A-Journey-to-Merdeka-Sarawak-in-MalaysiaFour papers will be presented this Sunday at a seminar on Sarawak history themed, “A Journey to Merdeka: Sarawak in Malaysia”, in the state capital.

One of the papers will be on events leading to Malaysia’s formation.

The others are “Issues and Challenges after Sarawak’s Independence”, “Sarawak Independence in Malaysia: A legal Observation, and “Sarawak Independence” from a local perspective.

The seminar is jointly organised by the Sarawak Government and the Historical Society of Malaysia, Sarawak branch.

Seminar organising chairman Dr Roji Saibi said in a statement, carried by the Borneo Post, that the focus would be on how Sarawak achieved independence.

“The working papers will cover historical happenings and events that led to Sarawak’s independence,” he said. “The seminar will help build a database for comprehensive knowledge on Sarawak history.”

This would benefit present and future generations, he said.

Earlier, he paid a courtesy call on Chief Minister Adenan Satem at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here to brief him on the seminar.

The 300 participants expected at the seminar will include people from institutions of higher learning, colleges, schools, youth leaders, community leaders, and history enthusiasts.

The Historical Society of Malaysia, Sarawak branch, was formed 35 years ago.
