‘Stupid to have elections later’ – S’gor DAP wants snap polls

Filed under: Politics — Hornbill Unleashed @ 9:01 PM

Selangor DAP has called for state elections to be held ahead of the Election Commission’s completion of its ongoing redelineation exercise.

Selangor DAP chief Tony Pua said the decision was made during its emergency meeting held yesterday.

“If you ask anybody on the street, they would also say the same thing.

“You would be stupid to say we should only have an election after the redelineation is completed,” Pua told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

The decision, he said, was made based on Selangor DAP’s analysis of projected outcomes after the redelineation exercise is completed.

“We don’t think we can win, but chances of winning will definitely be better than after redelineation,” he said.

Pua said Selangor DAP would propose the matter to the Pakatan Harapan top leadership to make the final decision.

Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali (photo) on Monday rejected the proposal, saying that the government would serve the mandate given by the people.

The Selangor state executive council is expected to discuss its next course of action on the redelineation proposal today.

Asked to comment on the stand taken by Azmin, Pua said: “The MB has also said he will refer the matter to Pakatan Harapan’s top leaders.”

The Petaling Jaya Utara MP, whose seat is proposed to be renamed as Damansara, also said that the question of betraying the people’s mandate does not arise in calling for a snap state election.

“I just want to point out that having an election before the redelineation is completed is not having an election tomorrow or next month.

“The redelineation exercise will take around eight months, perhaps, or even a year, and by then we would be nearly completing our full term, anyway,” Pua said.

Subject to endorsement of the sultan

He added that Selangor’s constitution also states that the decision to call for a snap election would be subjected to the endorsement and approval by the sultan.

“Of course, that’s something for Tuanku to decide, using his discretion. But from a political perspective, we have to take position on whether we want or don’t want an election that we determine the date for, rather than depending on (Prime Minister) Najib (Abdul Razak),” he said.

Pua also reaffirmed that there would be no discussions between DAP and its former Pakatan Rakyat ally, PAS, on seat negotiations to ensure a straight fight against the BN.

“There will be no discussion between DAP and PAS for seats,” Pua said when asked on the matter.

On negotiations with the newly formed Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, Pua said it is a matter that has to be resolved by Harapan, regardless of whether it would go ahead with the call for a snap election in Selangor.

DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang said on Monday that Harapan would have to consider the option of a snap election in Selangor, since the EC’s redelineation exercise is meant to return Umno to power in the state.
