DAP will challenge Dewan Rakyat Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia’s decision yesterday barring lawmakers from debating the United States Department of Justice’s (DoJ) 1MDB-linked civil forfeiture suits.
Party supremo and Gelang Patah MP Lim Kit Siang said DAP will file the motion to review the ruling after the Hansard for yesterday’s sitting is released.
This will be done in accordance with the parliamentary Standing Order 43.
“We asked the Speaker yesterday when we can debate (the motion). He kept quiet.
“So we will wait for yesterday’s Hansard,” he said in a press conference at the Parliament lobby here today.
Pandikar had said that as the civil suits were still in court, debating it maybe sub judice.
He said a written explanation on his ruling will be issued to those who had submitted questions on the DoJ’s civil suits.
“I did not make the decision in haste. It was made after taking into account the legal implications on the country.
“Whatever decision made in this sitting will also be known by those in other countries due to the advancement of information technology,” Pandikar was reported as saying.
Lim and Gobind Singh Deo (DAP-Puchong), however, said the DoJ suits were not filed in Malaysia and Pandikar’s controversial ruling would set a precedent in similar cases.
