Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Md Yunos, who leads the anti-Bersih red shirts movement, has apologised in the event his men had indeed manhandled journalists.

He was responding to the incident yesterday where a group of red shirts roughed up members of the media outside Giant supermarket in Kuala Selangor.

“If the incident happened, on behalf of the red shirts, I apologise to the media,” he was quoted saying on mStar Online.

Jamal said he was presently in Dubai and was waiting to transit back to the country.

He added the incident was unintentional.

“I apologise if there was any loss or injury. We’ll take responsibility.

“I am confident that the matter was only a coincidence and not intentional,” he was quoted saying.

Bersih blamed for reds

Jamal added there wouldn’t be a red shirts movement if not for Bersih, the coalition for free and fair elections.

“Our intention is not violence, no matter what happens…

“If there is no yellow (Bersih), there would be no red. So long as there is yellow, so long as there is Bersih, we’ll be around,” he said.

Yesterday, a group of anti-Bersih activists emerged in Kuala Selangor where Bersih activists were campaigning.

They demanded journalists present to delete video recording and photographs of the scene and proceeded to manhandle and hurl abuse at members of the press.

Among those present with the anti-Bersih group were Umno Youth exco member Armand Azha Abu Hanifah and Tanjong Karang Umno Youth deputy chief Shahrizal Shaari.

Bersih is presently holding roadshows every weekend ahead of its Nov 19 rally to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak over the 1MDB scandal, in addition to their electoral reform demands.

Najib had denied wrongdoing or taking public funds for personal gain.
