Don’t waste police resources, Bersih tells opponents

maria-chinMaria Chin Abdullah’s opponents should not waste the limited resources of enforcement agencies, says electoral watchdog Bersih 2.0.

The reform group slammed the arrest yesterday of its chairperson in Langkon, Sabah, while she was distributing leaflets as part of the Bersih 5 convoy through Sabah.

“Although she was released on bail, we view (her arrest) as a form of intimidation towards a social and human rights activist,” Bersih said in a statement today.

“(The arrest) shows that there are certain quarters who may want to thwart or stop Bersih 2.0’s objectives to demand for a clean-up of the elections and our government.

“We urge such individuals or quarters not to waste our enforcement agencies’ limited resources. Our enforcement agencies, especially the PDRM, are meant to maintain the safety and security of the country and serve our society.”

Maria Chin was held and later released on police bail for distributing Bersih flyers in Langkon to promote the Bersih 5 rally planned for November 19.

She was arrested for violation of Section 11 of Printing Presses and Publication Act of 1984.

At the same time, Bersih also thanked the authorities in Sarawak for their cooperation with the Bersih 5 convoy, which left Sri Aman for Balai Ringin yesterday and went on fairly unhindered.

According to Bersih, the next leg of the convoy will start from Balai Ringin and proceed to Serian on November 5, passing through Simunjan and Gedong. Supporters can gather at Balai Ringin at 8am on November 5.

  1. The much criticised and condemned IGP and the Police Force must earn the respect of all Malaysians by conducting their duties professionally and within the Constitution without be seen to be harassing the Opposition and suppressing voices of dissent on behalf of Umno Baru controlled BN government.
