Kit Siang moots snap polls in Selangor

kit-siang-pakatan-selangor-1The current redelineation exercise violates the democratic principle of “one man, one vote, one value”, charged DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang in a statement. “It goes against the spirit of the Federal Constitution.”

The multiple objectives of the exercise, he alleged, includes the following:

Firstly, for Umno to regain power in Selangor.

Secondly, for it to win back the two-thirds majority in Parliament.

Thirdly, to eliminate individual personalities in the 14th General Election. These include former Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, former Perak Mentri Besar Nizar Jamaluddin and PKR Vice-President Nurul Izzah Anwar.

Lim was taking the line that Pakatan Harapan (PH) would have to consider snap polls in Selangor.

“The Election Commission’s (EC) constituency redelineation proposals have mangled the map of Selangor,” warned Lim who is Gelang Patah MP and DAP Parliamentary Leader. “It has butchered the seats.”

He pointed out the Barisan Nasional (BN) only won 12 state seats through Umno in the 2013 General Elections.

However, given the current EC exercise, it’s hoping to recapture Selangor. “The EC has embarked on the most unashamed, blatant and flagrant violations in redelineations in Selangor,” added Lim. “This is for both state and parliamentary seats.”

He noted Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Razali Ismail, has denied the redelineation exercise was in favour of Umno and BN. “He claimed the allegation was aimed at tarnishing Umno’s image,” added Lim. “He only needs to look at the proposed redelineation in Selangor.”

Razali and other Umno leaders know the truth, said Lim. “They are putting on a great show on redelineations.”

The current fifth constituency redelineation was making history, reiterated Lim. “It makes the voter disparity in electoral constituencies greater than before.”

He went on to say the exercise was clearly not intended by the Constitution.

Only a person with a special brief could have so mangled and butchered the map of Selangor, said Lim. “It will produce state seats which make no sense whatsoever.”

Again, he said, the sole objective was to return Umno/BN to power in Selangor. “The exercise violates the Constitution on a principle i.e. every constituency redelineation exercise should close the voter disparity.”

The “one man, one vote, one value” principle was enshrined in the Constitution, he stressed.
