Bersih’s existence ‘proof’ that elections in Malaysia not fair

bersih-pilihBersih 2.0 today said it would not be fighting for electoral reforms if elections in Malaysia were indeed fair.

The NGO added it rejects and denies a claim by Election Commission (EC) chairman, Mohd Hashim Abdullah, in an opinion piece in Mingguan Malaysia over the weekend, that Malaysia’s elections were fair.

“Ill-gotten gains from 1MDB were used to fund Najib Abdul Razak’s campaign for GE13,” Bersih said in the statement. “Najib admitted that BN spent RM1.5 billion of his RM2.6 billion ‘donation’ on GE13.”

On Monday, Umno Information Chief Annuar Musa said all political funding channelled to Najib was disbursed to Umno divisions accordingly.

“Bersih will not stop questioning the 1MDB scandal until questions are answered.”

Furthermore, it said, the EC’s recent re-delineation exercise disregarded constitutional provisions.

Instead, there’s manipulation of electoral boundaries and malapportionment that sees vastly different ratios of voters to representatives, it said.

Earlier, said the statement, when the people expressed concerns on GE13, Bersih set up the People’s Tribunal.

Supported by 30-strong legal team, it gathered evidence and witness statements from public hearings, said Bersih, adding that it included allegations of manipulation, excess expenditure, bribery, rigging and other electoral irregularities.

The government and EC were also invited to submit their claims, said Bersih. “They refused to engage and instead continued to feign ignorance and deny any wrongdoing.”

The tribunal’s report was presented to Bersih on March 25, 2014.

It concluded that “there were so many breaches of law that we have to conclude that elections were not free and fair”.

Bersih’s Delineation Action and Research Team (DART) has also been formed to challenge any unfair or unconstitutional redelineation proposals by the EC.

The EC has thus far received 836 objections on the proposed redelineation for the Peninsula and Sabah.
