Penang Umno Youth will hold a second “Ride Against Corruption” rally in a continued bid to call for Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to resign and to stop the Bersih 5 rally.
Penang Umno Youth chief Rafizal Abdul Rahim said the rally, dubbed as “Himpunan Bangkit Pulau Pinang 2016 Ride Against Corruption 2.0 “, is to pressure Lim to either step down from his post or take leave pending his corruption cases in court.
“We also want the Bersih 5 rally to be cancelled as it will adversely affect the people,” he said in a press conference at Menara Umno here today.
Penang Umno Youth held its first Ride Against Corruption last week, on October 1, where Rafizal claimed more than 3,000 participants, in red shirts, rode through the streets to demonstrate against Lim and Bersih 5.
“It has been more than nine days since we held that demonstration to demand for Lim to step down and for Bersih 5 to be cancelled and yet we saw no signs of our demands being met so we will now organise a second event,” he said.
He claimed this time around, they will be gathering up to 10,000 supporters to take part in the Ride Against Corruption 2.0 in order to get their points across to the Pakatan Hardpan-led state government and Bersih.
“It will be a peaceful demonstration and as long as they ignore or refuse to respond to our demands, we will continue to hold such demonstrations,” he said.
However, Rafizal did not divulge the date and location of the planned demonstration as it was “still in discussions”.
“We will announce the date and location after we hold a meeting to decide on it,” he said, adding that they will also be applying for permit from the police this time around.
As for allegations that Umno are behaving like “samseng” (gangsters) after they clashed with Bersih supporters in Teluk Intan recently, he said it would not have happened if there were no provocations.
“Bersih chairman Maria Chin Abdullah must remember that previously, it was Bersih supporters who had behaved aggressively towards the police controlling their rally so they are the ones who are more samseng than us. At least, we listened to police instructions,” he said.
Earlier today, at the launch of the Bersih 5 gallery at City Hall here, Maria had labelled Umno leaders as “samseng” while alleging they had attacked Bersih supporters at Teluk Intan.
