Despite ‘worst threats ever’, Bersih 2.0 will go on with its programmes

Bersih5Bersih 2.0 will not be cowed despite the electoral reform group facing its “worst threats ever”, its chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah said.

In the wake of its supporters being harassed and assaulted during convoys, as well as the death threats issued against several activists, Chin also wonders what did they do to deserve such treatment.

“What is it that they have against Bersih to resort to such low political violence?

“Bersih sees this as an act of intimidation and political violence, not just against me but also Bersih. This violence must stop,” Chin told reporters outside the Federal police heaquarters in Bukit Aman today.

She was there to hand over a memorandum to the Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar calling for immediate investigations to the “acts of violence”.

Earlier today her son’s car was splashed with red paint and chicken blood.

Chin then urged Malaysians not to be afraid despite what has taken place and urged them to take part in the Bersih 5 rally which will be held on November 19.

“This will not sway our opinion from the real issues such as the 1MDB scandal, the corruption and the leadership of Najib (Prime Minister Najib Razak).

Bersih will continue with our planned programmes.

“We will not stop fighting for free and fair elections and a clean government. We must show the government that we are not afraid and we want change. Intimidation and political violence has no place in democracy.”

Lawyer cum activist Ambiga Sreenevasan, who was also present, urged leaders to speak up on such violent acts, pointing out that the IGP and Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi have so far kept mum over the issue.

“We want to know, is such violence accepted in our society?” Ambiga asked.

On Tuesday, Chin received a death threat from an anonymous individual via WhatsApp regarding the upcoming rally.

The threat came in an Islamic State-styled doctored image which depicted a man dressed in black holding a dagger to her neck.

Similar images also included the faces of Bersih 2.0 committee member Mandeep Singh and Human Rights Society Chairperson Ambiga Sreevenasan.

Prior to this, Mohd Ali Baharom, better known as Ali Tinju, had warned Chin to “watch her back” or she may no longer “walk on this earth”, after the announcement of the Bersih 5 rally.
