do or die” effort for Najib and the BN.

Najib may present his plans to Umno delegates at the party’s assembly later this year.
