Mukhriz Mahathir admits that many people in Kedah have accepted Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) out of sympathy over his removal as the Kedah mentri besar earlier this year.
As a result, he believes that PPBM must first prove it is capable of forming a government that protects the interest of the people.
“I cannot bank on sympathy alone to get me through the 14th General Election,” Mukhriz was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.
In February, Mukhriz resigned as the Kedah MB, following a leadership crisis that plagued the state for two weeks.
Stating he no longer commanded the support of the majority of assemblymen, the former deputy minister also cited his criticisms of 1MDB as among the factors why he was pressured to step down.
The Ayer Hitam assemblyman then trained his guns on his successor, Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah claiming the latter has not done anything for the state.
“I was asked to step down on the grounds that I failed to administer the state effectively, but I wonder if the current administration is any better?” the Bahasa Malaysia daily quoted him as saying.
Mukhriz also spoke of the predicament the country is facing with leaders who were afraid of criticising the top leadership for fear of repercussion.
“Leaders must take the risk and only then will the people not fear change,” he said when asked as to why more people were only voicing out against the leaders after Mahathir began criticising Prime Minister Najib Razak.
