Gerakan Youth slams Jamal Yunos over Bersih-IS claim

Tan Keng LiangBersih 2.0 has found an unlikely ally in Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang.

Despite being among the critics of the electoral reform group, Tan leapt to its defense following Jamal Yunos’ accusation that Bersih 2.0 was “infiltrated” by Islamic State (IS) terrorists.

At a press conference yesterday, the Umno Sungai Besar division chief – who is the face of the Red Shirts movement – also claimed Bersih 2.0 would surround Putrajaya and airports on Nov 19.

Jamal claimed he had received the information from “reliable sources”.

In a statement, Tan admitted that Gerakan is extremely perplexed over the serious allegations, despite the party disagreeing as to how Bersih 2.0 intends to conduct their demonstration.

“The Red Shirts or anyone else should not make serious ‘terrorists’ allegations against Bersih 2.0 unless there is concrete evidence to substantiate it,” Tan said.

Tan went on to state that Jamal’s claim would worsen the tourism industry, arguing that as it is, the street demonstration Bersih 2.0 will hold on Nov 19 would have a “serious impact” on the industry.

He then urged the Red Shirts to stop any baseless “terrorist” allegations against Bersih 2.0.

“If the Red Shirts have any concrete evidence on their allegations, then it should be handed over to the police for investigation without publicising unproven allegations.”

Bersih 2.0 will hold its fifth rally on Nov 19 which is calling for institutional reforms and demanding Prime Minister Najib Razak’s resignation.
