With the Rulers’ Conference due to be held on Tuesday, former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad has written to the heads of all states to inform them about his Citizens’ Declaration petition for the removal of prime minister Najib Razaik.
He said he had sent the letter on Oct 4, following up on his audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, at Istana Anak Bukit, Alor Setar, last month.
“As of now I have yet to receive a reaction from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong about the meeting,” he said in an interview with Sinar Harian.
“But because the Rulers’ Conference is set to convene on Oct 11, I believe it is good to send out a letter to all the Rulers (and Yang Dipertua Negeri) to inform them about our appeal for the Rulers’ Conference to take action on the contents of the Citizens’ Declaration.
Dr Mahathir who was prime minister for 22 years, disputed a view that the Rulers did not have the power to dismiss the prime minister. “This is false and that is why we are trying to get the Rulers’ Conference to act because they have the power (to do so),” he said.
A week after Dr Mahathir’s audience, the prime minister, Najib Razak, said he had been informed at his weekly audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong that the King did not want to get involved in the matter as the Citizens’ Declaration did not abide by the Constitution.
Dr Mahathir has admitted that he had failed to convince Tuanku Abdul Halim. “Unfortunately, we could not get a positive answer,” he said about his hour-long audience.
