Polls reform group Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah has been arrested today in Sabah for distributing leaflets regarding their fifth mega rally due next month.
According to Bersih 2.0 steering committee member Fadiah Nadwa Fikri, Chin was arrested at 2pm today in Kota Marudu, Sabah while handing out flyers about the Bersih convoy and rally.
“We were at Kota Marudu town town hall handing out leaflets to public.
“The police came to Maria and said what she doing illegal and arrested her,” she told Malay Mail Online when contacted today.
The authorities however did not furnish the activists with a valid warrant and merely claimed that Chin had breached Section 11 of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984, Fadiah added.
Section 11 states that every printed document published in Malaysia must bear the name of its printer and publisher.
Despite that, Fadiah claimed that the electoral watchdog did not deny that the flyers were from them and accepted full responsibility for it despite the alleged heavy-handed arrest of Chin.
“It is by Bersih and we don’t deny fact it’s from us. We are ready to go to court for it but the arrest is a bit too much,” Fadiah said.
At around 4.30 pm, Bersih 2.0 tweeted that Chin has been released on bail.
The group also alleged that they were roughed up by a group of bikers who tore down yellow flags on their cars.
Bersih 2.0 is on a nationwide convoy ahead of their mammoth rally set to take place on November 19.
The electoral watchdog has seen much opposition to the rally especially from Red Shirts and its leader, Sungai Besar Umno chief Datuk Jamal Yunos.
