Adenan takes Sarawak’s rights to state assembly

Filed under: Politics — Hornbill Unleashed @ 9:02 PM

adenan-sarawak-malaysia-agreement-1The Sarawak state goverment will table a motion at the state legislative assembly next month to reclaim Sarawak’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement of 1963.

Chief Minister Adenan Satem said the motion would focus on the need for the federal government to observe Sarawak’s rights as provided in Malaysia’s founding documents: the Malaysia Agreement, the Inter-Govermental Committee Report and the Cobbold Commission Report.

The motion will be tabled by a state minister, he told reporters after opening Parti Rakyat Sarawak’s delegates conference.

The state asembly will sit from Nov 21-30.

Last week, Adenan had staked out Sarawak’s claim to be a founding partner of Malaysia, together with Sabah, Singapore and Malaya. Singapore left the federation in 1965.

He said an amendment to the federal constitution in 1976 had reduced Sarawak to the status of being only one among 14 states.

  2. Though too late, it’s better than NEVER for Sarawak to demand Putrajaya to recognize MA63 and treat Sarawak as an equal partner of Malaya. This is our rights as Sarawakians to speak up gainst an evil and illegal colonizer. Kudos for Adenan. Sabah should join force with Sarawak to do the same thing!!!!
