The Bersih 5 street rally planned for Nov. 19 is unnecessary, says former Selangor menteri besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.
“I think that we don’t need street protests now,” he said today. “The people are facing issues such as poverty and the economic gap between the rich and poor. It would be better for Bersih to spend their energy and expertise to help combat poverty in the poorer villages.”
The Bersih 5 rally is being held to demand institutional reforms and to press for the resignation of Prime Minister Najib Razak.
Khalid, who is MP for Bandar Tun Razak, said that with a general election no more than two and a half years away, there was no need to focus on such matters, “but to show your interest in championing the people and setting an example on how to help the people”.
